The honest review of Mandarin Oriental, Costa Navarino

The verdict

A Pool Villa here runs from roughly €1,000 a night in shoulder season to double that in August, and what arrives for it is some of the best-built rooms in Greece: stone and wood finishes, private plunge pools even at the entry level, and a site plan low enough that nothing competes with the view of Navarino Bay. Several guests who’ve toured both the villas and the Junior Suites actually prefer the suites’ layout, which says more about how well this place is designed than any one room category could.

Getting here is a real cost, not a footnote: Kalamata airport runs a handful of flights a week, and the alternative is a four-hour drive from Athens. The building and the setting don’t waver, but the floor does: breakfast is the most consistently excellent meal on property, yet more than one guest describes coffee refills that take ten minutes and food arriving after the plates are cleared. One family was told they’d have to pay for a room upgrade on a quiet week and left feeling like an afterthought; another had a mistaken transport booking that management wouldn’t make right. None of that touches the honeymoon-anniversary crowd’s experience, where staff remembered dietary restrictions down to the allergy and sent a cake and balloons on hearing a couple was expecting.

Go for a week, not three days: this is a resort built for settling in, with olive harvesting, golf, and boat trips to fill the time between pool days. Book it for the rooms and the breakfast, and go in May or October if the crowds and the heat both worry you.

Where the score comes from

Each out of 20. The tick on every bar is where the collection starts.

Service 16/20

Most people are met by name and remembered by staff like Alexia and Katarina, but several say the floor runs thin and unevenly trained at peak season.

Rooms & Design 18.5/20

Rooms get called architecture-magazine quality, with stone and wood finishes and private pools even in entry-level categories.

Location 14/20

The Messinian coastline is widely called beautiful, but Kalamata’s limited flights and the long Athens drive are a repeated complaint.

Dining 16.5/20

Breakfast at Olivera is frequently singled out as excellent, though multiple guests report slow or incomplete food and drink service at the restaurants and pool.

Wellness 16.5/20

Strengths

  • Pool Villas and Junior Suites both finished to an architecture-magazine standard, with private plunge pools at the entry level
  • Breakfast at Olivera is repeatedly called among the best guests have had anywhere
  • Staff remember names, dietary restrictions and personal milestones without being asked twice
  • Spa facilities including cold plunge and sauna are a genuine draw, not an afterthought
  • Low-rise design integrates into the coastline so the sea view is rarely blocked

Trade-offs

  • Getting there costs real time: limited Kalamata flights or a four-hour drive from Athens
  • Breakfast and pool service can be slow and disorganized, especially during peak season
  • A few guests report being made to feel like an afterthought when something went wrong with a booking or upgrade
  • August occupancy makes spa treatments and quiet pool time hard to come by

Strong endorsement

My welcome was so personal it felt staged at first, and then it just felt like being among friends.

Dec 2025

I was greeted by five staff members including a manager within minutes of arriving, all using my name already. The tour of the property introduced me to staff at every stop, and by lunch my order had already been passed to the waiter before I even asked. I also stayed in an entry-level Bay View Junior Suite that beat every villa I toured for privacy and view.

“my room had 100% privacy from every angle and a beautiful sea view” in their words
  • Personalized welcome and property tour
  • Entry-level suite had excellent privacy and view
  • Getting to Kalamata airport is inconvenient

Enrico and the GM made this feel personal, but August was so full I couldn’t even get a spa slot.

Crayolalife Aug 2026

The property felt peaceful and natural rather than commercial, and the food was genuinely good throughout. Enrico went out of his way to make our stay special, and our housekeeper Kismeta was warm from the heart. It was packed in August though, pricing felt high for what we got, and the cold plunge was the one facility I kept coming back to.

  • Cold plunge pool
  • Attentive buggy and bike service
  • Nearly impossible to book spa in August
  • High prices felt steep

Mixed read

Breakfast at Olivera was outstanding, but the service at the pool and restaurants didn’t match what I was paying.

Taylor Novak Jun 2026

George and his team at Brasserie by the Bay ran a tight dinner on arrival night, but other outlets had staff who didn’t seem to know their own menus or where they needed to be. There was no sparkling wine at breakfast, which felt like a miss at this price point, even the Conrad in Athens offers it. We asked about a room upgrade at check-in and were told we’d have to pay, which stung on an anniversary trip, and getting a bill at the pool took three requests.

  • Breakfast spread at Olivera excellent
  • Spa and gym facilities strong
  • Staff inconsistent on menu knowledge
  • Slow service at pool and bar

The setting overlooking Navarino Bay is spectacular, but breakfast service dragged badly most mornings.

Go63350430157 Jun 2026

This is a genuinely beautiful property with contemporary design and high-end finishes, and the staff I dealt with were well trained and friendly. Breakfast was a different story: getting a coffee refill meant one staff member sending another with an iPad and then a ten-minute wait, and toast required several requests. Even with that, I’d still call it one of the best hotels in Greece.

“this is one of the best hotels in Greece and Europe as a whole” in their words
  • Striking bay-front setting
  • High-end finishes throughout
  • Breakfast service slow and disorganized

The rooms and breakfast were excellent, but the beach itself disappointed me and the evenings felt flat.

Ekaterina Nurtaeva May 2026

The design of the rooms is genuinely top-notch, spacious and modern, and breakfast was outstanding every day. Even in late July the mornings felt cool and the spa pool was too cold in the wind. I noticed staff gave noticeably more attention to the celebrities staying alongside us, and since the sea itself wasn’t that beautiful, I ended up spending nearly all my time at the pool instead.

  • Spacious, stylish rooms
  • Outstanding breakfast
  • Sea and beach underwhelming
  • Evenings lacking atmosphere

My first non-city Mandarin Oriental and the sunsets alone made the trip worth it.

Parinthorn Saithong Apr 2026

Arrival and check-in were smooth, and I got a nice unprompted room upgrade. Anna in the gym and spa was attentive every single session, and the cocktail collaboration with Line was a genuine highlight at the bar. I split my evenings between Oliviera and Three Admirals Lounge over four nights and loved both.

  • Smooth check-in and arrival
  • Memorable sunset cocktails

Red flag

We had a genuinely bad experience when a transport mix-up for a family tennis lesson was never made right.

Jayne Harper Nov 2025

The hotel failed to arrange transport for a booked tennis lesson, which was their own mistake, and then refused to reimburse us for it. Food was average at best, and the staff seemed to be going through the motions, visibly frustrated with each other in front of guests. It left us feeling like the standard here has slipped.

  • Booking error not resolved by management
  • Staff morale visibly low

Staff found out we were expecting and sent gifts for the baby on top of a birthday cake they’d already arranged.

Mattia Rocchi Nov 2025

It’s a bit of a trek to get here, but the villas and golf courses surrounded by greenery and sea more than make up for it. For my birthday they delivered a cake, a card and balloons without being asked, and when they learned my partner and I were expecting they sent baby gadgets and more balloons. We tried every restaurant on property and each one was better than the last.

  • Thoughtful personal touches for celebrations
  • Strong restaurant variety
  • Somewhat inconvenient to reach

This place feels like a hidden sanctuary carved into the coastline, and the breakfast alone is worth going back for.

Brittany Borish Oct 2025

Everything here is designed to enhance the Messinian coastline rather than compete with it, and every direction I looked was genuinely postcard-worthy. The room felt like it belonged in an architecture magazine, with stone and wood finishes and a private terrace and pool that quieted my mind. Breakfast was the best I’ve had anywhere, with homemade Greek yogurt, fresh-baked bread, and fruit that tasted freshly picked, and Vassillis and Anna made every morning feel like a welcome home.

“if you’re thinking about going, stop thinking. Just go” in their words
  • Design blends seamlessly with the coastline
  • Exceptional breakfast spread

This was our second stay and the villa with its own pool sold us completely on coming back.

ARMEN TOUNIAN Oct 2025

Everything in the room was top quality, tastefully decorated, and extremely comfortable both inside and out. Standing on our patio looking at the sea and the greenery genuinely felt like being in paradise. Natalia, Sirjana and Jibril in housekeeping, Beata at breakfast, and the whole concierge and reservation team made the whole family feel looked after.

  • Private pool villa with sea views
  • Housekeeping and front-desk team attentive

Traveling with two kids, the kids club was such a hit mine asked to go back every single day.

Phillip Mayer Sep 2025

The sunset from our room over the sea was consistently stunning, and the design throughout felt genuinely well curated. Fresh seafood comes in daily from local fishermen, and the executive chef invited us to see the catch before it showed up on our plates that evening. The resort sits inside one of Greece’s best golf settings, and the team arranged every excursion without a hitch.

  • Kids club genuinely engaging for children
  • Daily fresh seafood from local fishermen

About Mandarin Oriental, Costa Navarino

Mandarin Oriental, Costa Navarino sits on the Messinian coast of the Peloponnese, within the larger Costa Navarino development near Pylos in southwestern Greece. The resort opened in late 2023 and is built low to the landscape, with Junior Suites in the main building and standalone Pool Villas spread across the grounds, connected by footpaths, buggies and e-bikes. Rooms are finished in stone and wood, and most categories look out over either the sea or the adjoining golf course.

On property, guests have access to multiple restaurants and bars including Olivera for breakfast, Brasserie by the Bay, and Three Admirals Lounge for evening cocktails, along with a beach club. The spa includes a cold plunge, sauna and steam facilities, and there is a gym with Keiser equipment. The location puts golf courses, a private beach, and the wider Costa Navarino development within reach, including shuttle access to the resort’s sister hotels and their shopping agoras, plus nearby ruins and villages in the Messinia region.

What fat travellers ask

Is Mandarin Oriental, Costa Navarino worth it?

At shoulder-season rates starting around €1,000 a night, yes: the rooms and breakfast consistently outperform the price. In peak August, when rates roughly double and service visibly stretches thinner, it’s a harder case.

How does Mandarin Oriental, Costa Navarino compare to nearby alternatives?

It sits alongside sister properties The Romanos and the W within the same Costa Navarino development, with shuttle access between them, and travelers weighing mainland Greece against the islands often compare it to Amanzoe for a quieter, golf-and-wellness-focused stay.

Who is Mandarin Oriental, Costa Navarino best for?

Couples and families planning to settle in for five nights or more, who want a design-forward resort built around golf, spa and a slower pace rather than nightlife or a classic swimmable beach.

Is the beach at Mandarin Oriental, Costa Navarino worth prioritizing?

Some guests find the sea itself underwhelming compared to the pool areas, with calmer but less scenic water than islands like Santorini or Mykonos offer, so it’s better suited to travelers prioritizing the resort experience over beach time.

How do I book Mandarin Oriental, Costa Navarino?

Two routes, and both end with the reservation sitting at the hotel in your name. Direct on the hotel’s own site is the fastest — the Reserve button on this page goes straight to it. The other is through a travel advisor with consortia access: you pay the same rate the hotel is charging publicly, the hotel pays the advisor’s commission instead of you, and an amenity package comes attached — full breakfast for two daily, even on room-only rates — restaurant or in your room, $100 food & beverage or spa credit per stay — on suites, $100 of each, personalised welcome amenity and a note from the hotel’s leadership, room upgrade to the next category, subject to availability, early check-in and late check-out, subject to availability. We handle that side ourselves for readers who ask.

What is the smartest way to book Mandarin Oriental, Costa Navarino?

Through a travel advisor with consortia access, for almost everyone. You pay the hotel’s own public rate and an amenity package comes on top that direct booking doesn’t include — typically full breakfast for two daily, even on room-only rates — restaurant or in your room, $100 food & beverage or spa credit per stay — on suites, $100 of each, personalised welcome amenity and a note from the hotel’s leadership, room upgrade to the next category, subject to availability, early check-in and late check-out, subject to availability. It costs nothing extra, because the hotel pays the commission rather than you. The one real exception is brand loyalty: advisor rates don’t always earn nights toward status, so if you’re chasing a tier or points, book direct. Short of that, there’s no version of booking direct that leaves you better off. We’re advisors ourselves, so you can just ask us.

Can I get a free room upgrade at Mandarin Oriental, Costa Navarino?

Never guaranteed — it depends on what’s still unsold the day you arrive, and anyone promising one is guessing. Two things move the odds. The reliable one is booking through a consortia programme, where a room upgrade is written into the amenity package subject to availability; it costs nothing extra and it is the closest thing to a lever that exists. The other is telling the hotel in advance that you’re celebrating something, which works more often than people expect. The first part is already handled if you book it with us.

Most weeks, we leave you alone.
