Strengths & trade-offs
Belmond Hotel Caruso
Strengths
- Staff repeatedly named and remembered across separate stays, from front desk to the pool team
- The infinity pool and cliffside terrace views are consistently called the best on the coast
- Quiet, garden-set Ravello location away from the crowds of Positano and Amalfi, with free boat and shuttle transfers
- Caruso Grill and Il Pantaleone draw strong, repeated praise, including from non-guests who came only for lunch
Trade-offs
- Frequent on-property weddings, sometimes daily in peak season, can crowd the pool and pull staff focus
- A few guests found the atmosphere more subdued and correct than warm, especially outside of milestone occasions
- The Belmond name is not a guarantee of consistency; travelers report uneven experiences at sister properties

- Occasional front-desk mood-reading and service pacing lapses
- Getting to Reims or exploring beyond the hotel can mean costly, unreliable taxis

|---|---|---|
| Tier | Fat Legend | Fat Legend |
| Overall Fat Score | 18Even | 18Even |
| Service | 18 Guests keep naming individual staff by name (Giovanni at the Grill, Donatella on weddings, Antoinetta at the front desk), and the proactive touches, like a concierge rerouting a Pompeii stop, back it up. | 18.5+0.5 Guest experience managers like Anaïs and Lucile plan entire itineraries months out, and reception staff are named constantly, though one couple felt the front desk misread the room's mood during a tense moment. |
| Design | 18Even The terraced gardens, the frescoed bar ceiling, and the infinity pool draw the most consistent praise, though a couple of reports flag a tired hotel bar. | 18Even Reports keep returning to the vineyard-view rooms and soaring ceilings, with only the odd complaint that the spa's layout feels oddly planned. |
| Location | 18.5 Perched 350 metres above the coast, it trades beach access for quiet gardens and terrace views, with a shuttle to Amalfi and a free boat to Positano covering the gap. | 19+0.5 Perched above Épernay in the Marne Valley with vineyard views guests call the best in Champagne, close enough to Hautvillers and the Champagne houses for day trips. |
| Dining | 17.5Even Caruso Grill and the pasta and pizza classes get singled out repeatedly, with one guest ranking the food above Michelin places tried elsewhere on the same trip. | 17.5Even The Michelin restaurant and its champagne pairings draw consistent praise, though one report clocked a 30-minute wait for poached eggs at breakfast. |
| Wellness | 16.5 The pool and its views get called some of the best on the coast, but a mid-June visit found it crowded and wedding traffic can crowd the grounds on busy days. | 17.5+1 The spa's pool and hot tub over the vines is the recurring highlight, though at least one visitor thought the space itself needed a rethink on design and flow. |

The Verdicts
Belmond Hotel Caruso
Most people who write about the Caruso end up talking about the pool and then, almost despite themselves, about a specific person: Giovanni running the Grill, Donatella pulling off a wedding, Carmine at the bar with a gimlet that gets its own mention. That's the pattern here, not the marble or the frescoes. A fifty-plus room hotel running weddings most days of the summer still has front-desk and pool staff getting named by first name, which is a harder trick to pull off than it sounds.
Some real trade-offs are worth pricing in. A few guests found the mood more correct than warm outside of milestone occasions: one couple who eloped there said the front desk congratulated them on arrival, and then the day was never mentioned again over dinner. Weddings on property, sometimes daily in peak season, crowd the pool and pull staff attention elsewhere; one traveller described the pool as noticeably fuller in mid-June than they'd expected from the photos. The Belmond name buys nothing on its own either: one guest who loved Caruso came back with a rough account of La Residencia, hairs and stains left on the bed, staff distracted by weddings there too, which is exactly why this is a hotel you're booking, not a brand you're trusting. Opinion splits on food too. Plenty call the Grill the best meal of their Italy trip, but a few who'd also done Il San Pietro or Borgo Santandrea rated those higher on the plate itself.
None of that changes what happens most nights: a terrace view people keep calling the best on the coast, a pool that reads better in person than in photos, and a team that will spray and brush olive oil off a white shirt without being asked twice. Book it for the setting above Ravello and the people who run it, and treat wedding season as a scheduling question, not a reason to look elsewhere.
Royal Champagne Hotel & Spa
The view sells the first night; the planning is why people come back with a proposal ring or a honeymoon booked months out. Rooms look over the vines from Champillon, and the pools and the Bellevue Abysse terrace get named as the best outlook in the region by people who've stayed at plenty of other places in it. What's harder to just book is the guest experience team: Anaïs spent four months building one couple's itinerary around Veuve Clicquot and Ruinart tastings and a private vineyard driver, and Lucile tracked the weather forecast for days to get a proposal moment right, then arranged the photographer herself. That's not concierge box-ticking, that's someone who remembers what she promised in January.
Le Royal earns its Michelin star honestly: the pairings work with the food rather than around it, and the tasting menus get called some of the best in France by guests who've eaten around. At four-figure room rates, though, getting charged extra for an omelette at breakfast is a fair complaint, and the second restaurant's value gets questioned by more than one guest. The spa's layout feels oddly planned next to the polished Austrian wellness hotels it's otherwise being compared to, even with a genuine indoor-outdoor pool and vineyard views. Front-desk service occasionally misreads the room, mostly around breakfast pacing, and getting to Reims without the hotel car or e-bikes means expensive, sometimes unreliable taxis.
None of that undoes the case. This is a hotel for a couple planning something months in advance, not a spontaneous weekend without a car arranged. Book it for the view, the restaurant, and staff who actually deliver on a plan made in January.
