Overall

Overall: Belmond Hotel Caruso 18 out of 20, Le Barthélemy Hotel & Spa Score pending.

Service Why

Service: Belmond Hotel Caruso 18 out of 20, Le Barthélemy Hotel & Spa Not scored.

Le Barthélemy Hotel & Spa: Guests describe coffee orders remembered without asking and a cancelled flight rebooked within two hours, not just friendliness.

Rooms & Design Why

Rooms & Design: Belmond Hotel Caruso 18 out of 20, Le Barthélemy Hotel & Spa Not scored.

Belmond Hotel Caruso: The terraced gardens, the frescoed bar ceiling, and the infinity pool draw the most consistent praise, though a couple of reports flag a tired hotel bar.

Le Barthélemy Hotel & Spa: Rooms get called huge and well laid out, with Diptyque products and strong water pressure, though it’s a smaller property than nearby resorts.

Location Why

Location: Belmond Hotel Caruso 18.5 out of 20, Le Barthélemy Hotel & Spa Not scored.

Belmond Hotel Caruso: Perched 350 metres above the coast, it trades beach access for quiet gardens and terrace views, with a shuttle to Amalfi and a free boat to Positano covering the gap.

Le Barthélemy Hotel & Spa: Grand Cul-de-Sac puts guests steps from calm, enclosed water with sea turtles and stingrays right off the beach.

Dining Why

Dining: Belmond Hotel Caruso 17.5 out of 20, Le Barthélemy Hotel & Spa Not scored.

Belmond Hotel Caruso: Caruso Grill and the pasta and pizza classes get singled out repeatedly, with one guest ranking the food above Michelin places tried elsewhere on the same trip.

Le Barthélemy Hotel & Spa: The croissants and breakfast buffet draw repeat praise and Abyss restaurant delivers on seafood, though it isn’t positioned as a dining destination in itself.

Wellness Why

Wellness: Belmond Hotel Caruso 16.5 out of 20, Le Barthélemy Hotel & Spa Not scored.

Belmond Hotel Caruso: The pool and its views get called some of the best on the coast, but a mid-June visit found it crowded and wedding traffic can crowd the grounds on busy days.

Le Barthélemy Hotel & Spa: The spa gets mixed marks: the vitality pools and sauna impress some, while one guest found the treatment rooms cramped and the massage overpriced.

The verdicts

Belmond Hotel Caruso

Most people who write about the Caruso end up talking about the pool and then, almost despite themselves, about a specific person: Giovanni running the Grill, Donatella pulling off a wedding, Carmine at the bar with a gimlet that gets its own mention. That's the pattern here, not the marble or the frescoes. A fifty-plus room hotel running weddings most days of the summer still has front-desk and pool staff getting named by first name, which is a harder trick to pull off than it sounds.

Some real trade-offs are worth pricing in. A few guests found the mood more correct than warm outside of milestone occasions: one couple who eloped there said the front desk congratulated them on arrival, and then the day was never mentioned again over dinner. Weddings on property, sometimes daily in peak season, crowd the pool and pull staff attention elsewhere; one traveller described the pool as noticeably fuller in mid-June than they'd expected from the photos. The Belmond name buys nothing on its own either: one guest who loved Caruso came back with a rough account of La Residencia, hairs and stains left on the bed, staff distracted by weddings there too, which is exactly why this is a hotel you're booking, not a brand you're trusting. Opinion splits on food too. Plenty call the Grill the best meal of their Italy trip, but a few who'd also done Il San Pietro or Borgo Santandrea rated those higher on the plate itself.

None of that changes what happens most nights: a terrace view people keep calling the best on the coast, a pool that reads better in person than in photos, and a team that will spray and brush olive oil off a white shirt without being asked twice. Book it for the setting above Ravello and the people who run it, and treat wedding season as a scheduling question, not a reason to look elsewhere.

Le Barthélemy Hotel & Spa

A room here runs well into four figures a night, and what you get for it is a small, quiet property on Grand Cul-de-Sac where the staff seem to notice things before you mention them. Multiple guests describe a coffee order remembered on day two without being asked, birthday decorations appearing unprompted, a cancelled flight rebooked within hours. That kind of anticipatory service is the real case for booking, not the beach alone, though the beach does its share: the water is calm enough for small kids even when other parts of the island are getting hammered by swell, and you can swim out from the sand to watch sea turtles graze.

The spa is the one place the story wobbles. Most guests who used the sauna and plunge pools liked them, but at least one found the treatment rooms tight and the massage overpriced for what it was, more a add-on than a reason to visit. The food fares better, especially breakfast: the croissants get called out often enough to be worth planning around, and Abyss handles beachfront dinner well without trying to be a culinary event. None of this is Eden Rock-level drama or scale, and a couple of reviewers note boats anchored close to the swim area that dent the view slightly.

Book it for a romantic trip or a family week where you want the property itself to be the destination, not a base for restaurant-hopping. If you want a show-stopping wellness program, look elsewhere; if you want a staff that remembers your name and your coffee order by the second morning, this is hard to beat on the island.
