A Junior Temple Suite here sits steps from Kennin-ji’s gate, inside Gion’s geiko district, the kind of address competing with what a Park Hyatt or Six Senses room offers across town, with a nightly kimono and maiko performance in the lobby that turns into genuine theatre at 4:45pm. One family’s custom kosher menu arrived as a finished PDF weeks before check-in, then printed as a table card on the night. Another guest with a dashi allergy got a handwritten note from housekeeping explaining they’d reworked the recipe rather than just swapping it out.
The rooms and communal spaces are the strongest argument for booking: spacious bedrooms, a superking bed people call genuinely comfortable, a large wetroom bathtub with real water pressure. The bathroom sink is cramped and badly lit for two people getting ready together, and long-stay guests will run out of wardrobe space. In-room dining is the weak point — a thin menu, inconsistent kitchen execution, and no flexibility for off-menu requests the way some rivals offer. There’s no pool, and the spa is functional rather than a draw. One guest’s upgrade as a top-tier loyalty member got stonewalled with vague terms, while unrelated complaints to the general manager went unanswered for days.
None of that makes it a hard pass. It makes it a hotel where the location and the design carry the price more than the food or the extras do, and the newness still shows in a few rough edges around service depth rather than warmth. Book it for the rooms and the location inside old Kyoto, and plan your dinners elsewhere in a city full of options.
The five scores
Collection floor
Service14.5/20
Front-of-house and restaurant staff get singled out by name for going well beyond the brief, but upgrade and email handling for loyalty members has drawn real complaints.
Rooms & Design17.5/20
The lobby, communal spaces and Junior Temple Suite rooms get consistent praise, though the bathroom sink area and wardrobe space are cramped for longer stays.
Location18/20
Sitting inside Gion steps from Kennin-ji and the geiko theatre is the single most repeated reason people book, even from guests who find the district touristy.
Dining13/20
Lanterne’s breakfast and custom-menu handling impress, but in-room dining is thin, inconsistent, and won’t bring up delivery food from the curb.
Wellness12/20
There’s a spa and gym guests call simple but adequate, and no pool, which puts it behind rivals at the same price.
Strengths
Location inside Gion puts you walking distance from Kennin-ji and the historic district
Rooms and communal spaces get consistently praised for design and comfort
Restaurant team goes well beyond the norm on dietary customization and advance planning
Nightly maiko performance and cultural programming are a genuine draw, especially for families
Trade-offs
In-room dining is limited and inconsistent in quality
No swimming pool, and the spa is basic rather than a destination
Loyalty program upgrades and general manager responsiveness have drawn real complaints
Bathroom sink area is cramped with poor lighting, and wardrobe space is tight for longer stays
Between the usual suspects in Kyoto, Capella is where I’d send someone, though a family-run ryokan like Shiraume is worth considering for something different.
My clients really enjoyed their stay, especially the rooms and the food.

The location is a bit touristy, similar in vibe to Park Hyatt’s area if you’re familiar with that. Hotel Mitsui is worth considering as another option in the same city.
Amazing room, views, and common areas, but the service had some teething problems and the food was mediocre, not bad.
May 2026
The physical spaces impressed me the most during my stay. Service had some rough patches that felt like early-days teething issues, and the food was fine without being memorable.
This is one of the best hotels I’ve ever stayed at, and I don’t say that lightly.

I don’t usually go out of my way to leave hotel reviews, but every single staff member we met here was warm and genuinely thoughtful. The housekeeping team’s attention to detail stood out more than anywhere else I can remember staying. I’d come back without hesitation.
This stay exceeded all my expectations, and the genuine hospitality is what stayed with me most.

Every staff member I met was kind and ready to help from the first moment. The room was spotless and beautifully designed, and the food was excellent throughout my stay. What I appreciated most was how cared for I felt even when nobody was visibly around.
The rooms really are beautiful, and the lobby comes alive at the evening cultural event.

The entrance and lobby are genuinely striking, and the 4:45pm cultural performance turns the space into a kind of mini theatre, calm after a day of sightseeing. From what I remember this ran about a third less than Aman, though Uber costs would have added up there too.
The restaurant team bent over backwards for our kosher requirements, but the rest of the hotel didn’t match that standard, and I’m still not sure the price was worth it.

We booked a Junior Temple Suite expecting a true suite, and it turned out to be barely bigger than a standard room. Kim turned a rough first two days around and the restaurant staff treated our dietary needs with real respect, even arranging an escort to the train station when we left. As a top-tier loyalty member, though, I was told the hotel was full while paid upgrades to higher categories still seemed available, and the general manager never properly replied to my emails. Friends paid far less at a Hilton in Kyoto and said their stay was excellent, which made me question the value here.
Restaurant staff accommodated dietary needs with care
This is an excellent smaller luxury hotel in a location you really can’t beat if you want to be inside old Kyoto.

Everything about the design felt considered, and given how new the property is, that’s impressive. Check-in with Yuko was warm and elegant, and Malinee made breakfast at Lanterne a highlight every morning. The bar program at Yoi was genuinely fun thanks to Mario and both Bens, though the concierge team, while responsive, felt a little thin on local knowledge, likely a byproduct of being so new. My daughter said dressing in a kimono and meeting the maiko was the best part of our whole trip. The bathroom lighting is dim, which suits the aesthetic but makes getting ready harder than it should be.
What stood out most was how far the team went to handle a dietary restriction, weeks before we even arrived.

We were upgraded to a Junior Suite looking straight at the entrance to Kennin-ji, and the room was full of small touches rooted in local craft. The restaurant team worked out a fully customized menu for my travel companion’s allergy weeks in advance and sent us the finalized version before we even checked in. When a turndown tea accidentally contained an allergen, housekeeping swapped it immediately, then left a handwritten note the next night explaining how they’d reworked the recipe. The guided property tour covering the art and the hotel’s relationship with the surrounding community was genuinely worth doing, and staff remembered our faces from day one.

Capella Kyoto sits in Gion, Kyoto’s historic geisha district, positioned between Kennin-ji, the city’s oldest Zen Buddhist temple, and a traditional theatre that hosts geiko and maiko dance performances. The hotel is a newer addition to the Capella brand’s portfolio, built as a smaller-scale luxury property with fewer than 100 rooms, and sits within walking distance of the surrounding historic streets and temple grounds.
On property, the Lanterne restaurant serves breakfast and offers advance customization for dietary needs, while Yoi operates as the hotel’s bar. There is a spa and a gym, though no swimming pool. Guided property tours cover the art collection and the hotel’s relationship with the surrounding hanamachi community, and evening programming includes maiko performances with local musicians. The location puts Kyoto’s old town, temple district and central train station within a short walk or drive.
What fat travellers ask
Is Capella Kyoto worth it?
It depends what you’re paying for. The location inside Gion and the room design justify a premium for many guests, but if you’re expecting Aman-level in-room dining and amenities at this price, several guests have come away feeling shortchanged.
What room category should I book at Capella Kyoto?
Guests who booked Junior Suites found them close in size to standard rooms and recommend saving the upgrade spend for one of the top two suite categories if a true suite experience matters to you.
Does Capella Kyoto have a pool?
No. There’s a spa and a gym on property, but no swimming pool, which puts it behind some competitors in the same price range.
Is Capella Kyoto good for families?
The evening maiko performance and kimono dress-up programming have been highlighted as a standout experience for children, with one family calling it the highlight of their child’s trip.
How many Michelin Keys does Capella Kyoto have?
Capella Kyoto holds Two Michelin Keys in the Michelin Guide’s 2026 hotel selection, announced in September 2026. Two Keys is the second of the guide’s three hotel distinctions, given for what it calls an exceptional stay. The Keys come from the guide’s own anonymous inspections and are separate from the Fat Score: Fat Voyage rates it Fat Approved, 15 out of 20.
How does Capella Kyoto compare to Aman Kyoto?
Capella Kyoto is rated Fat Approved at 15/20 on Fat Voyage; Aman Kyoto is rated Fat Favorite at 16.5/20. The side-by-side comparison shows where each one leads.
How do I book Capella Kyoto?
Directly with the hotel. The Reserve button on this page takes you there, and the reservation is made with the hotel, in your name.
What is the smartest way to book Capella Kyoto?
Directly with the hotel is the simplest: the reservation is then the hotel’s own, so a change of dates or a request for a particular room goes straight to the people who run it.
Can I get a free room upgrade at Capella Kyoto?
Not something anyone can promise: it depends on what’s still unsold the day you arrive. Telling the hotel in advance that you’re celebrating something is worth doing.
You’ll get the new hotels and the openings worth booking early, plus longer reads, like which room to ask for or whether a famous name still deserves the trip.
