First look

Hyatt announced Park Hyatt Comporta on 25 August 2026, its first Park Hyatt in Portugal. It goes on the Alentejo coast about an hour south of Lisbon airport, beside the Troia Golf Course that Robert Trent Jones Sr. laid out, with four more courses within 20 minutes. The hotel itself is small: 58 rooms and suites, six two-bedroom villas and 22 serviced residences, developed with the Portuguese firm Coporgest.

Comporta made its name as the quiet end of the coast, rice fields and wooden beach shacks rather than resort strips, and it now has Six Senses and others heading the same way. Hyatt lists pools, a spa and gym, a padel court, a kids' club and several restaurants. No architect or designer has been named yet.

We haven't stayed, and nobody will before 2029. What we'll be watching: whether 58 keys feel like a Park Hyatt or like the clubhouse for the 80 villas and apartments Coporgest is building alongside it.

Most Maldives resorts sell you the same postcard. Hadahaa is the one where the reef is right off the jetty, not a boat ride away, and the reviews back that up with unusual consistency: turtles, blacktip sharks under the villa bridges, manta rays, once even a family of dolphins. It's remote even by Maldivian standards, a domestic flight to Kooddoo plus a short speedboat, which is exactly why the island feels undisturbed rather than managed. The service is the reason people come back a third and ninth time, and it shows in specifics rather than adjectives: a host who upgraded a couple to a water villa after a noisy first night, a general manager who sits and talks with guests rather than just checking in, a bottle of Malbec that appeared because a server noticed what someone was drinking. That said, the villas are showing their age on a few 2026 stays, and the dining plans nickel-and-dime you on drinks and extras (a $20 coconut got called out more than once). One spa complaint about a manager's conduct and one guest's account of a maintenance issue that killed their ability to swim for a whole stay are worth knowing about, even if they read as exceptions against a huge volume of praise for the same team. Book it for the house reef and the kind of staff who remember your name and your drink order without being told twice. Skip it if you want a big-lounge, big-crowd resort energy: Hadahaa is small, quiet, and works precisely because it isn't trying to be anything else.

Steps from Place Vendôme, this is the anti-Ritz: modern, quiet, deliberately unshowy in a neighborhood built on gilt and marble. Traveller after traveller, first-timers and Globalists on their fourth or fifth stay alike, land on the same point: the staff is why people keep coming back. One guest's concierge called five different wine shops to track down a specific bottle; another had a Disneyland transfer arranged for a kid's birthday; duty managers like Lisa and Mouhcine get remembered by name months later, though at least one recent Globalist had the opposite experience at check-in, so it isn't universal. The breakfast buffet draws the same praise on repeat, often called among the best in the city even by guests who found little else memorable. What's harder to defend is what you're paying for the room itself. Cash rates run $1,000-$2,000+ a night, and at that level the TVs tucked behind mirrored panels, furnishings some guests call 1980s-vintage, and a small spa (the hot tub has gone out of service without guests being told) start to feel thin against newer competition. The recently renovated Hôtel du Louvre keeps coming up as the points-and-cash comparison worth checking, though it doesn't match the room size here. Dining is uneven too: the restaurant has held a Michelin star, but service has drawn real complaints about long waits and inattentiveness, and a basic cocktail near €34 doesn't always match what lands on the table. This is a points hotel first, a cash hotel second. On a Hyatt redemption or a Globalist rate, breakfast alone and that concierge desk make it one of the strongest plays in Paris; the room's shortcomings barely register against the value. At full rack rate, you're paying palace money for a building that's starting to show its age. Book it for the location and the people who run it.

Since the December 2025 reopening, the case for booking hasn't really moved: the same oversized rooms Tokyo has always been short on, a spa floor with Fuji views that people keep calling the best in the city, and a breakfast at Girandole (the Japanese set over the Western, specifically) that guests describe as among the finest hotel meals they've had anywhere. The New York Bar and Grill still gets called one of the city's great rooms to sit in. Book it for Girandole, the spa floor, and the New York Bar — that part of the trip is not in question. The renovated rooms are the one place the reviews disagree with the reputation: several 2026 stays call them "beige," comfortable but generic enough to pass for a good business hotel, at money that buys sharper design elsewhere in the city like Bulgari Tokyo. Service is the harder problem, because it isn't a matter of taste. One guest this year had pre-arrival emails go unanswered and no turndown across four nights, with amenities never restocked. Another in the same window was upgraded, greeted warmly, and remembered by name at breakfast. Both stays happened weeks apart at the same hotel, which is really the whole story: you can't predict which one you'll get. Shinjuku's shuttle-to-station setup still throws first-timers, and a couple of guests doing repeat Tokyo trips said they'd pick Roppongi or Toranomon for a pure relaxation stay instead. None of that touches what's upstairs. If service consistency matters more to you than the room and the breakfast, price that in before you book — otherwise this is still worth the rate for what's on the top floors.

The Ritz Lisbon has been the Lisbon address for decades, and what you're paying for shows up fastest at breakfast: live cooking stations at the Sunday spread, dairy-free desserts arranged on request, a buffet several guests call the best hotel breakfast they've had anywhere. The rooms hold up too — recently renovated ones facing the park have private balconies, deep soaking tubs, twin sinks, and beds guests specifically credit for the best sleep they've had in years. The rooftop is its own reason to book: an 18-metre pool, a gym with pilates reformers and real daylight, and a sauna setup one traveller compared to a proper Greek bathhouse rather than a hotel add-on. The trade-offs are real and worth pricing in before you book. The building itself is a plain concrete block from the outside, and it sits a genuine walk or a short Uber ride from the old town and the river, not in the middle of the tourist center. Breakfast service has drawn specific, recent complaints about disorganized seating and guests waiting at the door while tables sit empty, and at least one stay was disrupted by unannounced renovation noise starting early on a weekday morning. A thermostat that needed resetting multiple times during one stay, and a lost phone charger that staff couldn't locate, are the kind of small operational misses that shouldn't happen at these rates, though they read as inconsistent rather than typical. Book it for the rooftop pool, the Sunday brunch, and rooms that several long-time Four Seasons guests rank among the brand's best in Europe. Families do well here too, with staff repeatedly credited for making kids feel genuinely welcome. If you want to fall out of bed onto cobblestones in Chiado, stay somewhere else; if you want a quiet, well-run base a short ride from everything, this is still the one.
