Returning after almost two years, the service felt even more natural, warm rather than stiff, with staff who genuinely seemed happy to help. The rooms are enormous; what this hotel calls a basic room would be sold as a suite most places. We kept meaning to try restaurants around the city but ended up eating at the hotel instead: Riva del Fiume was great, the steak at Brasserie Palmier was some of the best I’ve had, and the biggest surprise was how good the Lobby Bar turned out to be, both for full meals and for coffee and dessert at night. The spa gave me one of the best massages I’ve ever had, and the pool’s river view is stunning.

Walking in felt like stepping into a living gallery, with architecture, water features and art everywhere, yet none of it felt cold or unapproachable. Ing looked after us from arrival, and when our room wasn’t ready she sent us to the Lobby Lounge, which became our favorite spot for the rest of the trip. Our Premier River View Room had a huge picture window over the river, and the team marked our 40th anniversary with handwritten notes, decorations and a bottle of wine. The room and bathroom were beautifully put together and everything felt considered. At the bar, a staff member brought extra lychee garnish for my girlfriend’s cocktail without being asked twice, which was a nice touch.
