Bill Bensley built this around the Sukosol family's own antique collection, and under 40 keys means it reads more like a private house than a hotel: a vinyl room, a boxing ring, a cinema, a music room that guests keep describing as its own kind of rabbit hole. That pull is real. One guest's butler, Guram, organized a boat transfer to a local restaurant on a single night's layover; another's butler, Gawn, stayed reachable on WhatsApp for the whole trip and helped plan each day. Chon Thai and the riverside breakfast draw praise from nearly everyone who eats there, and the private boat shuttle to Sathorn or ICON Siam works as advertised, cocktail stop at the pier included.

The catch is the flip side of the setting. The river cuts you off from the rest of the city: one Bangkok-based traveller put it plainly, staying on the river is bad for transportation if you actually want to explore, and Sukhumvit or Lang Suan serve that better. One guest was told the shuttle boat couldn't collect them from a nearer pier and cancelled the booking outright. Staffing thins out when weddings take over the property: one stay had the Story House blocked off for two straight days by wedding guests, with slow seating, slow water refills, and a butler who was excellent throughout and then vanished on the last day. The pool deck is small and the spa gets called just okay against what the rest of the place promises; loose fixtures and a stray spider web turn up too, though most people treat these as minor next to everything else.

Book it for the design and the sense of escape, not for convenience. Skip it if you need to be near the old city or nightlife; book it if you want three or four nights that feel like nowhere else in Bangkok.

A room here starts well above what a new-build riverside tower charges in Bangkok, and what you get for it is a hotel that still runs like an old grand hotel should: met at the car, walked to the room, checked in without ever standing at a desk. The location does real work too — set back from the road on the Chao Phraya, with a private boat shuttle straight to ICONSIAM and the BTS, so you get quiet on property and the city five minutes away by water. Guests who've been coming for a decade keep landing on the same thing: the boat crew, the breakfast team, the pool attendants all seem to know the rhythm of the place.

The rooms are where the argument gets honest. Multiple recent stays describe them as well kept but visibly dated next to Bangkok's newer riverside competition — one guest called the water controls confusing, another found no plug within reach of the bed, and a wall-mounted extension cord that housekeeping simply dropped off, without setup, was the worst version of that same problem. Breakfast is the highlight of most stays and also the one place service consistency slips: several people separately describe peak-hour seating turning chaotic, with nobody at the host stand and staff walking past a guest waiting to be seated. None of that undoes the pattern of thoughtful, specific gestures — a surprise anniversary cake built around a shared photo, a birthday cake remembered four months after booking — but it means the polish isn't uniform every morning.

Book it for the river, the boat, and a level of care that shows up in the small stuff more often than not; the rooms need a refresh to fully match the rate, and that's worth knowing going in. For a first Bangkok stay or a long-standing Peninsula loyalist, this still delivers the classic grand-hotel experience nothing new on the river quite replicates.
