The honest review of Four Seasons Hotel Kyoto

Four Seasons Hotel Kyoto — Kyoto, Japan — A low-rise Four Seasons built around a historic pond garden 6 photos

The verdict

The garden is the thing here. The pond, the koi, the heron that shows up some mornings, the bamboo lining the driveway: it’s rare for a city hotel in Kyoto to feel like it has grounds at all, and this one does, spread across four low floors instead of stacked into a tower. Guests who’ve stayed in the rooms overlooking the pond say it’s what they miss most once they’ve checked out, and the indoor pool with its steam rooms and plunge pools is a genuine standout rather than an afterthought gym add-on.

The service is mostly what sells it: a cultural ambassador walking a guest through origami and a temple route, halal meals arranged for a family’s suite without fuss, a maiko performance timing passed along by a bartender to someone who wasn’t even staying there. That’s not universal. One guest’s engraved perfume bottle, left at the front door, went unacknowledged for days during a shipping back-and-forth that should have taken an hour. Another sat through an hour-long wait for a burger in an empty restaurant and got charged for the appetizer they ate while waiting. And check-in itself comes with an upsell script some travelers find jarring: breakfast isn’t included by default, and room upgrades get offered as paid add-ons rather than handed over the way they might be elsewhere. Book through a travel advisor with Four Seasons Preferred Partner status and most of that disappears, breakfast and credit included.

It’s worth it for the garden and the pool alone, and the sushi omakase on property is good enough that you don’t need to leave for dinner. Families do particularly well here: koi-feeding and kids’ amenities come up constantly. If you want something sleeker and more design-forward, the newer Kyoto properties will out-style it, but nothing else in the city gives you this much room to breathe.

The five scores

Service 18/20

Families and solo guests both describe staff who remember names and arrange halal meals or origami lessons, though one guest’s lost perfume went unresolved for days.

Rooms & Design 17.5/20

The pond garden with koi, turtles and a heron anchors a spread-out, four-floor property that some call more dated than sleek newer Kyoto rivals.

Location 16.5/20

A short walk into central Kyoto and Higashiyama works for most, though the bamboo forest and monkey park are a longer drive.

Dining 17/20

The sushi omakase draws repeat praise and the breakfast buffet (those blueberry pancakes) gets singled out, but one diner waited an hour for a burger at a half-empty restaurant.

Wellness 17/20

The indoor pool, steam rooms, sauna and hot-cold plunge pools get called some of the best in the city by multiple guests with kids and without.

Strengths

  • The pond garden with koi, turtles and seasonal birds gives the property a rare sense of grounds in central Kyoto
  • Staff consistently arrange personal touches, from dietary accommodations to cultural experiences like origami and temple walks
  • The sushi omakase restaurant is repeatedly called a highlight, sometimes the best meal of a whole Japan trip
  • Indoor pool with steam rooms, sauna and plunge pools stands out even against other Four Seasons properties
  • Works well for families, with staff patience toward kids and koi-feeding a recurring favorite activity

Trade-offs

  • Check-in upselling for breakfast and room upgrades catches guests off guard, especially those used to automatic perks elsewhere
  • At least one guest reports a mishandled lost item and slow, indifferent follow-up from staff
  • The building reads as more dated than some of Kyoto’s newer luxury openings
  • Restaurant service can be slow, with one report of an hour-long wait in a near-empty dining room

From the personalized welcome to our room overlooking the peaceful garden, everything about this stay felt right. We loved the buffet breakfast and got to see newly hatched ducklings in the garden, which was such a charming surprise. Anca Constantin Jul 2026

The hotel is beautiful with elegant design and real attention to detail throughout. Service was outstanding and the whole stay exceeded what I expected going in. If I’m back in Kyoto, I’m staying here again without a second thought.

Our upgraded room didn’t have much of a view, but the staff made up for it with genuinely kind, fast service everywhere else.

The breakfast buffet was amazing and laundry service was impeccable and fast. The pool was clean and modern, and we loved our stay overall, even though the view from our room wasn’t the highlight.

  • Fast laundry turnaround
  • Clean, modern pool
  • Room view underwhelmed despite upgrade

Outdoor dining beside the pond in summer was a trip highlight, and staff made sure my daughter’s celiac needs were handled at every meal.

Whitney Bachrach Jul 2026

Our room had a lovely garden view and felt spacious, convenient and quiet. The concierge helped us book activities and dinners around the city, and the dining team made sure my daughter with celiac disease was safely fed at every single meal without us having to ask twice.

  • Reliable handling of dietary restrictions
  • Outdoor pond-side dining in summer

Strong endorsement

Catherine at the front office and Camila in food and beverage were the two people who made this stay feel personal.

Mateu Pinto Coelho Jun 2026

The decor here is gorgeous, and the outdoor garden with its traditional shrine creates a genuinely peaceful atmosphere that pulls you into Japanese culture rather than just showing it to you. The level of the property overall felt unmatched compared to other hotels I’ve stayed in.

  • Traditional shrine within the garden grounds

Strong endorsement

We’ve stayed 13 nights across three years and the omakase restaurant alone keeps bringing us back.

Roger Stone Jun 2026

My family and I keep returning because the staff is welcoming and genuinely helpful every time. The pond, shrine and koi fish add a lot for a young child during a stay, and the sushi restaurant is excellent. This is the highest recommendation I can give a hotel.

  • Strong sushi omakase restaurant
  • Good for repeat family visits

My kids loved feeding the koi and ducks, and the staff had no complaints worth mentioning across our two rooms.

lindsayhF8201AG Jun 2026

We had a large suite and a regular room for three nights, and both were spacious and comfortable. The bamboo forest and monkey park are a far drive from here, so plan for that, but the geisha district is only about 10 minutes by car. Breakfast was good, especially if you can grab a table outside.

  • Spacious rooms across categories
  • Close to the geisha district
  • Bamboo forest and monkey park are a long drive

The staff made my wife’s birthday and our honeymoon feel properly celebrated, and the omakase dinner was a highlight of our whole Japan trip.

Luke Rutledge May 2026

We did the nine-hour sightseeing tour and an afternoon tea ceremony with a maiko through the hotel, both well worth it. We also had an omakase dinner at the sushi restaurant and a romantic dinner at Fuju, and everything exceeded what we expected going in.

  • Hotel-arranged tea ceremony with a maiko
  • Memorable omakase and Fuju dinners

Strong endorsement

Everyone who works there seemed genuinely concerned we’d have everything we needed, and that’s exactly what we got.

Ari Perkins May 2026

This hotel sits in a great location with luxurious rooms, a solid gym and a strong breakfast. What actually makes it special is how attentive the service is at every turn. The grounds and garden are gorgeous on top of all that.

  • Consistently attentive staff

This felt like a calm, carefully made hotel that sits apart from Kyoto’s tourist crush.

The Telegraph Travel Jan 2026

Everything about the interiors and the overall feel here struck me as elegant and deliberately calming, the kind of property that knows exactly what it is. It reads as a genuine retreat rather than another stop on a crowded sightseeing circuit.

  • Feels removed from Kyoto’s tourist crowds

The gardens and historic pond gave our whole stay a sense of calm, and the staff never made anything feel like too much trouble.

M Collingwood Aug 2026

We stayed as a family and felt looked after from arrival to departure. The rooms were excellent, breakfast was first class, and the location worked perfectly for exploring Kyoto on foot. It somehow delivers everything you’d expect from a top hotel while still feeling relaxed rather than stiff.

“Nothing ever felt like too much trouble” in their words

The concierge organized our entire week of day trips before we even landed, and our pond-view residence made coming back each night feel calming.

moniqueh597 Jun 2026

This is a perfect base for exploring Kyoto and the surrounding areas, and the concierge was incredibly helpful arranging tours before our trip even started. We stayed in a one-bedroom residence that came with a mini bar, ironing and transfers, great for our family. It is full of American tour groups at times, but it still felt like our home away from home in Japan.

  • Pre-trip concierge planning
  • Good residence-style rooms with transfers included
  • Can feel busy with tour groups

This was easily the highlight of our whole trip, and the toilets alone were the best we had anywhere in Japan.

Josh Bresler Apr 2026

The property feels tucked away and peaceful while still being close to everything, and the rooms were exactly what I hoped for: clean, modern, and comfortable. What stood out most was how staff and management took real time to get to know us, and it never felt forced. The pool was a big bonus for our family, and the food and drinks were excellent across the board with no weak spots.

  • Staff build a genuine rapport over the stay
  • No weak spots across food and drinks

Checking in wasn’t a problem and the onsen and steam room facilities were genuinely five-star.

timothy hutton Mar 2026

My wife, two kids and I arrived to find our room already prepared, right down to a sofa bed set up for the kids and two tanuki dolls waiting for them. Service here is hard to put into words, and the gym and pool matched that level too. Our room felt lovely and updated throughout.

  • Thoughtful prep for traveling families
  • Strong onsen and steam room facilities

Red flag

A lost bottle of engraved perfume left by the door turned into days of indifferent back-and-forth about shipping.

Jeremy Barker Oct 2025

Dinner on our first night meant an hour’s wait for a hamburger in an almost empty restaurant, and they still charged us for the appetizer we ate while waiting. The bigger issue came at checkout: we left an engraved perfume bottle by the front door and called as soon as we noticed from the train. They told us they only found the glasses, not the perfume, and showed little urgency chasing it down over several days of messages about shipping. The rooms themselves were nice and the location was fine, which made the rest so frustrating.

  • Rooms and location were fine
  • Lost item handled with little urgency
  • Slow restaurant service with an empty dining room

Strong endorsement

Traveling with our 15-month-old could have been stressful, but the team made it effortless from the moment we arrived.

Zachary Oasheim Oct 2025

The setting here is breathtaking: peaceful gardens, elegant interiors, and a real sense of calm that makes you forget you’re in a city at all. We’ve stayed at a lot of luxury hotels, but this one stood out for its warmth and sincerity rather than just polish. It’s the people here who made the stay unforgettable, not just the setting.

  • Staff handle traveling with infants well
  • Calm, garden-forward setting

About Four Seasons Hotel Kyoto

Four Seasons Hotel Kyoto sits on grounds that include a historic pond garden with a traditional shrine, set back from central Kyoto within walking distance of the Higashiyama district. On property there is a sushi restaurant serving omakase, a lounge overlooking the garden, and a buffet breakfast service. The spa and wellness area includes an indoor pool, sauna, steam rooms, and hot and cold plunge pools, along with a fitness center. The garden itself houses koi, turtles, ducks and seasonal wildlife, and the hotel periodically hosts traditional cultural programming, including maiko and koto performances and tea ceremonies. The location puts central Kyoto and the Higashiyama neighborhood within walking distance, with sites further afield, including the bamboo forest, reachable by car.
