Paris has more genuine palace hotels than any city on earth, which makes the choice harder, not easier. The honest answer is that there's no single best one — Le Bristol Paris is the safest all-round bet, Hôtel de Crillon a Rosewood Hotel and the Ritz Paris sell history and theatre, Cheval Blanc Paris and Mandarin Oriental Lutetia Paris sell something quieter and more modern — and the right pick depends entirely on whether you want to be seen, soothed, or fed.
London has more genuinely great luxury hotels than any city we cover, which is exactly the problem — Claridge's, The Connaught, The Berkeley and The Lanesborough are all excellent and all quite different animals. The short answer: pick your neighborhood and your era first, then let service reputation break the tie, because at this level in London, service is usually what separates the merely good stay from the one you talk about for years.
