First look
Rosewood is opening in Hangzhou, the lakeside city south of Shanghai, with a roughly 140-room hotel in the Wangjiang New City district. Hangzhou’s mix of scenery and tech-driven growth makes it a logical addition to the brand’s growing China map, and at 140 rooms this sits at the more intimate end of its Chinese pipeline.
The date has slipped and now reads roughly 2026, so we’re hedging slightly on timing. (Worth noting an earlier factsheet typo rendered the city as ‘Huangzhou’; the correct name is Hangzhou.) The appeal of a smaller key-count is that it can lean into a sense of place rather than processing volume. What we’ll be watching for is whether the hotel taps the city’s lakeside character, and whether the 2026 target finally sticks after the delay.
What we’ll be watching
Whether Neri&Hu deliver on the promise of a hotel that reads as Hangzhou rather than generic China luxury. This is the studio’s first project with Rosewood, which is a real swing — the collaboration could produce something genuinely place-rooted, or it could result in two strong brands talking past each other.
Whether four dining outlets across 16 storeys at 140 keys actually draws a local Hangzhou crowd. The split — all-day bistro, a Chinese restaurant, a specialty bar, and a culinary-retail hybrid mixing flower shop with patisserie — is ambitious for a hotel this size; we’ll be watching whether the Chinese restaurant in particular has enough culinary conviction to compete in a city with serious food culture.
Whether the Wangjiang New City location works in practice. The district is designed for the future — tech campuses, a K11 Art Mall, subway access — but it’s not West Lake, and Hangzhou’s appeal for most visitors is that lakeside character. Guests staying here are making a bet that a new-build CBD is worth trading proximity to the scenery.
Whether 2026 actually holds. The project was announced in 2021 with a 2026 target, meaning five years in the pipeline — and the existing first-look already flags one slip. We’ll be watching for any further delay given how long this has been in the works.
