At roughly $800 a night and up, this is not the cheapest palace hotel on Lake Pichola, but the ones who've stayed elsewhere in the city keep landing back here. The Mewari architecture — hand-painted frescoes, mirror mosaics, gold-leafed domes across 30 acres of courtyards and reflection pools — earns the reputation on sight, before a single staff interaction happens.

And the staff interactions are the other half of the case. One guest travelling with a toddler found the team had handled a request before she'd voiced it; another had a duty manager personally upgrade a babymoon suite. That said, the restaurant reservation system has real cracks: one family's confirmed dinner booking evaporated on arrival, another was told a table didn't exist while both restaurants sat empty, and a bill dispute over an extra dish went unresolved after the server promised a reversal. None of that is catastrophic, but it's worth calling ahead to reconfirm anything booked more than a day out, and it's the one place the famous attentiveness doesn't fully hold.

Go for a family celebration, a honeymoon, or the kind of trip where you want the property itself to be the event: peacocks on the lawn at dawn, an astrology session, a candle room lit with 22 flames at night. Skip the on-property boat transfers after dark without confirming them twice; one family was left waiting lakeside after a promised return boat never materialized. For everything else, book it for the domes and the lake, and let the staff do the rest.

You're paying for an address nothing else in Udaipur can offer: this is a working wing of the City Palace itself, on Lake Pichola, with the 6pm Aarti ceremony happening steps from your room. That alone would carry a mediocre hotel. What actually shows up is better than mediocre — a 65-room heritage property with original miniature paintings and a working Durbar Hall, jharokha windows framing the lake, and a staff that keeps getting singled out by name for specific things: a butler arranging a surprise cake setup for a birthday, a pool attendant moving a family to a shaded cabana without being asked twice, a guide bringing the palace's history to life on a room tour.

Not every stay lands the same. One family found the check-in team stalling on room availability that turned out to be false, with leaking air-conditioning and a wet floor in a "palace suite." A separately booked high tea was badly run: no record of the reservation, an average masala chai, and a table cleared before the group had finished. Dining is generally strong, especially at the Sunset Terrace, but a couple of guests wanted more variety and more Western options on longer stays. The lake-view rooms make the difference — ask for one, because the non-view rooms don't carry the same weight for the price.

Book it for a special occasion, a heritage-focused trip, or a couple who wants to wake up to Lake Pichola from a private balcony; the location and the room category matter more here than at most hotels. Skip it if you want a large-format resort with extensive spa facilities, since wellness here starts and ends at the pool. For history and setting inside a real palace, on that, nothing else in Udaipur competes.
