Four Seasons Hotel Rio de Janeiro is set to transform the Marina Palace, locally known as the Marinao, in the Leblon neighbourhood, with around 120 keys and a 2029 opening that marks the brand's return to Brazil. Reworking an existing landmark rather than building new gives the project a known quantity to start from, and Leblon is among Rio's most desirable beachfront districts. The roughly 120-key scale keeps it on the intimate side for a city hotel.

We have not stayed, and with a 2029 target this is a long way out, so treat it as anticipation. What we will be watching for is how the conversion of an existing tower handles the room layouts and views, and how Four Seasons positions a returning Brazilian flagship. On paper, a Leblon beachfront address is a strong foundation for the brand's re-entry.

Book a river-view room here and what arrives is a building doing more work than most five-stars bother with: Jean-Michel Gathy's lobby has floor-to-ceiling glass, gardens threaded through the public spaces, and a "basic" room that runs close to 900 square feet, bigger than a suite at plenty of competitors. The free boat shuttle to ICONSIAM and the BTS is a genuinely useful perk rather than a gimmick, and the staff seem to actually track who you are: one family had a sick parent looked after with a late-night search for a pharmacy, another had headphones left behind at the airport chased down and delivered before their flight left. That's the kind of thing that makes people say they'll be back, and a lot of them do. The food is the real gap between the reputation and the reality. Breakfast draws specific, repeated complaints: thin options for dietary restrictions, staff who don't check in during the meal, no coffee menu unless you ask. A couple who skipped dinner on property after a disappointing lobby lunch and letdown pancakes the next morning isn't a one-off shrug. The Lobby Bar and BKK Social Club are the surprise wins — better than the flagship restaurants by most accounts — but you're not booking this hotel for the breakfast buffet the brand name might imply. Large group bookings can also crowd the pool and breakfast room enough to dent the sense of exclusivity you're paying for, and the spa or sauna being closed for renovation shows up often enough to ask about before you book. The service and the building are what you're actually paying for, and they clear the bar comfortably even with the food underperforming. Families do especially well here: kids' club, tents set up in rooms, staff who remember a toddler's name by day two. Anyone chasing a top-tier breakfast spread might do better elsewhere in the city, but for the room, the river, and a staff that fixes its own mistakes without a fuss, this is one of the best city hotels in Bangkok going.

The Mount Otemanu view from an overwater bungalow is the reason this island is on the list in the first place: these are the biggest bungalows in Bora Bora, the glass floors and lagoon access are the real deal, and the grounds and beach beat every other resort here. Guides like Evans and Aurelien get singled out for their snorkeling tours, and the breakfast buffet and Ari Moana outperform the regional competition. That part of the case holds. The maintenance complaints are real and worth pricing in. One traveller described new spiderwebs turning up daily in an overwater villa and discoloration on bathroom walls near the restaurants that looked, to them, borderline moldy. Front desk and pool service is the patchy half of an otherwise warm staff culture: one guest stood dripping wet while a desk attendant checked in someone else without offering a towel, and another waited three hours for a microwave requested that morning. Nobody swims off their own bungalow deck, either, thanks to a swim-flag system one guest said never once turned green during their stay. Corporate events occasionally take over stretches of beach and pump music into what's sold as a honeymoon setting, worth knowing before you book a peak week. Travellers who also did the St. Regis next door tend to say the same thing: sharper service and better marine life there, bigger rooms and better mountain views here. Book it for the view, the water, and the size of the room, not for flawless execution. Go in knowing the villas are overdue for a real refresh: nothing else on the island touches this lagoon, this bungalow, or these grounds.

If you're booking Istanbul for the water, this is the call. Guests keep describing waking up to the Bosphorus from bed, and the palatial public rooms and view-heavy suites back that up. One traveller watched a yacht pull up beside their restaurant table to collect a fellow guest, mid-meal, with the strait doing its work behind them. The setting and the architecture do the heavy lifting — nothing else in the city puts you on the water quite like this. The food is where this place asks something of you. One guest called breakfast among the best they've had anywhere, gluten-free options included; another found the buffet badly laid out, the stations too far from the tables, and the waiters noticeably less warm than the staff at the pool and spa. Dinner tells a similar story: the cocktail program earns real praise, paintings turned into drinks people order by name, but more than one guest has said the kitchen doesn't quite match the room it's served in. Book expecting the food to trail the setting, not ruin it. It also rewards coming back. One family with five stays behind them described staff who now feel like they know them, an airport pickup that runs itself, everything immaculate. First-timers won't land there on day one, and the front desk gets warmer reviews than the breakfast room does, which tells you service runs unevenly by department rather than across the board. Worth booking for the location and the rooms alone, and returning guests describe a place that starts to feel less like a hotel and more like somewhere they belong. Book it for the water, the palace-scale rooms, and a cocktail on the terrace watching the strait traffic go by.

Geneva doesn't really have a rival to this building. An 1834 lakefront house with frescoed ceilings and gilded moldings, a short walk from the Pont des Bergues, gives you bones no new-build in the city can fake. Izumi's rooftop Japanese cooking gets singled out as worth booking on its own, one guest put it above meals at the George V and Landaa Giraavaru, and the bar built around a bartender named Nicolas comes up as genuinely serious rather than hotel-bar competent. Housekeeping's touches run through nearly every recent review: a dog welcomed warmly at check-in, a spa team praised by name (Maria gets called out specifically), a concierge team that improvised a pasta class with printed keepsake photos for a child rather than treating a request as an inconvenience. Then there's the lobby and café floor, and the story splits sharply from everything else here. One guest describes reserved tables sitting empty, being refused a booking for one anyway, then waiting in the lobby for a menu while later arrivals got served first. Another wrote to the regional office after a hostess dismissed a simple coffee request twice, and the manager spent the conversation defending her instead of addressing what happened; the concierge who intervened, Nicholas, was the one bright spot in that account. That's a real service gap, not a bad night, and it sits oddly against housekeeping and the bar getting near-universal praise. Standard rooms also run small for a historic building at Swiss luxury prices, which is a genuine trade-off rather than photos overselling reality. Renovation work was ongoing into late 2025, but guests say it stayed confined to the corridors. Worth booking for the building, the location, and Izumi alone. Ask for a lake-view room if size worries you, and don't expect the same warmth at the café tables that you'll get from housekeeping and the bar.
