That history is the actual case for staying. Guests describe staff remembering a tea order from the year before, a concierge who sent a barber to the hotel before a 6:30am flight, a doorman who rearranged a whole day around a Lion's Head hike. The afternoon tea alone is worth the detour even if you're not staying the night, and the Chef's Table dinner gets described as one of the best meals anyone had in the city.

The flaws that show up are real and worth pricing in before you book. One couple had a chef's table reservation simply vanish with no apology; another group's carefully specified gluten-free and vegan order arrived as eggs, salmon and chicken sandwiches at an in-law's 70th. A guest got burned by a scorching poolside side table nobody had thought to fix. None of it is constant, but at these rates it shouldn't happen at all, and service here swings between the best hospitality in the city and genuine misses depending on which night you catch.

If flawless, hushed consistency matters more to you than character, a newer address closer to the water might suit you better.
