First look

Taj's safari ambitions in South Africa go beyond the single property already operating. Alongside the now-open Taj Bush Lodge in the Greater Kruger area, IHCL has flagged two further wilderness lodges, taking the eventual count to three. It is an early signal of intent to build a real safari presence rather than a one-off.

Names, sizes and opening dates for the second and third lodges have not been confirmed, so this is the most speculative of Taj's current pipeline. What we will be watching for is where exactly the new lodges land within the Greater Kruger reserves, how they differentiate from Taj Bush Lodge, and whether Taj can hold its own against South Africa's deep bench of established safari operators. We have not stayed, so this is anticipation, not a verdict.

You're paying for a building that cannot be replicated: an 18th-century pleasure palace floating on Lake Pichola, reachable only by boat, with rose petals and a ceremonial umbrella waiting on the jetty. That arrival is the reason this hotel exists on every bucket list, and the staff mostly deliver on the promise — guests write in constantly about Pradeep, Surendra, Kajal and a dozen others who remembered a birthday, tracked down cow's milk for a sick toddler at midnight, or walked a family through the actual Octopussy filming locations. The rooms are smaller than you'd expect at this rate, and more than one guest describes bathrooms that feel dated rather than deliberately old-world, with damp creeping in where the lake meets the building. Dining is the real trade-off: Neel Kamal's thalis land well, but Bhairo's fixed $150 menu with an unprompted $350 wine upsell reads as pure margin-extraction, and a few guests found the spice dialed down and the food merely fine for the price. A checkout dispute over a "regular guest" getting priority over a paying first-timer is the kind of thing that shouldn't happen at this level, and it did, recently. Book it for the setting and the service, not the rooms or the spa: if you want bigger suites and a private plunge pool, the Leela across the lake is the frequently-raised alternative. But nothing else in Udaipur gets you a 500-year-old palace to wander at night with a gin and tonic, and that's worth the smaller room.

The case for Boulders starts with land, not architecture: private traversing rights mean your vehicle isn't sharing a leopard sighting with three others from different lodges, and guests who've done multiple Sabi Sand properties name it first, ahead of the design. The suites do hang glass-fronted over the Sand River with heated plunge pools, and the animals come to you: elephants and buffalo drinking from the watering hole below the deck, a troop of monkeys once helping themselves to a guest's pool. That part isn't exaggerated. The service specifics are concrete rather than generic: a champagne bath drawn without being asked, a vehicle stripped of its doors for a photographer, a sommelier who remembered a couple's wine preferences a full year later. Guides get thanked by name, Matt and Collen among them. That's the norm, not the exception, though it isn't universal: one recent guest found the food weak and the guiding unremarkable, and another describes a manager pushing hard on a billing dispute that wasn't the guest's to settle. WiFi is genuinely unreliable, which matters if you're trying to work between drives. The wine cellar and boma dinners hold up as real highlights rather than filler. Book this with a guide request sorted in advance rather than leaving it to chance, and go in expecting the very rare off night rather than perfection start to finish. The traversing rights and the guiding are the reason to choose Boulders over its neighbors, and on a good week, nothing else in Sabi Sand touches it.

The pink Cape Dutch buildings and gardens under Table Mountain are what people picture, but the reason people keep coming back is afternoon tea. Sommeliers like Zodwa and Craig walk guests through more than 70 teas with real care, the kind of ritual worth planning a trip around. It's the single most consistent thing here, and few hotels sustain anything that well. Service ranges from thoughtful to careless. Michael checked in all week about a decaf tea order and fresh milk delivery; Wellington's personal tour set the tone for a whole stay. But a waitress during a rainstorm left guests to find their own shelter and rushed to present the bill instead, and the kitchen badly fumbled dietary requests at a 70th birthday dinner, serving eggs and chicken mayonnaise to guests who'd booked vegan. The pool deck's black marble side tables get hot enough in the Cape sun to blister skin on contact, which is a real hazard, not a quibble. Next to design-forward rivals like Ellerman House, the Nellie trades on old-world theatre rather than newer design. The rooms are elegant but not cutting-edge, closer to a grand dame than a design hotel. That's a fair trade for most people, and nobody who's had the tea or booked the single-table Chef's Table with sommelier Lazarus walks away unconvinced. Book it for the gardens, the history, and that tea service: nothing else in Cape Town comes close.

One&Only Cape Town

Almost every traveller who stays at One&Only Cape Town comes home naming a specific person: Menzi, who anticipated requests before they were asked, or Zaza, or Elton at the Vista Bar. One guest mentioned liking the spa's carrot cake in passing and had a whole one delivered to her room that evening. Another had a doctor in the room within thirty minutes of asking, at 10pm, prescription delivered by midnight. That's the level this hotel operates at, and the setting backs it up: right at the V&A Waterfront, walkable and safe, with Table Mountain filling the view from the lobby, the rooms and the pool deck. Nobu and ROOI both come up often and specifically, and breakfast gets mentioned almost as much as the staff do. Price it against what long-term Cape Town residents point out: you're paying international resort rates for something closer to a very good island resort than a distinctly Cape Town stay. One 2025 guest had construction starting at 7:30am despite being promised 10 — worth asking about directly before booking. A loyalty guest in 2026 also found the upgrade flexibility didn't match what the brand promises at its other properties, which matters if repeat recognition is the reason you're picking a One&Only over any other five-star in the city. Travellers wanting more local texture over polish tend to land at the Silo instead. None of that undercuts the case. The rooms are spacious and well kept, the pool and spa are well above what most hotels offer, and the staff solve problems, a dishwasher favor, a birthday, a bad night, without making you ask twice. Book this for the location, the pool and spa, and service that puts a name and a face on nearly every good thing that happens to you here.
