About
We built Fat Voyage because the world's best hotels deserve more than a star rating and a stock photo.
The Fat Score
The Fat Score is our editorial rating for luxury hotels, expressed on a 0–10 scale with five sub-dimensions: Service, Design, Location, Dining, and Wellness. It synthesizes the signals that matter — not press releases, not paid placements, not the curated PR cycle.
A detailed firsthand account from someone who's stayed at twenty luxury properties carries more weight than a hundred one-line ratings. A review written six weeks ago counts for more than one from three years back. When five independent sources agree on a specific strength or weakness, that signal gets amplified. One bad night doesn't tank a score; persistent issues across recent stays do.
The result is the most honest picture of a luxury hotel you'll find anywhere — one that tells you exactly where a property excels and where it compromises.
The Sources
Every Fat Score draws from three source categories, weighted by depth and credibility.
Luxury travel communities
The most active subreddits in luxury travel — where travelers paying $1,000–5,000 per night write multi-paragraph trip reports about properties they actually stayed at. Detailed firsthand experience.
Editorial publications
Professional travel critics from Condé Nast Traveler, Travel + Leisure, Departures, Forbes Travel Guide, AFAR, The Telegraph Travel, and Robb Report. Expertise plus access.
Verified guest reviews
Detailed Google reviews from real guests — the long, specific ones with anecdotes. Brief one-line ratings carry minimal weight; thoughtful 200-word accounts carry more.
“Travel generously. Live fully. Voyage fat.”
The Tiers
Every hotel in the collection sits in one of three tiers, drawn from its Fat Score. The score stays visible as supporting detail; the tier is the headline.
Refreshed Quarterly
Every Fat Score is re-gathered and re-calculated from scratch every quarter. Renovations, management changes, staff turnover, new chefs, new spa partners — all of it surfaces in fresh signals. A property's score can move materially between refreshes.
Every hotel page shows when its score was last refreshed, how many signals fed into it, how many distinct sources those came from, and when the next refresh is scheduled. Hard numbers, not vibes.
What we won't do
No paid placements
Hotels cannot pay to appear in the collection, to raise their Fat Score, or to remove negative signals.
No editorial veto
Hotels can request a factual review on specific claims. They cannot soften editorial judgment. Scores reflect what independent travelers report.
No score-for-stay trades
A complimentary press stay does not raise a hotel's Fat Score. Hospitality earns a Founders' Verdict, never a higher number.
No removing inconvenient signals
Negative consensus stays in the score. The point of aggregating real signals is to surface them — even when hotels would prefer otherwise.
Frequently asked
Questions, answered
What is the Fat Score?
The Fat Score is Fat Voyage's editorial rating system for luxury hotels, expressed on a 0–10 scale with five sub-dimensions: Service, Design, Location, Dining, and Wellness. It synthesizes signals from luxury travel communities, editorial publications, and verified guest reviews — weighted by source credibility, depth of insight, and recency. A higher Fat Score reflects stronger consensus among independent travelers who actually paid to stay.
How is the Fat Score calculated?
For every hotel, we gather raw signals from seven luxury-focused travel communities, Google Reviews, and major editorial publications (Condé Nast Traveler, Travel + Leisure, Departures, Forbes Travel Guide). Each signal is weighted by source credibility tier (detailed trip reports from luxury communities count for the most), recency (newer signals weigh more), and consensus (when multiple independent sources agree, the signal is amplified). The aggregated score is rounded to one decimal place.
What are the Fat Score tiers?
Selection comes before scoring. We don't cover every property that brands itself luxury — only the ones worth writing about. Of those, only hotels scoring 8.0 or higher stay in the collection. Within that band, hotels are grouped into three tiers. Fat Legend (9.0+) is reserved for properties that consistently exceed expectations across every dimension. Fat Favorite (8.5–8.9) is the sweet spot — properties regulars return to. Fat Approved (8.0–8.4) is the floor; on a consumer site 8.0 means "pretty good," but on the Fat scale it's the minimum to make the cut.
How often are scores refreshed?
Scores are re-gathered and re-calculated from scratch every quarter. Renovations, management changes, and staff turnover all surface in fresh signals, so a property's score can move materially between refreshes. Each hotel page shows the last refresh date and the next scheduled refresh.
Do you accept payment from hotels?
No. Fat Voyage never accepts payment for inclusion, ranking, or favorable coverage. Hotels cannot pay to appear in the collection, to raise their Fat Score, or to remove negative signals. Revenue comes from optional affiliate booking links — disclosed under every Reserve button — and the booking commission does not change a hotel's Fat Score or its placement.
What if a hotel disagrees with its score?
Hotels can request a factual review within a defined window if they believe a specific claim is inaccurate. We update factual errors; we do not soften editorial judgments. Scores reflect what independent travelers report — not what hoteliers prefer.
How is Fat Voyage different from other luxury hotel sites?
Most luxury hotel sites publish one editor's first-hand experience, or operate as booking platforms with member-written reviews. Fat Voyage is different: every Fat Score synthesizes dozens of independent signals from people who paid to stay — Reddit luxury communities, major editorial publications, and verified Google reviews — into a single editorial verdict. The wedge is the synthesis. No other site at this tier aggregates community signals at this depth.
Is Fat Voyage used by AI search engines?
Fat Voyage is built to be. Every page is structured to be machine-readable and answer-first, so assistants like ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, and Google's AI Overviews can cite it when a traveler asks where to stay. As discovery shifts toward AI assistants, that's deliberately where we focus — one honest, well-sourced verdict per hotel, made to be the answer rather than another listicle to scroll past.
Fat Travel
“Fat” isn't about indulgence. The term comes from r/fattravel, an online community for travelers with the financial comfort to travel generously — people who fly business or first, stay at properties that cost what they cost, and care more about whether the experience lives up to the bill than what the bill is.
Fat Voyage is built for that audience. The voice is direct. The scoring is honest. The aim is to help you pick the right property for the trip you're actually taking, not the one a brochure thinks you want to take.
Travel generously. Live fully. Voyage fat.
