A room here runs somewhere north of $1,000 a night, and what you get for it is one of the best addresses in Manhattan: directly over Columbus Circle, a subway entrance downstairs, Central Park across the street, and a Whole Foods in the building so you never have to go outside for basics. Rooms facing the park or the Hudson get singled out again and again as the reason to book, and the 35th-floor lobby with its Chihuly glass sets a tone most guests say the rest of the hotel actually lives up to. The staff turn up by name in a way that’s hard to ignore: a concierge named Michael kept a family updated through a flight diversion and had wine and a suite upgrade waiting when they finally landed at 1:30am the next day, and a manager comped a tea service after construction noise from a neighboring room disrupted a guest’s morning.
Not everything holds at the same standard. One family found their two rooms treated unevenly, one got a fridge in an hour and a half after three calls, one had a lingering odor and a stained carpet that nobody addressed. Afternoon tea is the most consistent soft spot: portions are on the small side for $135 to $185 a person, and more than one guest walked away thinking it didn’t match what they’d had in London or Dubai. A returning Mandarin Oriental guest also flagged a check-in that felt more like an upsell pitch than a welcome, which cuts against the brand’s own reputation for remembering returning faces.
None of that changes who this is for. Families get a genuinely kid-friendly welcome (stuffed animals, a robe sized for a toddler), couples get a spa that’s worth booking ahead for, and anyone who wants to walk into Central Park without touching a taxi has found their hotel. Skip the afternoon tea and book it for the view, the location, and a staff that keeps making the small moments count.

The dining room decor was simple, not the ornate setting I was expecting, and the desserts could have been better even though the sandwiches and scones were delicious. Christopher waited on us and shared background stories about the teas we picked, which made the whole thing feel more special. The decor is genuinely pleasing and everyone is soft spoken in a way that puts you at ease. Miles arranged everything I needed before I even arrived, even though he wasn’t there during my actual stay, and John at the restaurant made me feel catered to like I was in my own dining room. My father’s room got a Bose radio and a tower of pastries, ours got two small cookies, one of them broken. There was a lingering odor in our room and a stain on the carpet by the bathroom that nobody addressed. It took a day and a half and three calls to get a mini fridge my father received right away, and turndown service skipped a night.
