Mandarin Oriental: Sitting directly over Columbus Circle with a subway stop underneath and a Whole Foods in the building settles most people’s view of the address.

Mandarin Oriental: The Hudson-facing lap pool and spa book out fast on weekends, and the couples treatment gets singled out even in an otherwise mixed stay.

The verdicts

Mandarin Oriental, New York

A room here runs somewhere north of $1,000 a night, and what you get for it is one of the best addresses in Manhattan: directly over Columbus Circle, a subway entrance downstairs, Central Park across the street, and a Whole Foods in the building so you never have to go outside for basics. Rooms facing the park or the Hudson get singled out again and again as the reason to book, and the 35th-floor lobby with its Chihuly glass sets a tone most guests say the rest of the hotel actually lives up to. The staff turn up by name in a way that's hard to ignore: a concierge named Michael kept a family updated through a flight diversion and had wine and a suite upgrade waiting when they finally landed at 1:30am the next day, and a manager comped a tea service after construction noise from a neighboring room disrupted a guest's morning.

Not everything holds at the same standard. One family found their two rooms treated unevenly, one got a fridge in an hour and a half after three calls, one had a lingering odor and a stained carpet that nobody addressed. Afternoon tea is the most consistent soft spot: portions are on the small side for $135 to $185 a person, and more than one guest walked away thinking it didn't match what they'd had in London or Dubai. A returning Mandarin Oriental guest also flagged a check-in that felt more like an upsell pitch than a welcome, which cuts against the brand's own reputation for remembering returning faces.

None of that changes who this is for. Families get a genuinely kid-friendly welcome (stuffed animals, a robe sized for a toddler), couples get a spa that's worth booking ahead for, and anyone who wants to walk into Central Park without touching a taxi has found their hotel. Skip the afternoon tea and book it for the view, the location, and a staff that keeps making the small moments count.

Aman New York

A base room here (Deluxe Suite, roughly 725 square feet) runs from about $1,100 to $3,500 a night depending on season, and what arrives for that is real: Jean-Michel Gathy's dark, warm interiors, a working fireplace, and soundproofing so good you can watch a fire truck go by outside and hear nothing. The building itself, the 1921 Crown Building on 57th Street, is one of the best-designed hotel shells in the city, and the three-floor spa with its Banya and Hammam suites gets more genuine enthusiasm from guests than almost anything else on the property, cold plunge terraces and all.

Where it gets complicated is everything Aman built its name on outside the room. Several guests who've stayed at other Amans describe a butler service that's advertised but doesn't really exist, a concierge that lost a scheduled dinner reservation entirely, and a front desk that can feel like a well-run five-star chain rather than the anticipatory, name-remembering service the brand promises elsewhere. One couple celebrating a tenth anniversary got a chaotic, unresolved checkout after a lobby flooding issue; another found the pool disappointingly cold with no complimentary access to the cold plunge or jacuzzi unless you book the paid Banya treatment. The food is consistently described as good but not memorable, which stings less in a city with this many restaurants but still doesn't match the price tag.

Book it if you want a quiet, beautifully built room to retreat to in Midtown and you're not counting on Aman's resort-level hand-holding to show up. The rooms alone justify a stay for anyone who values a genuinely soundproofed, well-finished space over a livelier boutique address. If personal recognition and a fully realized butler relationship are the point of paying Aman prices, that's inconsistent here. Go for the room and the spa.
