I've stayed here twice now, and it's strikingly beautiful with good, not amazing, food, but you have to build in wait time for the golf carts everywhere you go.
The adult pool is small and usually completely full, which was honestly my biggest complaint both times. With so many new properties opening up across Mexico right now, I'm in absolutely no rush to come back a third time.
I've been on my bucket list resort for days now, and I'm currently sitting here waiting on a golf cart that was supposed to arrive an hour ago.
It's a strange mix of amazing and disappointing. The treehouse rooms are spectacular and the food has been excellent, but I got hit with a $15 charge for water at dinner and three gym machines were broken. Getting anywhere on property means a golf cart, and even on a quiet Tuesday in low season the wait has been brutal. It's also incredibly quiet, almost too quiet for someone like me who's more social.
I showed up for my babymoon and found a pregnancy pillow already waiting in the room, which set the tone for the whole stay.
When I mentioned I loved some ceramic cups they didn't have in stock, they tracked down a provider link, and the next day I came back to find those exact cups gifted with balloons and a rattle to celebrate our son. Check-in happened well before noon with no fuss. Our panoramic ocean treehouse had some of the most peaceful views of jungle, cliff, mountain, and ocean I've seen from that far up the hill.
We stayed in the Four-Bedroom Villa #8 as the first guests ever to occupy it, on a trip organized through this community, and it made the whole stay feel special.
Communication before arrival was flawless over email, and we were introduced to our butler, driver, and housekeeping right at the villa. The private gym and outdoor lounge and dining spaces got heavy use, and the tucked-into-the-jungle setting never felt crowded despite being there with a group of friends. Our WhatsApp butler was extremely responsive throughout, buggy service was fairly quick for us, and Jetty Beach's protected section made for genuinely comfortable swimming.
Every building here is stunning and the jungle setting is a jaw dropper, but the logistics wore me down fast.
My average wait for a golf cart ran twenty to twenty-five minutes, then another fifteen minutes for the ride itself, so leaving my room basically meant committing to an hour round trip. The pool everyone photographs was freezing despite eighty-degree weather, and both the spa and kids club were closed for renovations that weren't disclosed anywhere on the website. The bugs near the rooms also made it hard to actually enjoy the plunge pool.
We went for my wife's 40th and it landed as our second-best hotel stay ever, right behind Amanyara.
We splurged on the panoramic cliff villa and it was completely worth it, with a deck pool that stayed warm and usable even in the rain, and a morning view that was out of this world. We ate at Carao twice, including their taco tasting menu with a swapped-in tequila flight instead of wine, and it was by far the best food of the trip. Allora was excellent too, though laughably windy the night we went, and one of the two beaches had washed away from a recent storm and wasn't usable yet.
Having been to many five-star hotels around the world, Mandarina was my favorite in every way, bar none.
Getting there was seamless: customs in fifteen minutes, a driver waiting with a sign, and a smooth hour on the new highway with pineapple farms and the Sierra Madre along the way. My wife and I had the Jungle room with an ocean view that floored us, and my daughters stayed two villas down with an equally incredible view, which the staff arranged specifically because they knew we were traveling as a family. Four days and five nights was exactly the right amount of time to unwind and get to know the property.

Everyone we encountered could not do enough for us, and our panoramic cliff villa was completely private and lovely.
Our butlers Jorge Jimenez and Anglito were exceptional, especially Jorge, who anticipated everything before we even asked. Antonio and Irma at the Treetop bar and Abraham at breakfast, who'd bring my husband ice without being asked, all stood out by name. My one real knock is the food: for the prices charged, it left me a little underwhelmed given everything else on property was so strong.
As a solo woman traveler, I felt completely safe and pampered here, and my hostess Nicte made the whole trip.
Nicte organized my vacation down to the smallest detail and genuinely seemed to care about making it spectacular, which is more than I can say after visiting some of the most luxurious hotels in the world. The spa facial and astrology reading were both excellent, and every staff member I met was professional and welcoming without exception.
We were blown away at first, calling it one of the best-run resorts we'd ever visited, until a complimentary upgrade changed everything.
The upgraded ocean-view room through Amex FHR had a stained carpet and a broken chair, and I flagged it to our host but felt brushed off. The next morning my wife, young daughter, and I all had itchy rashes around our ankles that looked exactly like bed bug bites, while my mother in the other bed had nothing. When I raised it, our host insisted the resort is always clean rather than taking it seriously, and it took three days to reach anyone in customer relations who seemed to actually care.

The air conditioning barely worked in our SUV on the way in, then again in our room for the first two days. The food at Alma and Allora was mediocre for what we were paying, and on day three my partner woke up covered in bug bites that looked a lot like bed bugs.
