Most people who write about the Caruso end up talking about the pool and then, almost despite themselves, about a specific person: Giovanni running the Grill, Donatella pulling off a wedding, Carmine at the bar with a gimlet that gets its own mention. That's the pattern here, not the marble or the frescoes. A fifty-plus room hotel running weddings most days of the summer still has front-desk and pool staff getting named by first name, which is a harder trick to pull off than it sounds.

Some real trade-offs are worth pricing in. A few guests found the mood more correct than warm outside of milestone occasions: one couple who eloped there said the front desk congratulated them on arrival, and then the day was never mentioned again over dinner. Weddings on property, sometimes daily in peak season, crowd the pool and pull staff attention elsewhere; one traveller described the pool as noticeably fuller in mid-June than they'd expected from the photos. The Belmond name buys nothing on its own either: one guest who loved Caruso came back with a rough account of La Residencia, hairs and stains left on the bed, staff distracted by weddings there too, which is exactly why this is a hotel you're booking, not a brand you're trusting. Opinion splits on food too. Plenty call the Grill the best meal of their Italy trip, but a few who'd also done Il San Pietro or Borgo Santandrea rated those higher on the plate itself.

None of that changes what happens most nights: a terrace view people keep calling the best on the coast, a pool that reads better in person than in photos, and a team that will spray and brush olive oil off a white shirt without being asked twice. Book it for the setting above Ravello and the people who run it, and treat wedding season as a scheduling question, not a reason to look elsewhere.

The case for the Cipriani starts with the pool. It's the largest in Venice, set inside gardens people describe as immaculate, and it turns a city built entirely of stone and canals into somewhere you can actually spend a lazy afternoon. Add the private boat that gets you into San Marco in about ten minutes and back out again before the crowds peak, and you have a genuine strategy for doing Venice without Venice wearing you down. The breakfast terrace earns its reputation too, right down to the trained hawk that keeps pigeons off the tables while you eat.

The trade-offs are real and worth pricing in before you book. Restaurant costs run well ahead of what the food and service deliver, by more than one account, and the poolside restaurant in particular has drawn complaints about slow, inattentive waitstaff and a strict dress code enforced without much grace. One long-time family flagged a genuinely ugly encounter with the pool bar manager and event security that soured a tradition spanning three generations. Rooms have improved a great deal with the recent renovation, but at least one guest found the air conditioning couldn't keep up on a hot night, which is not a small thing at these prices. The new Dior spa, opened this year, is the freshest addition and by early accounts a legitimate reason to book, though it's too new for a real track record.

None of this cancels the pull of the place. This is for people who want a resort that happens to be in Venice rather than a city hotel with a view of it, and who'd rather deal with occasional restaurant friction than give up the pool, the gardens, and that boat ride. Couples and honeymooners get the most out of it; families with young kids may find Airelles or a quieter alternative fits better. Book it for the grounds, the pool, and that breakfast terrace.
