First look

Six Senses is bringing its wellness-first formula to Milan for the first time, and it's planting it in Brera — the city's gallery district, on Via Brera directly opposite the Pinacoteca. That siting is the whole pitch: a brand built around spas and slow living dropping into one of Milan's most walkable, design-heavy quarters rather than a quiet resort setting.

On paper it's a compact 69-key property — 53 rooms and 16 suites, two of them with private plunge pools — with interiors by Tara Bernerd & Partners leaning on arabescato marble, antique brass and smoked glass. The draw for us is the urban Six Senses Spa: a 15-metre pool, saunas, steam room and cold plunge, plus a hidden courtyard and a rooftop bar.

What we'll be watching for is whether the wellness program reads as genuine here or as a city-hotel veneer, and how 69 keys handle a pool-heavy spa floor. We haven't stayed — we'll find out when we visit after it opens.

Whether the wellness program survives the city. Six Senses Rome showed the brand can work in an urban palazzo, but Milan is a different pitch — fashion week, business travelers, weekenders who want a glass of Barolo and a good bed. We'll be watching whether the spa floor (15-metre pool, cold plunge, longevity programming) actually gets used the way it would at a resort, or ends up as a checkbox for guests who came for the Pinacoteca and the shops.
Whether Tara Bernerd's interiors hold up to scrutiny. Her work tends toward polished cosmopolitan warm — arabescato marble, antique brass, smoked glass — which is a credible register for Brera but not a distinctive one. We'll be watching whether the rooms feel specifically Milanese or could be anywhere the brand has planted a flag.
Whether 69 keys is the right count for a pool-heavy spa floor. Two suites with private plunge pools, a 41-foot terrace pool, and a 15-metre indoor pool is a significant water-to-room ratio for a property this size. At full occupancy in shoulder season that either reads as generosity or queues. We'll find out when real guests start reporting.
Whether the opening actually lands in 2026. This one already slipped a year — originally announced for 2025 before pushing to late 2026. Given the track record, we'd treat any date as provisional until keys are in hands.

What you're paying for is the spa and the address, and both hold up. The two-floor Roman Baths (sauna, steam room, three plunge pools at distinct temperatures) is the best wellness setup in the city by most accounts, and the palace sits on Via del Corso with the Trevi Fountain around the corner and the Pantheon a short walk off. One guest mentions the ancient baptismal fountain visible through the lobby's glass floor, which tells you the building itself is doing real work, not just the spa menu. That combination of serious wellness and a genuinely central address doesn't really exist elsewhere in Rome at this level. Classic rooms run about 300 square feet with no bathtub, tight even for one traveler, so book a higher category if the budget allows it. Service swings hard depending on who you get: one guest's front-desk manager, Myung, pulled together a makeup artist and photographer within three hours for a last-minute engagement shoot, while another's rooftop proposal went sideways when a hot-water outage pushed it into the room and staff pushed the couple to use their flowers immediately instead of waiting out the rain. A birthday dinner elsewhere had a server cut off the order mid-sentence and a dessert that arrived without a candle. Book a proper room category and don't stake a big-occasion night on flawless execution. The design splits opinion too: plenty of guests find the travertine minimalism calming, while a few architecturally minded travelers think it feels disconnected from the Roman heritage around it, more generic wellness retreat than Rome specifically. That's a matter of taste, not something everyone will notice or mind. Worth it for the wellness and the location if you pick your room carefully and don't need perfect service on the night that matters most.

What you're paying for at Six Senses Fiji is the staff, and the reviews make that case without much help from us. GEMs like Marika and Toni get thanked by name for running entire trips off WhatsApp, arranging birthday cakes and surprise songs on the last night; nannies like Bubu get singled out for how they handle kids, including one boy with muscular dystrophy who was carried into the water and taught to snorkel like it was nothing. The island backs them up: a beach that empties out most mornings, a real coral-gardening program with resident marine biologists, and surf guides who'll get you sitting in the right spot at Cloudbreak. The kids club and nanny program are the real thing, not a babysitting afterthought, which is why families rebook. The food is where this stops being five-star. One detailed account from November called it the worst she'd had at any five-star property, with croissants like plain bread and poached eggs drowning in vinegar; plenty of others just find it uneven, strong at the beach barbecue and off at breakfast. Villa maintenance is the other real issue: guests have been moved rooms over an underfilled pool with construction screws left inside, and mosquitoes get through the nets more than they should. Neither wrecks every stay, but both come up often enough to price in rather than dismiss as bad luck. Add the mandatory private speedboat transfer, around $1,840 FJD round trip, and the total runs well past the number on the website. This is a family resort built around kids and nannies, not a quiet couples retreat: travelers wanting adults-only calm tend to land at Kokomo instead. Families, surfers, and anyone who wants a beach to themselves should book anyway. For the staff and the reef, nothing else in Fiji is close.

The restoration does the heavy lifting: vaulted corridors, a pool guests keep singling out as the best part of the grounds, and rooms (even the entry Sanctuary Suite) big enough for a family of four to spread out over a week. Once you're assigned a GEM for the stay, the personal touches pile up fast: Prachi arranged a birthday card and a photoshoot with props and clearly doted on one guest's young son; Rajwardhan kept safari refreshments loaded at 4:30am; Amit wrote a personalized note for a couple on their honeymoon. The fort even staged an entire Holi celebration, colour and music included, for a guest who'd only mentioned being curious about it. Dining is where the picture gets messier. One recent review describes a laal maans that bore no resemblance to the Rajasthani original, 45-minute waits on restaurant dishes, and an hour for pre-ordered room service. A food and beverage manager confronted a guest over holding a dinner plate, which is as ugly as it sounds. A couple of winter stays also flagged lukewarm bathtub water and a breakfast spread that felt thin for a property at this price. None of this is universal — plenty of guests call the food outstanding, chef included, and one couple traveling through after 72 countries said the curry was the best of their trip — but it's recent enough that you shouldn't assume the kitchen matches the people who serve it. It's also roughly two hours from Ranthambore, so this isn't the base for a tiger-focused trip; travellers building a safari itinerary tend to pair those nights with the Oberoi instead. Service here runs warmer, if less polished, than Taj or Oberoi properties, and a few guests mention spa upselling and dinners interrupted by different waiters angling for tips. Book this for the fort, the wellness programming, and the people who make it personal.

Book Krabey Island for the villas and the personal host system, not for the beach or the food. One guest's host tracked down medication for a sick partner and kept checking in after they'd left; another quietly kept a private sunset dinner secret from a spouse until the right moment. The Hideaway Pool Villas, glass-walled with their own plunge pools, come up constantly as some of the best rooms in Southeast Asia, and the sustainability push (solar, an on-site farm, no imported salmon) shows up on the plate as local amok and curry rather than as a brochure line. The arithmetic after the room rate is where it gets uncomfortable. A ten-minute boat-and-van transfer has run guests anywhere from $100 to $180, a couple's massage close to $500, and the island alternates between its two restaurants nightly, so past three nights you're repeating menus. The pools run a genuinely cool 22-25°C rather than the 26-28°C you'd expect, the beaches are rocky and urchin-strewn, and more than one couple got restless after 48 hours on hilly, golf-cart-dependent terrain that feels more isolating than intended if the weather turns and snorkeling's off. This is a two-to-three-night stop, not a week-long base, unless you genuinely want to do nothing. Worth it paired with Siem Reap or another Cambodia stop, treated as a design-forward decompression stint rather than a beach holiday: a scaled-down One&Only Mandarina without the sand. Skip it if you're beach-first or allergic to add-on pricing. Otherwise, the villas and the people looking after you make the case on their own.
