One&Only is planning its first Fiji resort on Nacula Island, in the far-flung Yasawa group, across a 127-acre site. The brief is 40 accommodations and 20 residences, built as a joint venture between Kerzner and BSP Life. The name isn't locked in yet, so for now it's being referred to simply as One&Only Fiji, and the opening is slated for 2029.

The Yasawas are about as remote as Fiji gets, which is exactly the kind of setting this brand tends to do well, and 40 keys on 127 acres points to a lot of space per guest. We haven't been, and 2029 is a long runway, so this is anticipation, not a verdict. What we'll be watching for is how they handle access to an island this far out, and whether the residences crowd the resort or sit cleanly apart from it.

Almost every traveller who stays at One&Only Cape Town comes home naming a specific person: Menzi, who anticipated requests before they were asked, or Zaza, or Elton at the Vista Bar. One guest mentioned liking the spa's carrot cake in passing and had a whole one delivered to her room that evening. Another had a doctor in the room within thirty minutes of asking, at 10pm, prescription delivered by midnight. That's the level this hotel operates at, and the setting backs it up: right at the V&A Waterfront, walkable and safe, with Table Mountain filling the view from the lobby, the rooms and the pool deck. Nobu and ROOI both come up often and specifically, and breakfast gets mentioned almost as much as the staff do. Price it against what long-term Cape Town residents point out: you're paying international resort rates for something closer to a very good island resort than a distinctly Cape Town stay. One 2025 guest had construction starting at 7:30am despite being promised 10 — worth asking about directly before booking. A loyalty guest in 2026 also found the upgrade flexibility didn't match what the brand promises at its other properties, which matters if repeat recognition is the reason you're picking a One&Only over any other five-star in the city. Travellers wanting more local texture over polish tend to land at the Silo instead. None of that undercuts the case. The rooms are spacious and well kept, the pool and spa are well above what most hotels offer, and the staff solve problems, a dishwasher favor, a birthday, a bad night, without making you ask twice. Book this for the location, the pool and spa, and service that puts a name and a face on nearly every good thing that happens to you here.

The reason to book is the villas, and the reviews back it up. Cliffside architecture cut into the jungle above the Pacific, private plunge pools, and views guests keep calling among the best they've had anywhere, treehouse or cliff. Jetty Beach is the rare genuinely swimmable stretch on this coast, thanks to the protective jetty, and Carao gets named the standout table on property more than any other, with the fish chorizo and tacos coming up often. The setting and the villas are the reason to book, and they hold up. What you're trading for that seclusion is a property so spread out that golf carts become the whole logistics of your stay, and that's the real cost here, not the bugs or the heat. Waits of 20 to 60 minutes show up routinely, even at low occupancy: one traveller waited over an hour on a Tuesday in July with the resort near 40% full, after a host had promised ten minutes. There's quietly upcharged bottled water (ask for the free filtered house water instead), a $700-an-hour jet ski, and one guest was handed a cash deposit back in pesos instead of the dollars they'd left, then charged a commission to convert it back. Staff turnover explains why service swings: one host tracked down two O&O hats for a guest who wanted souvenirs, while other shifts feel scripted and hover without actually helping. The food outside Carao is good rather than great, and the wildlife program, coatis raiding minibars, a canine unit, on-site biologists, adds a real sense of place few resorts bother with. Book it for the villas and the privacy, ideally November through February for the better weather and fewer bugs; travellers wanting steadier, more predictable service tend to end up next door at the Rosewood instead. If the cart waits or the small nickel-and-dime charges would eat at you, weigh that before you book. For the setting alone, nothing else on this coast looks like it.

People come back to One&Only Palmilla year after year for one reason above all: the staff remember them. Guests describe assigned pool loungers held for the whole stay, hosts who fix a problem before it's raised, a return rate one longtime guest pegged near 50%. Add one of the only swimmable beaches in the corridor and hacienda grounds that read as genuinely decades-old rather than landscaped last season, and you understand why people who also love Las Ventanas or Four Seasons Cabo del Sol still concede Palmilla's staff are a step above. That loyalty is being asked to cover real gaps. Food and drink pricing here is aggressive even by Cabo standards — a $30 margarita and a $35 guacamole show up as complaints across several years of stays, not a single bad night. The rooms split people: some find real character in the older suites, others (usually mid-comparison with the newer Four Seasons down the road) call the bathrooms dated. Recent reports also flag spa scheduling errors and slow follow-through from management when something goes wrong, plus an odd, specific gap — no water refill station or cooler anywhere on property, so hydration outside meal service means chasing down housekeeping. Book this for the grounds and the people, not the room category or the wine list. If old-world hacienda charm and a beach you can actually swim past the shoreline on matter more than a renovated bathroom, it beats the newer competition nearby, and even guests who prefer Las Ventanas' room stock still admit Palmilla's service culture is the one to beat. Go in with a bar tab budget already decided, and book it for the staff and that beach.

North Malé Atoll, Maldives

Reethi Rah sells scale, and it delivers scale: 109 acres and twelve beaches, linked by bike paths and buggies, with a 45-minute yacht transfer from Malé that skips the seaplane circus most Maldives trips involve. Staff turn up by name across a lot of these reports: a butler who solved a middle-of-the-night health scare, a buggy driver who detoured to show a hidden beach path, a dive instructor who narrated the reef like he'd built it himself. That kind of detail is hard to invent, and it's the strongest case for booking here. The island is man-made, though, and the reef reflects it: snorkeling generally means a boat out rather than a walk off your deck, a real trade against a place like Soneva Fushi where the house reef is the point. Money mechanics are the other thing to price in. A foilboarding session billed at $730 after being told the gear was "included" isn't a one-off complaint, and daily dining credit that can't cover room service is a small but recurring irritation at these rates. One recent account also describes the rooms and pool decks as tight for the category and the service as closer to a good Caribbean resort than the rest of the Maldives luxury field, so which villa and which team you draw seems to matter. Confirm in writing what's actually included before you touch the water-sports desk, and don't expect the room itself to be the headline. Book Reethi Rah for the size of the island, the beach-to-beach variety, and staff who seem to remember you by the second day, not for the reef outside your door.
