You’re paying for an address nothing else in Udaipur can offer: this is a working wing of the City Palace itself, on Lake Pichola, with the 6pm Aarti ceremony happening steps from your room. That alone would carry a mediocre hotel. What actually shows up is better than mediocre — a 65-room heritage property with original miniature paintings and a working Durbar Hall, jharokha windows framing the lake, and a staff that keeps getting singled out by name for specific things: a butler arranging a surprise cake setup for a birthday, a pool attendant moving a family to a shaded cabana without being asked twice, a guide bringing the palace’s history to life on a room tour.
Not every stay lands the same. One family found the check-in team stalling on room availability that turned out to be false, with leaking air-conditioning and a wet floor in a “palace suite.” A separately booked high tea was badly run: no record of the reservation, an average masala chai, and a table cleared before the group had finished. Dining is generally strong, especially at the Sunset Terrace, but a couple of guests wanted more variety and more Western options on longer stays. The lake-view rooms make the difference — ask for one, because the non-view rooms don’t carry the same weight for the price.
Book it for a special occasion, a heritage-focused trip, or a couple who wants to wake up to Lake Pichola from a private balcony; the location and the room category matter more here than at most hotels. Skip it if you want a large-format resort with extensive spa facilities, since wellness here starts and ends at the pool. For history and setting inside a real palace, on that, nothing else in Udaipur competes.

They garlanded us with Tulsi chains on arrival, which set the tone for the whole trip. We had six of us and they arranged adjacent rooms with a shared balcony, so we could all have coffee together in the morning with the lake view in front of us. The Director of Operations and the Executive Chef both went out of their way for us personally.

Being right next to the City Palace complex made it easy to see Karni Mata Temple and Jag Mandir, and we took a boat ride on Lake Pichola to see the ghats up close. The evening Aarti ceremony at 6pm was a lovely touch we didn’t expect. Dinner at the Sunset Terrace was full of authentic Indian dishes done well, and a member of housekeeping went out of his way on the details. We also took the guided palace and museum tour and it brought the whole history of the place to life.

From arrival, the hotel made us feel genuinely welcomed. The views of Lake Pichola and the Lake Palace from here are some of the best in Udaipur. What set it apart from other nice hotels was that the service stayed attentive without ever feeling like they were hovering.

The hotel itself is stunning, but honestly the hospitality is what made it. Staff at the entrance welcomed us warmly every single day, and one of the buggy drivers ended up shuttling us back and forth multiple times without any fuss. The chef made sure our food was always fresh and even packed food for us to take on our onward journey, which was a really thoughtful touch. Housekeeping checked in regularly to make sure we had everything we needed.

The process was very slow, and the front desk told me the luxury suite category was unavailable when I could see the rooms sitting empty myself and confirmed it on the booking app. Once I pushed back they upgraded me on the spot. The room I did get was smaller than I expected and the air conditioning was leaking, leaving the floor wet enough that my two-year-old slipped. Staffing on the floor felt thin the whole stay. Location is genuinely the best in the city, which is the only reason I’d consider coming back.

The architecture and the views of Lake Pichola around every corner were breathtaking. One staff member coordinated local experiences and transportation for us and anticipated things before we even asked. The infinity pool overlooking the lake was a real highlight, and the location put us close to Jagdish Temple and the bazaars. The property is a genuinely stunning heritage building still tied to the royal family, and getting a room with a view made a real difference to the whole stay. Check-in was warm and easy, and service throughout our three nights was strong overall. One attendant at the pool noticed we were struggling with the heat and moved us to a shaded cabana, then kept us stocked with cold water while we read there every afternoon. A server from the Sunset Terrace also handled the long walk between the pool and kitchen for our lunch orders without complaint, and the chef adjusted a noodle dish to cut all the spice for us without any fuss.

The staff had impeccable etiquette throughout, and a few in particular at the entrance, poolside and in guest relations stood out for how much care they put into small details. Food at the restaurant and the breakfast spread were both excellent. Our room was courtyard and lake facing and felt genuinely beautiful, and the poolside area with its views was unbeatable. The buggy service made getting around the large property easy.

We’d sent our dietary requirements ahead and paid in advance, but after payment they went quiet and I had to call to confirm anything was actually booked. When we arrived nobody at the restaurant knew about our reservation, we were seated at a table meant for four, and it took ten minutes before anyone came to explain the menu, at which point they handed us an a la carte list instead of the high tea we’d paid for. The lake view table we asked for was supposedly full until we noticed three empty ones and had to push to get seated there. The tea itself was bland and the whole thing felt mediocre for what we paid. When we stepped away briefly to take a photo, our trays were cleared without checking whether we were finished.
Taj Fateh Prakash Palace occupies a wing of the historic City Palace complex in Udaipur, on the shore of Lake Pichola in Rajasthan. Travellers wanting the most polished, resort-style service in the city sometimes look instead to the larger lake-island properties.
