First look
Belmond is turning the seventeenth-century Hacienda Katanchel, about half an hour east of Mérida, into a hotel of roughly thirty-five suites. The draw here is the building and the land more than the room count: a working henequen hacienda from the 1600s, set on a 220-hectare estate that holds a cenote, a sacred well, and the remains of a Mayan pyramid. The name is Mayan for “where one asks for the arch of heaven” — the site was once used as an astronomical observatory.
It’s Belmond’s fourth property in Mexico, but the first to sit inland in the Yucatán rather than on the coast like Maroma. A restoration of this scale is a long project, which is why the opening is slated for 2027.
What we’ll be watching
Whether Belmond keeps the hacienda’s rough edges. The estate ran as a small private nature-reserve hotel in the late 1990s and has genuine bones — a 17th-century henequen works, Mayan pyramid remains, a sacred well. Belmond’s instinct at Maroma was to sand everything smooth; here, the whole point is the patina. We’ll be watching whether the restoration lets the history breathe or replaces it with a very expensive version of a hacienda.
Whether 35 suites across 220 hectares feels generous or lonely. That ratio — roughly one suite per six hectares — is unusually spread out even by Belmond standards, and a hacienda estate of this size can feel either blissfully private or oddly under-staffed. The experience will depend almost entirely on how they program the land.
Whether the cenote and the ruins are genuine features or backdrop. The estate’s Mayan pyramid remains and cenote are the headline differentiators, but pre-opening materials are vague on how guests actually interact with them. Guided access, self-guided paths, or cordoned-off photo ops are three very different things — and only one of them justifies the journey.
Whether the 2027 timeline holds. This is Belmond’s second 2027 opening in Mexico alongside Milaroca on the Pacific coast, and the Katanchel restoration is described as comprehensive on a building that’s been sitting since the 1990s. Phased overruns are common on projects this scale; the date is reported, not confirmed.
