The Verdict

Bill Bensley's Capella Ubud is theatrical luxury at its finest—a tented camp where every canvas pavilion tells the story of a 19th-century European explorer, complete with copper bathtubs and saltwater pools carved into the Keliki Valley jungle. The service operates at an almost psychic level, with staff who remember your coffee preferences by day two and arrange doctors when needed. Yes, you're paying premium rates to sleep in what's technically a tent, but when that tent has museum-quality antiques and you're falling asleep to jungle symphonies, the magic justifies the expense. The only real weakness is accessibility—those romantic riverside tents require serious hiking, and the design prioritizes atmosphere over practical conveniences like proper lighting controls.

What People Say

Mixed read

We ruled out Capella Ubud — it looks unique but potentially not a luxe comfort stay.

The wooden toilets staring at the bed do not sound too romantic for our honeymoon! We've heard it's visually striking and different, but when we're looking for intimate luxury, some of the design choices seem like they prioritize theater over comfort. We ended up going with Amandari instead.

Unique visual design
Distinctive architecture
Questionable comfort for romance
Design over practicality

I much prefer Mandapa over Capella — that Capella is fun to look at but not to stay in.

I love some Bensley projects but not all, and I love some Capellas but not all. This one falls into the category of properties that photograph beautifully but lack comfort when you're actually living there. It's just not comfortable for an extended stay. The Mandapa, on the other hand, is fabulous with good food and a lovely jungle setting.

Striking visual design
Unique Bensley architecture
Comfort issues for extended stays

I'd recommend Capella Ubud — it's designed by Bill Bensley and totally depends on your style.

It's more rustic since it's a tented camp experience, but it's a really cool property. The Bill Bensley design is incredible if you're into that theatrical, storytelling approach to luxury. It's definitely not for everyone — you need to embrace the concept — but if you do, it's unlike anything else in Ubud.

Each villa is designed like a luxurious tent and perfectly integrated into the surrounding nature, complete with a private pool and breathtaking jungle views. The service is simply exceptional — the entire staff is incredibly warm and genuinely anticipates every wish before you express it. It feels like living right in the middle of paradise, and the management ensures everything is perfectly organized down to the smallest detail.

The best hotel in Bali! I stayed for two days and it was absolutely gorgeous, like living in the jungle.

I had a massage while listening to the rain — so relaxing! All the staff were incredibly kind, and when I felt unwell, someone immediately helped me to my room and ordered ginger tea. They had a campfire at night where we roasted marshmallows, and the tented hotel experience was unlike anything else on the island.

Beyond impressed with the hotel and service — it's unlike any hotel in the area and will not be our last Capella.

Everything from the spectacular room design to the delicious food (not one bite was bad) to the incredible massages was truly next-level. The way staff went out of their way to help showed how much they love working here. We felt warmth and happiness from the whole team, and it's genuinely one of the top hotels I've ever stayed at.

Most amazing hotel we've ever stayed at — each tent is uniquely decorated with a different theme in 5-star manner.

Copper bathtub, outdoor shower, every room has its own saltwater pool. The service was immaculate — every person seemed to know our daily schedule and asked how we enjoyed activities. They were friendly and wanted to share Balinese culture, from front desk to bartenders. We will seek out Bensley hotels from this point forward due to our stay here.

Credibility-weighted

Detailed trip reports from luxury communities and major editorial reviews carry the most weight. Brief ratings add context, not conviction.

Recent experiences matter more. Renovations, management changes, and staff turnover all surface in fresh signals.

Consensus-driven

When independent sources agree on a strength or weakness, that signal gets amplified. One bad night doesn't tank a score.
