Royal Champagne Hotel & Spa
About
Perched on the slopes above Épernay with sweeping views across the Champagne vineyards, Royal Champagne Hotel & Spa is a contemporary retreat rooted in one of France's most storied wine regions. The property occupies a former coaching inn — where Napoleon once stopped on his way to battle — reimagined by Milanese architect Saguez & Partners into a sleek, light-filled destination.
The 47 rooms and suites feature floor-to-ceiling windows that frame the vine-striped landscape, with interiors that balance warmth (oak, leather, soft neutrals) with crisp modern lines. Many have private terraces overlooking the valley.
The spa draws on the antioxidant properties of the grape — vinotherapy treatments are a signature — and includes an indoor pool that seems to float above the vineyards. Dining at Le Royal is refined but unpretentious, with a menu built around seasonal Champagne-region produce and, naturally, an extraordinary wine list.
Founders' Verdict
We stayed here. Twice.
One night. That is all we had, and I want to be upfront about it — a single night is not enough to write the kind of verdict this place probably deserves.
But what a night. You arrive, you see the vineyards falling away below you toward Épernay, and something in your shoulders just lets go. The tranquility here is not the manufactured kind you get at wellness resorts with ambient playlists. It is the real thing — geography, silence, and a building that knows how to stay out of your way.
The spa was genuinely outstanding. Not a box-ticking amenity, a reason to come. I would have happily spent the entire stay there if we had more time.
So this is not a definitive verdict. It is an exquisite first taste — and I mean that literally, given the setting. We will be back, and when we are, this section gets a proper rewrite. For now: if the community reviews and the Fat Score already have you considering it, trust the instinct. We did, and we are already planning the return trip.

The Verdict
Royal Champagne earns its reputation on two things: the setting and the staff. The hotel is built into the hillside above Champillon, and the vineyard views from the rooms, the pools, and especially the Bellevue Abysse terrace are as good as this region gets. What's harder to fake is what guests say about the guest experience managers: Anaïs, Lucile, and Enzo turn up by name in reports written months apart, coordinating proposals, honeymoons, and multi-day champagne-house itineraries planned from as far out as four months in advance. That kind of repeated, unprompted naming doesn't happen with scripted service.
Le Royal, the Michelin-starred restaurant, gets real praise for precision and for champagne pairings that actually complement the food rather than decorate it. But the second restaurant's value is questioned at four-figure room rates, and more than one guest flags getting charged extra for breakfast items like omelettes at that price point, a fair complaint. The spa is large, with indoor and outdoor pools over the vines, but a couple of detailed reviews describe the interior layout as oddly configured next to more polished Austrian-style spa hotels, worth knowing if wellness is your main reason for booking. Front-desk pacing also slips occasionally, most often at breakfast.
Getting off property is the real catch: taxis to Reims are expensive and can be unreliable, so budget for the hotel car or e-bikes rather than assuming easy access. This suits a couple or an anniversary trip planned well in advance, not a spontaneous long weekend without a car.

What People Say
This is a Virtuoso property, so book through a travel advisor for the extra perks — Hyatt affiliation doesn't get you much here.
It functions more like a Mr & Mrs Smith-style boutique property. Despite the Hyatt tie-in, standard loyalty perks generally aren't available, so working with a Virtuoso-affiliated travel advisor gets priority treatment and better contacts.
The property looks like something out of a storybook, and every single detail felt superior.
From the moment we booked, the staff made this feel special — the room, food, spa, and holiday decor were all top-tier. Tanja and Lucille in particular made our three-day stay memorable. We'll certainly be back.

The location near Hautvillers, a village steeped in history, makes this place special any time of year.
The restaurant Royal is well worth visiting on its own, and the views from the hotel are simply magical. Attention to detail and service are incredible throughout the property. I'd happily come back at any time of year.
It's not fair that at over €1,000 a night, we still got charged extra for omelettes at breakfast.
The service was outstanding overall, and the pool and hot tub experience was a real highlight of the stay. But at these room rates, specialty breakfast items should just be included rather than nickel-and-dimed onto the bill.
Every time I return, from the location to the staff to the spa, it's simply top-notch.
This time we stayed in Suite #2 with gorgeous vineyard views, and dinner at Le Royal was absolutely divine. The breakfast buffet had plenty of options including tasty à la carte selections. Whether it's the serene setting or the impeccable service, this hotel never disappoints.
Travel + Leisure readers voted this their favorite resort in all of France.
This recognition reflects a broad consensus among well-traveled readers who've stayed across properties nationwide and chose this one as their top pick, which lines up with how often loyal guests say they return.
The 15,000-square-foot spa here overlooking the vineyards is one of the reasons this property anchors any Champagne itinerary.
Editorially, this is consistently flagged as one of the essential stays in Epernay, with rooms and restaurants that make the most of the surrounding bucolic vineyard setting.
I'm partial to this one — the indoor/outdoor pool overlooking the vineyards and that huge spa setup make it an easy recommendation for a wellness trip.
The spa complex has a sauna, steam room, and hot tub, plus a Michelin-starred restaurant for dinner and an excellent breakfast. Rooms have little balconies facing the gardens, a well-stocked inclusive minibar, and a proper deep bathtub. The outdoor restaurant is great for sundowners, and if you go, don't skip the croque monsieur at lunch.
have a croque monsieur for lunch. The ones they make there are outrageously good.in their words
Our two nights felt seamless from the airport transfer straight through to the champagne welcome at check-in.
We stayed in a Junior Suite with a balcony over Champillon, and our room was ready right after lunch even though official check-in was hours away. The Clarins facial at the spa was exactly what we needed post-flight, and both dinners — at Le Bellevue and Le Royal — were genuinely impressive. The concierge arranged two champagne house visits and a hotel car for the day, which made the whole region easy to navigate.
A welcome glass of champagne set the tone immediately.in their words
I could sit on that terrace all day — the views alone are worth the trip.
The Bellevue Abysse Bar terrace is my favorite spot on property; it's open all day so you can just walk right in for a spontaneous glass of wine or plan an evening around it. It has that rare balance of feeling premium without being stuffy — smart casual works, and nobody's gatekeeping. The seating is comfortable, the service is attentive without hovering, and the view of the valley genuinely stops conversation.
This was a totally seven-star experience thanks to Anaïs, who planned our entire trip over four months.
Our Guest Experience Maker crafted everything from scratch: Veuve Clicquot and Ruinart tastings, a private vineyard driver, a Royal Picnic out in the champagne landscape, and every dinner reservation handled without us lifting a finger. The hotel itself is stunning, but honestly it's people like Anaïs who make you want to come back and host events there. Every detail was handled with real warmth, not just efficiency.

Every time I return, it somehow feels even better than the last visit.
The architecture and the views over the Marne Valley justify the hype on their own, but what really sets this place apart is the service — nothing is ever too much trouble. Thomas, Sarah, Clairmont, Julie on reception, and Stephanie all made this stay memorable with their warmth. Rooms were stylish, clean, and easy to enjoy.
Check-in felt like a welcome ceremony, and our junior suite in Room 18 gave us total privacy.
We were ushered to a cozy couch and handed champagne while everything else was handled for us — the soaring ceilings and bathroom in our room were spectacular, and they even surprised us with treats for our anniversary. The one real snag was getting to Reims that first night — over €100 for a taxi — but Ubers were fine after that, if still pricey. Renting the e-bikes and following the path down to the villages below ended up being a highlight of the whole trip.
Rooms are lovely, but the front desk should get better at reading the room when guests are having a tough moment.
Our rooms were super nice and decorated in style, but a few reception interactions left us feeling uncomfortable rather than reassured. Both restaurants, including the Michelin one, are good, though the value for money is genuinely worth discussing at these prices. I also felt the spa area was oddly laid out and could benefit from the kind of design expertise you see at top Austrian spa hotels — that said, we'll definitely be back.
This is where I proposed, and the team helped make it perfect down to monitoring the weather.
I picked this hotel for what might be the most beautiful view in all of Champagne, but Lucile, my guest experience manager, turned the whole trip into something unforgettable — from lunches and private tours to arranging a photographer for the proposal itself. Breakfast was outstanding every morning, the restaurant reliably excellent, and the wine list thoughtfully curated. I'd tell anyone to rent the hotel bikes and ride out toward Hautvillers.
The lobster pasta with caviar from room service was so good it needs no extra words.
Our room was spacious and modern, and we got a little welcome gift from the hotel, which was a nice touch. Breakfast let us mix set options with à la carte, and everything was delicious. We ordered room service twice, and it was genuinely restaurant-quality — that lobster pasta with caviar was a standout. The spa and outdoor pool were incredible too.

I've visited many times before and it keeps getting better — the chef here deserves three Michelin stars, not one.
The rooms are very well planned with every convenience and stunning views over the vines, and this visit coincided with the vendange in full swing. All three dinners in the Royal restaurant were sensational and will stay with me for a long time. The staff under M. Charlier were fantastic — charming, efficient, and welcoming throughout.
Undoubtably one of the very best hotels in France.in their words
Someone tracked down a beekeeper just to answer a question I asked about honey — that's the level of service here.
The understated beauty of the property, especially the chandelier displays, creates something genuinely special. Staff greeted me by name every time without fail. Rooms are spacious with spectacular bathrooms and vineyard views you can't get anywhere else nearby — no unnecessary pomposity, just warm, perfect service.
They treated us like people of status even though we're just regular folks who splurged with some hard-earned winnings.
Every staff member pampered us throughout the stay, the bartender took great care of us, and the food was excellent — right down to the mystery foam garnish. My only complaint was the rain shower in our bathroom, which sprayed in odd directions instead of falling straight down.
The only downside was the rain shower that sprayed in several directions instead of falling properly.in their words
Enzo took care of every detail of our trip planning starting back in January — trains, dinners, champagne tours, transfers, all of it.
We've stayed at many five-star resorts, and this is among the very best. Our suite was beautiful, the minibar was complimentary, and my wife's massage and facial were fantastic. The meal at Le Royal was spectacular — they fully accommodated her vegetarian request, and she called it one of the finest meals she's ever had.
