The service is the standout: staff imported from Four Seasons properties worldwide, deeply personalized touches — guests greeted by name in their preferred language, sommeliers offering off-menu pours they think you'd enjoy, elaborate birthday gestures that reportedly made grown adults cry at checkout. Shima, the Japanese-Peruvian restaurant, is legitimately exceptional and would hold its own in any major city. The tradeoff is one of the most polarizing locations in luxury travel: the Formentor peninsula is spectacular, but the single access road — choked with tour buses and packs of cyclists — makes leaving a genuine ordeal, and with only two dinner venues, longer stays risk monotony. Come for four nights or fewer, or plan your itinerary around the hotel boat to Port Pollença, and this becomes one of the Mediterranean's finest resort experiences.

The service, under GM Thomas Moons, has demonstrably improved in the most recent cycle — complimentary olive grove hikes, sunset cruises to hidden lagoons, poolside vitamin C mist and almond service, and an almost telepathic attention to special occasions — though consistency remains somewhat room-dependent, and a handful of guests report being made to feel unwelcome, which is the hotel's most serious unresolved problem. The hard product is the honest caveat: base-category rooms are genuinely dated — dark wood, aging bathrooms, middling technology — and in August the air conditioning has repeatedly failed to keep pace with temperatures, a recurring complaint across multiple years and sources; a renovation is reportedly imminent. Book a junior suite or above, visit in May, June, or September, and La Residencia delivers an experience difficult to replicate anywhere else on the island.

Where Cap Rocat frustrates is in its inconsistency: standard suites can feel damp and cave-like, breakfast underwhelms relative to the price, and the hotel's management responses to health and billing complaints have been notably poor. Book the right room — specifically one of the cliff-edge Sentinel or Suite del Mar categories — and you'll understand why it lands on every serious Mallorca shortlist; book a standard interior suite and you may feel overcharged.
