Steps from Place Vendôme, this is the anti-Ritz: modern, quiet, deliberately unshowy in a neighborhood built on gilt and marble. Traveller after traveller, first-timers and Globalists on their fourth or fifth stay alike, land on the same point: the staff is why people keep coming back. One guest's concierge called five different wine shops to track down a specific bottle; another had a Disneyland transfer arranged for a kid's birthday; duty managers like Lisa and Mouhcine get remembered by name months later, though at least one recent Globalist had the opposite experience at check-in, so it isn't universal. The breakfast buffet draws the same praise on repeat, often called among the best in the city even by guests who found little else memorable.

What's harder to defend is what you're paying for the room itself. Cash rates run $1,000-$2,000+ a night, and at that level the TVs tucked behind mirrored panels, furnishings some guests call 1980s-vintage, and a small spa (the hot tub has gone out of service without guests being told) start to feel thin against newer competition. The recently renovated Hôtel du Louvre keeps coming up as the points-and-cash comparison worth checking, though it doesn't match the room size here. Dining is uneven too: the restaurant has held a Michelin star, but service has drawn real complaints about long waits and inattentiveness, and a basic cocktail near €34 doesn't always match what lands on the table.

This is a points hotel first, a cash hotel second. On a Hyatt redemption or a Globalist rate, breakfast alone and that concierge desk make it one of the strongest plays in Paris; the room's shortcomings barely register against the value. At full rack rate, you're paying palace money for a building that's starting to show its age. Book it for the location and the people who run it.

Since the December 2025 reopening, the case for booking hasn't really moved: the same oversized rooms Tokyo has always been short on, a spa floor with Fuji views that people keep calling the best in the city, and a breakfast at Girandole (the Japanese set over the Western, specifically) that guests describe as among the finest hotel meals they've had anywhere. The New York Bar and Grill still gets called one of the city's great rooms to sit in. Book it for Girandole, the spa floor, and the New York Bar — that part of the trip is not in question.

The renovated rooms are the one place the reviews disagree with the reputation: several 2026 stays call them "beige," comfortable but generic enough to pass for a good business hotel, at money that buys sharper design elsewhere in the city like Bulgari Tokyo. Service is the harder problem, because it isn't a matter of taste. One guest this year had pre-arrival emails go unanswered and no turndown across four nights, with amenities never restocked. Another in the same window was upgraded, greeted warmly, and remembered by name at breakfast. Both stays happened weeks apart at the same hotel, which is really the whole story: you can't predict which one you'll get.

Shinjuku's shuttle-to-station setup still throws first-timers, and a couple of guests doing repeat Tokyo trips said they'd pick Roppongi or Toranomon for a pure relaxation stay instead. None of that touches what's upstairs. If service consistency matters more to you than the room and the breakfast, price that in before you book — otherwise this is still worth the rate for what's on the top floors.
