Mandarin Oriental
Mandarin Oriental, Porto Cervo
Mandarin Oriental lands on the Costa Smeralda
We'll come back the moment rates load — with what we'd book, and why.
First look
Mandarin Oriental is building on the Costa Smeralda, on the forested slopes above the Gulf of Pevero at Porto Cervo. This one is a new build rather than a takeover of an existing hotel, developed with the Italian property group Gruppo Statuto. The plan is 83 rooms and suites, five restaurants and bars, a Spa at Mandarin Oriental, a fitness centre, indoor and outdoor pools, and a beach club down at Porto Paglia.
The date has already moved once. Mandarin Oriental announced the project in August 2023 for a mid-2026 opening, and coverage since then puts it at 2027, with no month attached. Worth knowing if you are planning around it, and worth knowing alongside the other arrival on this coast: Cheval Blanc is relaunching Hotel Pitrizza a few minutes away, currently slated for May 2027. Two brands of that size landing on the same stretch of Sardinian coast in the same year has not happened before.
We haven't stayed, so this is anticipation, not a verdict. What we'll be watching: whether a new build can sit convincingly on a coast whose best-loved hotels are 1960s granite and terracotta, and how the Costa Smeralda's short season shapes what is actually open when you get there. We'll find out when we visit.
Not yet scored. We publish a Fat Score only once a hotel is open and real guests have stayed and written about it — this is a first look, not a verdict.

Want us to get you in when it opens?
Nothing to book yet — rates usually load a few months out. We're Sofie and Nicolas; tell us roughly what you're after and we'll come back the moment Mandarin Oriental, Porto Cervo is bookable, with rates, what the rooms are actually like, and whether we'd go in the first season.
You'll be dealing with the two of us the whole way through, which is why we only take on a handful of trips at a time — if we're full, we'll say so. We reply by email, usually within one working day. The hotel pays us, not you: your rate is the same as booking direct, and the perks come on top.
