Taj is heading to Pondicherry with a 180-key greenfield hotel on a generous 52-acre plot near the colonial-era White Town, looking out to the Bay of Bengal. The development, in partnership with MGM Healthcare, gives Taj room to spread out in a town better known for its French-quarter charm than for large resorts.

Fifty-two acres is a lot of land for 180 keys, which usually translates to low density, gardens and space to breathe. No opening date has been set. What we will be watching for is how the design responds to Pondicherry's distinctive heritage rather than dropping in a generic resort, and whether the Bay of Bengal frontage is genuinely usable or just a backdrop. We have not stayed, so this is anticipation.

There's no faking a 1743 palace floating in the middle of a lake, and that's really the whole case for the Taj Lake Palace. The boat transfer, the rose petals and ceremonial umbrella at the jetty, a flutist at breakfast: this is the sequence that shows up trip after trip, and it's the one thing here nothing else can copy. One guest who has stayed at several of India's converted palaces made a useful point: you can build a palace-style hotel anywhere with modern techniques, but a converted palace lives in a specific time and place. Across the water, the newer Leela wins on room size and polish; nobody who's done both thinks it wins on that feeling. That same comparison explains the complaints. Rooms and bathrooms run genuinely small, and one guest in late 2025 described tiny, musty rooms with bathrooms barely bigger than an airplane's, worn worst where the lake meets the building. Dining splits opinion: plenty of guests call the courtyard and rooftop meals unforgettable, but just as many flag pricing that outruns the food, including one diner at Bhairo pushed toward a $350 bottle of wine with no sommelier to justify it, on a menu fixed at $150 a head. A few recent stays also mention staff asking for named reviews mid-meal, in one case the head chef and manager handing over their own cards at dinner, which cuts against the warmth everyone else describes. And once you're on the island, you're on it: little reason, or way, to leave before checkout. Book it for the history and the setting, not for a modern five-star room or a food-first trip. This is a once-in-a-while splurge rather than a hotel you'd return to for the food or the finishes, but for that arrival by boat and that first sight of white marble on Lake Pichola, nothing else in Udaipur touches it.

Ten tents, eighty staff, and a butler system everyone calls "Batman." One family's picky ten-year-old got an off-menu kitchen and a chef who checked on him several times a day; another guest's Esver built a full birthday setup, cake and flowers included, without being asked to. The safari guides are Aman's own contracted naturalists rather than whoever the park assigns you, and the difference shows up in the sightings: one couple saw six tigers across two drives while friends running independent drivers for a full week saw none. The tiger sightings and the staff who remember what you like are what you're paying for, and on both counts the reviews back it up. The room rate is not the real number, and almost nobody who's stayed disputes that. Rooms run roughly $1,200-1,500 a night, but safaris and transfers are priced separately and steeply: one traveler was quoted $2,400 for a one-way three-hour transfer that an independently booked driver did for $200, and a short stay can add $6,000-7,000 in extras on top of the room. That gap between the nightly rate and the final bill is real, and it's worth arranging your own transfer and private guide pricing before you land rather than after. Canvas walls mean jungle noise, and the odd 3am monkey overhead, comes through at night; a couple of stays mention slow fixes for things like a jammed bathtub, and a few guests found the food more basic than the rest of the experience promised. None of that should keep you away, but it's worth knowing going in. Book the room understanding the extras will roughly multiply it, sort transfers yourself, and go for the sightings and a Batman who works out your rhythm within a day. That's the trip this hotel is actually selling.

The case for the Udaivilas is the setting first, then the staff who match it. Fifty acres on Lake Pichola, peacocks loose on the lawns, courtyards and reflecting pools that do the Mughal-palace look for real rather than as hotel pastiche: nothing else in Udaipur competes with the grounds. Rooms face lake or garden with real space to breathe in, and travellers who've compared categories point to the Premier Room with Pool View as the smart buy: you get the lake outlook without paying private-pool prices for a room that often looks at nothing. One couple ran three nights, meals and boat rides included, at about $2,500. The service matches the setting more often than not. A hotelier travelling on his own dime called the stay a lesson in what intentional hospitality looks like; a honeymooning couple who booked a photo shoot with Anshul said they'd never seen service like it elsewhere. That's not universal: one October guest arrived for a 9:30 dinner reservation to two empty restaurants and staff insisting there was no booking under their name before seating them anyway, with wine that undercut the meal. Confirm your table directly rather than assume it's held. Dining generally is fine rather than a highlight, breakfast plays it safe, and spa and wellness programming are the thin part of the stay if that matters to your trip. Check the wedding calendar before booking. Full buyouts happen, bridal parties arrive days early, and the calm this place is built around can disappear for a stretch. Outside that window, book it for the lake, the grounds, and a level of service most people compare to nowhere else in the city.

Book Raffles Udaipur for the island itself, not just the Raffles name on the door. It sits on its own patch of Udai Sagar, reached by a short dhow boat crossing, and almost every recent guest writes about the same thing before anything else: staff who remember a kid's food allergy, an anniversary, a father's retirement, and act on it. Named staff show up constantly and specifically — Gaurav upgrading a couple to a private pool room after learning it was a celebration, a housekeeping manager named Satya walking a lost family 40 minutes back to the property on his own time, off shift. That's the kind of detail a script doesn't produce. The building earns its own case: colonial-trader-estate architecture, lake views from most rooms, and enough going on (archery, pottery, birdwatching, a nightly Rajasthani show) that several guests say they never left the island and didn't miss the old city. Chef Ranchhod's Rajasthani menu at Sawai gets called out by name more than once, dishes and all. The trade-off is the buffet, which more than one guest flags as repetitive across a multi-night stay, and one detailed account from July 2026 describes a front-desk and restaurant team that walked past guests without acknowledging them and left a tea service without napkins — a real miss, and worth knowing about, though it sits against a much larger stack of specific, glowing service reports naming staff by name, week after week. This isn't a hotel for people who want to walk out the door into old Udaipur; it's for people who want the island to be the whole trip. Families and honeymooners get the most out of it, based on what's written here. Book it for the staff and the setting, and let the boat ride be part of the arrival.
