The honest review of Capella Bangkok

We did Capella and the Mandarin Oriental back to back and there was genuinely no contest.

Capella's breakfast let us order off a full menu and still hit a buffet loaded with scratch-made pastries and fresh fruit, executed at a level I haven't seen elsewhere. The whole hotel outperformed the Mandarin by a wide margin. I left thinking it might be the best breakfast setup I've had at any luxury hotel.

We showed up underdressed and unplanned for drinks and still got treated like proper guests, not an afterthought.

We hadn't dressed for a luxury hotel and I felt a little out of place walking into Stella, but the staff, especially May, Moo and Nook, welcomed us with zero judgment. The bar's atmosphere managed to feel elegant without being stiff. It left a genuinely strong impression for what was meant to be a spontaneous, low-key evening.

After a long flight from the US we walked in exhausted and the staff made us feel like royalty from the first minute.

The room overlooking the river felt luxurious without feeling stiff, and dinner at Phra Nakhon was a genuinely excellent tasting menu with wine pairings. We ended the night at Stella with live music and cocktails. It was the kind of stay where the high-end feel never got in the way of it being comfortable.

Even with the hotel completely full over New Year's Eve, nothing about our stay felt rushed or chaotic.

The General Manager personally made sure we felt looked after despite the property running at capacity, and the New Year's Eve event itself was organized without ever feeling like a mob scene. The craftsmanship and material quality genuinely exceeded top hotels we've stayed at in Europe. We're already planning to come back.

Of more than 100 hotels I've stayed at, this is the one I keep returning to.

The riverfront villas are a real draw, and Phra Nakhon's Michelin-starred kitchen backs up the property's reputation rather than trading on it. The cocktail-making classes add something most competitors don't bother offering. It's a property that keeps earning repeat visits rather than just first impressions.

We travelled with our dog and the room amenities were thoughtful, but the pet policy itself seemed to confuse the staff more than once.

The room came with a proper dog bed and bowls, and the reception team was warm throughout, but when we asked where our dog was allowed on property, staff had to go check with a colleague, twice. There's even a Dog Not Allowed sign at Pranakorn that turned out to be wrong (dogs are fine in a stroller). Dinner there was also too salty across a few dishes, though the service at the table was genuinely attentive despite the food missing the mark.

My Culturist heard that I was exhausted from the flight and had a bubble bath waiting before I even asked properly.

Opal from the Culturist team ran my whole stay, from arranging the bath to talking me into joining the mask-making and Thai sweets workshop, which turned out to be genuinely fun even as an adult. Staff across the board, fitness, the bar, the spa, were all sharp and warm. The only ding on an otherwise flawless stay was housekeeping forgetting to lock the balcony door once.

Every touchpoint from the first booking email onward made me confident this stay would go well, and it did.

Special mention to Nicky from Culturist, who spent two days making my son feel like a genuine friend, and Franky at Stella whose cocktails were consistently excellent. The WhatsApp line solved everything from getting ice to booking outside restaurants almost instantly. My one real gripe was breakfast: I'd have preferred more buffet variety with the à la carte as a supplement rather than the reverse, and oddly the non-Thai dishes (the Korean beef soup, the pancakes) outshone the Thai ones.

A week here showed me the service holds up under pressure, right down to a tuk-tuk driver trying to hustle me outside the gates.

The Culturists and Curators never seemed to tire of my questions, no matter how many I asked over seven days, and their WhatsApp responsiveness for restaurant bookings and transport felt effortless rather than scripted. When a driver outside the hotel tried to take advantage of me, staff stepped in immediately and handled it. The gym is well designed, though the personal training I was assigned fell short of what I'd expect at this level, and the spa, while very good, didn't quite clear the extremely high bar I'd set for it going in.

I told them it was my birthday when booking and they turned it into the best birthday I've had, cake included.

Balloons and a cake were waiting in the room, but the real standout was the bed, which I'd genuinely have chained myself to if allowed. Our balcony had panoramic river views, perfect for their own-label champagne, and dinner at Stella ended with the jazz singer stopping to sing happy birthday and another cake arriving. The 7am yoga class the next morning was surprisingly professional, and my wife still talks about the beef rib soup at breakfast.

The room alone set a new bar for what I expect from a city hotel, and the massage was the best I've had anywhere.

Our room was large, calm, and beautifully finished, with a river view that made the whole stay feel peaceful rather than showy. Breakfast leaned on genuine local dishes done with real care rather than a generic international spread. The spa's wet facilities and the massage itself were the standout of the whole trip.
