Mandarin Oriental
Mandarin Oriental Winter Palace, Luxor
Full restoration of Luxor's historic Winter Palace into a Mandarin Oriental
First look
The Winter Palace in Luxor is closing in early 2026 for a full restoration and is set to reopen as a Mandarin Oriental in July 2027, announced in February 2026. This is a restoration project rather than a new build, taking one of Luxor's most recognizable historic hotels and bringing it under Mandarin Oriental.
The appeal here is the building and its setting; the question is how a top-to-bottom restoration balances the history with what Mandarin Oriental wants the place to be. We can't judge any of that from a closure notice and a target date. What we'll be watching for is the state of the restored property when it reopens and whether the July 2027 timeline holds. We haven't stayed, so this is anticipation, not a verdict.
Not yet scored. We publish a Fat Score only once a hotel is open and real guests have stayed and written about it — this is a first look, not a verdict.
