The honest review of Bujera Fort

Community score pending

The fat travel community hasn’t weighed in yet. When they do, it gets its score.

The verdict

Bujera Fort is a converted heritage property in the hills outside Udaipur, run by an English couple, Richard and Trish, with a small local team, and it works because it feels like staying with people who actually care whether you eat well and sleep well, not like checking into a hotel. The food is cooked to order from the property’s own farm and local suppliers, which means almost no waste and genuinely fresh plates; guests get invited into the kitchen to watch chefs work, and dinner recipes come from staff members’ own mothers. Rooms vary in layout but share the same attention: marble bathrooms, good plumbing, proper beds, and the kind of design detail (salvaged architectural pieces, a library, fairy lights in the frangipani trees) that reads as curated rather than decorated.

The catch is the location: it’s roughly twenty minutes outside central Udaipur, so this isn’t a base for wandering into the old city on foot. Book it for the retreat from the city, not as a city hotel, and the drive back and forth is the price of that quiet. There’s also no real wellness infrastructure beyond the pool and an in-room massage, so anyone wanting a proper spa day should look elsewhere. One account describes the owner losing his temper badly with a tour group on arrival over a misunderstanding about a client’s health; it’s the rare sour note against an otherwise long run of people saying the hosts were the best part of their stay, but it’s worth knowing a small owner-run property carries that kind of risk.

The evening ritual of cocktails with Richard and Trish followed by a candlelit communal dinner is what people come back for, and plenty do. This suits travellers who want a few days of calm between Rajasthan’s cities more than anyone trying to be in the thick of Udaipur itself: book it for the food and the garden, and arrange a driver for the rest.

Strengths

  • Food cooked to order from the hotel’s own farm, with near-zero waste from advance booking
  • Individually decorated rooms with architectural salvage and genuine design character
  • Communal evening cocktails and candlelit dinners hosted by the owners
  • Peaceful hillside setting as a break from Udaipur’s crowds

Trade-offs

  • Roughly twenty minutes outside central Udaipur, so not a walkable city base
  • No dedicated spa or wellness facility beyond the pool and in-room massage
  • One detailed account of a hostile confrontation with the owner on arrival

Richard really knows how to look after people, and the food backs it up.

This place is run with real care, and you can feel it in the details everywhere. The food was absolutely delicious every time we sat down to eat. It was the perfect way to get away from the pace of the cities nearby.

I genuinely don’t understand why this isn’t rated as a five-star hotel.

Alastair Broom Feb 2026

From the welcome at the door to the decor in the rooms, I couldn’t find a single fault with the place. Everything was beautifully presented, the service was outstanding and the food was excellent throughout our stay. I’d go back without a second thought.

We even got a hot water bottle tucked into our bed, which tells you how much thought goes into this place.

Two nights here felt like enough of a reset from the chaos of the cities we’d been in. The rooms were spacious, the food was delicious, and the staff could not have been more helpful. I honestly can’t work out why the online rating undersells it so badly.

“we even had a hot water bottle in our beds!” in their words
  • Thoughtful room touches
  • Spacious rooms

This is the best hotel in Udaipur outside of the Taj Palace, and it’s quieter than either.

Max Thornton Feb 2026

Being away from the hustle and bustle made it the perfect base for seeing the rest of the city without dealing with the crowds. Richard was a wonderful host throughout.

Red flag

This felt more like a homestay than a hotel, and the price didn’t match what we got.

Roma Àhuja Mar 2025

The breakfast was below average and dinner was only okay, nothing special for what we paid. There were no views to speak of from the property either. I wouldn’t call this overrated hype justified.

“No views at all from the hotel.” in their words
  • Underwhelming breakfast and dinner
  • No views from the property

This felt like staying with friends who happen to have an incredible farm-to-table kitchen.

AntoniaMGB Mar 2026

We stayed in the cottage with its own sitting room and dipping pool in the garden, and the beds were ridiculously comfortable with proper white sheets. Lunch and dinner get booked in the morning so almost nothing goes to waste, and we sat in on a cooking demonstration with the in-house chef who was patient with every question we had. The massage after days of travel was completely worth it, and the hosts pointed us toward local tailors in Udaipur who made us new outfits in days.

“it feels as though you are staying with friends” in their words
  • Private cottage with garden dipping pool
  • Farm-to-table cooking demonstration

I spent half my stay just photographing stone carvings and the view toward the Aravalli hills.

The rooms were well furnished with splendid marble bathrooms and genuinely good plumbing, which isn’t a given in this part of the world. Staff were cheerful and efficient without ever seeming put out by requests. Dinner was a rotation of curries, several of them family recipes from the chefs’ own mothers, and when my husband needed a break from Indian food they sorted him out without any fuss.

  • Marble bathrooms with strong water pressure
  • Family-recipe curries at dinner

It was built by an Englishman with the best taste, blending English and Indian styles with a genuinely good eye.

SantaMontefiore Mar 2026

Every room is decorated differently and the beds are deep and luxurious, with showers that actually have pressure and internet that actually works. There’s a stunning pool, a couple of gorgeous Labradors wandering around, and fairy lights at dusk that make cocktail hour feel like an occasion. The owner Richard has endless stories if you want the company, and I’m already planning to go back.

“Twinkly fairy lights at dusk, cocktail time is heaven” in their words
  • English-Indian design blend done with real taste
  • Reliable wifi and water pressure

Watching the four chefs prep the evening meal turned out to be one of the highlights of our stay.

Forty-eight hours here felt like exactly the right amount of time to properly unwind. The gardens were beautiful and the management was genuinely kind and skilled rather than just going through the motions. Richard Hanlon helped us with everything we needed, and we’re already planning a longer stay next time.

  • Beautiful gardens
  • Engaged, hands-on kitchen team

After fifteen nights touring Rajasthan, this was the stop we were happiest we’d booked.

V2156THjanec Dec 2025

It’s a little outside the city centre but the drive is short, and we were always glad to retreat back to the quiet of the property. Richard and Trish have built a genuinely welcoming, social place, with pre-dinner cocktails where we chatted with them and other guests. The staff were some of the most cheerful and efficient we encountered on the whole trip, and the food was fantastic throughout.

They invited us into the kitchen to watch the food being prepared, which came from their own kitchen garden.

The rooms were full of small details that clearly took real thought, and the building and grounds show the same level of design care throughout. Staff seemed genuinely happy in their jobs and were attentive without being overbearing. The pool and garden area felt like a real retreat from the rest of Rajasthan.

  • Own kitchen garden for produce
  • Thoughtful room details

There’s a proper library on site and architectural salvage pieces scattered everywhere you look.

DavidFair Mar 2025

The garden around the central pool was lovely, and the rooms themselves felt genuinely luxurious rather than just comfortable. Evenings were the best part: everyone sat together for cocktails before a candlelit dinner under frangipani trees strung with fairy lights. Jestuan on staff went out of his way to make sure we had everything we needed.

  • Communal candlelit dinners
  • On-site library and salvage pieces

I’d wanted to stay here for over ten years, and it was better than I’d imagined the whole time.

NomadJulie Mar 2025

The luxury here is understated rather than showy: good care products, proper tea, a cafetière, and a coffee blend that was somehow perfect. The setting does a lot of the work too, with birdsong and distant livestock sounds instead of traffic. It’s quietly confident in its own quality rather than needing to prove anything.

“There is luxury & there is Bujera fort luxury” in their words
  • Understated, considered luxury touches
  • Genuinely peaceful rural setting

My six-year-old son got just as much attention from the staff as the adults did.

Dane Bailey Dec 2024

The room design and the gardens had a charm that felt genuinely fun rather than just tasteful, and at night the whole place turns magical. We met some really interesting people at the evening drinks gathering, and Richard and Trish couldn’t have been more welcoming. Shakti sorted our transfers and gave us solid recommendations for Udaipur.

  • Family-friendly staff attention
  • Helpful transfer and sightseeing arrangements

Red flag

The owner’s reaction when we arrived was so hostile it ruined the whole stay for our group.

Doug Chinnery Feb 2024

After a misunderstanding about one client’s health status, the owner launched into an angry tirade at us on arrival instead of just calling to clarify beforehand. We were left feeling completely unwelcome, and even once things were cleared up there was no apology. I’ve led tours for nearly twenty years and never had an experience like it, which is a shame because the property itself really is beautiful.

“His appalling tirade and outburst of anger toward us on arrival” in their words
  • Beautiful property
  • Hostile confrontation with owner on arrival
  • No apology after misunderstanding resolved

About Bujera Fort

Bujera Fort is a heritage boutique hotel in the hills outside Udaipur, Rajasthan, run by an English couple alongside a local team. The property combines English and Indian design influences across individually decorated rooms and cottages, some with private sitting rooms and dipping pools, set within gardens that overlook the Aravalli hills. The building incorporates architectural salvage pieces and a library alongside its guest rooms, arranged around a central courtyard and pool.

On property, meals are prepared by an in-house kitchen team using produce from the hotel’s own farm and local growers, with lunch and dinner typically booked in advance. Guests can watch food preparation in the kitchen and take part in cooking demonstrations. There is a central swimming pool, gardens, and massage treatments available on site. The location is a short drive from central Udaipur, putting the city’s palaces, lake and old town within reach while keeping the property itself in a quieter, rural setting.

What fat travellers ask

Is Bujera Fort worth it?

For travellers who want a quiet, food-focused few days outside Udaipur’s city centre, most guests say yes without hesitation; the farm-cooked meals and individually designed rooms are consistently rated well above what the modest price suggests.

What’s the best time to visit Bujera Fort?

Guests describe the gardens, pool and outdoor courtyard dining as central to the experience, which points to the cooler months (roughly October through March) as the most comfortable window for Rajasthan.

How does Bujera Fort compare to staying in central Udaipur?

It trades proximity to the lake and old city for quiet, garden grounds and a more intimate, homestay-like atmosphere; guests consistently say the twenty-minute drive is worth it for the calm, though it does mean arranging transport for sightseeing.

Who is Bujera Fort best for?

It suits travellers doing a longer Rajasthan circuit who want a restful stop with excellent food and personal hosting, rather than those who want to walk out the door into Udaipur’s markets and palaces.

How do I book Bujera Fort?

Directly with the hotel. The Reserve button on this page takes you there, and the reservation is made with the hotel, in your name.

What is the smartest way to book Bujera Fort?

Directly with the hotel is the simplest: the reservation is then the hotel’s own, so a change of dates or a request for a particular room goes straight to the people who run it.

Can I get a free room upgrade at Bujera Fort?

Not something anyone can promise: it depends on what’s still unsold the day you arrive. Telling the hotel in advance that you’re celebrating something is worth doing.
