First look

The Gellért opened in 1918 as one of Budapest’s grand hotels, on the Buda bank by the Liberty Bridge, and it has been shut for restoration since December 2021. Mandarin Oriental will reopen it as Mandarin Oriental Gellert, Budapest, with 143 rooms and suites and its Art Nouveau design kept as the point.

The spa is where it means to make its name: treatments that draw on Hungary’s own bathing tradition alongside the group’s usual ones, in a city whose thermal baths are the reason many people come. It was announced for 2027 and is now reported for 2028. What we’ll be watching is whether the restoration keeps the building’s character, and whether the spa earns a place in a city that already has the Gellért’s own famous baths next door.

Want us to get you in when it opens?

Nothing to book yet; rates usually load a few months out. We’re Sofie and Nicolas; tell us roughly what you’re after and we’ll come back the moment Mandarin Oriental Gellert is bookable, with the rates, the room worth asking for, and whether we’d go in the first season.

It's just the two of us, so we take on a handful of trips at a time. If we're full, we'll say so. We reply within a working day. The hotel pays us, not you: your rate is the same as booking direct, and the perks come on top.

Before it opens

When does Mandarin Oriental Gellert, Budapest open?

It was announced in January 2024 for 2027, and a Budapest destination update in October 2026 reports 2028. Mandarin Oriental hasn’t published a month, so treat the date as expected rather than fixed.

Is this Mandarin Oriental’s first hotel in Budapest?

Yes. The Gellért is the group’s first hotel in Budapest: 143 rooms and suites in the 1918 building on the Buda bank by the Liberty Bridge, with a spa, an indoor pool and a rooftop bar looking across the Danube to Pest.
