At roughly $800 a night and up, this is not the cheapest palace hotel on Lake Pichola, but the ones who've stayed elsewhere in the city keep landing back here. And the staff interactions are the other half of the case. One guest travelling with a toddler found the team had handled a request before she'd voiced it; another had a duty manager personally upgrade a babymoon suite. That said, the restaurant reservation system has real cracks: one family's confirmed dinner booking evaporated on arrival, another was told a table didn't exist while both restaurants sat empty, and a bill dispute over an extra dish went unresolved after the server promised a reversal. None of that is catastrophic, but it's worth calling ahead to reconfirm anything booked more than a day out, and it's the one place the famous attentiveness doesn't fully hold.

Just a heads-up: during peak wedding season, blocked-out dates usually mean a full buyout for a bridal party.
Bridal parties start arriving days ahead of the actual wedding and it can be a bit of a nuisance if you're just there for a quiet stay. That aside, the free-roaming peacocks around the property were honestly my favorite part.
This is without question the finest property in Udaipur, and every corner of it photographs like it belongs in a film.
The rooms look out over gardens where peacocks wander past, and the food is genuinely exceptional. Staff are warm and welcoming throughout, always making sure we felt completely at ease. Ibrahim and Madhav Nagpal in particular made our stay one to remember.

The dinner itself at Mewar by Vineet was exceptional, but what happened afterward badly overshadowed it.
I'd told the reservations team ahead of time we were a family of three with a toddler and needed a boat back to Taj Lake Palace by 10pm, and was assured it would be free and arranged. After dinner we were walked to the pier and found nothing had actually been set up. My wife, toddler and I stood alone at a dark lakeside pier for several minutes with bats flying low before the boatman and guard, who'd both disappeared, only reappeared once the boat I'd called for myself from Taj arrived.
