First look

Four Seasons is coming back to Berlin after twenty years away, and it isn’t building new. It is taking over the Hotel de Rome on Bebelplatz in Mitte, a late-1800s building that was the Dresdner Bank’s headquarters before it became a hotel in 2006, on the square it shares with the Staatsoper. The hotel keeps trading as the Hotel de Rome through 2026 while the work goes on, and reopens as Four Seasons Hotel Berlin in late 2027.

Humbert & Poyet, the Paris studio, are redoing the whole interior: about 140 rooms and suites, three restaurants and bars, the rooftop terrace over the square and a spa set in the bank’s old jewel vault. The façade stays as it is. Christian Poda, who ran Four Seasons Hong Kong, is the general manager, and the owner is Gruppo Statuto, which already works with Four Seasons in Milan and Taormina.

We haven’t stayed in its new form. What we’ll be watching: whether the rooms feel like Four Seasons rather than a refreshed Hotel de Rome, and whether the vault spa is big enough to matter in a city hotel.

Before it opens

When does Four Seasons Hotel Berlin open?

Four Seasons expects to open it in late 2027, after a full renovation of the Hotel de Rome, which keeps operating under that name through 2026. No month has been announced.

Is Four Seasons Hotel Berlin the Hotel de Rome?

Yes. It is the same building on Bebelplatz in Mitte, the former Dresdner Bank headquarters, renovated by Humbert & Poyet into about 140 rooms and suites, three restaurants and bars, a rooftop terrace and a spa in the old jewel vault.
