Whether the Blue Zone angle shows up in the actual offer or just the branding. Okinawa’s longevity reputation is real — the island genuinely qualifies as one of the world’s original Blue Zones — but translating that into programming guests can feel is hard. We’ll be watching whether the spa and dining reflect it in any substantive way, or whether it stays a concept on the website.
Whether Kengo Kuma’s architecture survives the scale. Kuma is working with local firm Kuniken on what’s reportedly around 127 hotel rooms and 28 villas across 32 acres of Onna Village’s western coast — a larger footprint than you’d expect from a practice known for understatement. The result could be an exceptional integration of built form and subtropical landscape, or it could end up feeling like a lot of buildings.
Whether 2027 is real. Construction started in earnest in early 2024 with a 40-month build estimate, which puts completion well into 2027 at the optimistic end. The file carries ‘late 2026 or 2027’ but the math from the groundbreaking reads more like mid-to-late 2027. We’ll be watching the timeline carefully — this one is Berjaya Land’s show as developer, and a Malaysian-owned project of this size tends to find its own pace.
Whether Four Seasons’ second Japan address finds its footing. The brand’s Tokyo property (at the time of writing, still the only Four Seasons in Japan) operates in a dense urban context — a subtropical island resort is a completely different brief, and the dining and service model will need to be built from scratch for this setting rather than imported from the brand template.

The resort is expected to open in 2027, with some sources pointing to the second quarter of that year. Construction began in earnest in early 2024 with a reported 40-month build timeline, so late 2026 is possible but 2027 is the more realistic read. Treat any date as approximate until Four Seasons makes an official announcement.
Where is Four Seasons Resort and Residences Okinawa located?
The resort sits in Onna Village on Okinawa’s western coast — sometimes called the ‘Sunset Strip’ — near Manzamo Cape. The 32-acre beachfront site is part of a larger 100-acre master plan development, with easy highway access from Naha Airport.
Is this Four Seasons’ first hotel in Japan?
