One regular writes that new staff greeted her by name on a return visit, purely from training, not a personal history with her. That kind of repeated, unprompted detail across strangers' reports is hard to fake, and it's the real reason people keep coming back rather than trying Capella or the new Aman down the river.

The catch is space, and it's an honest one. A Deluxe Premier Room in the River Wing runs around $500 a night low season for roughly 42 square meters, comfortable but noticeably tighter than what Four Seasons or Capella give you at similar money, and more than one guest has said so without rancor. The building shows its age in the standard categories, even with the 150th-anniversary refresh and the new gym (ice plunge, sauna, genuinely well-reviewed) landing well. Breakfast and common areas can turn chaotic during a wedding or corporate event, and the riverside setting that makes evening views so good also means real traffic time if Sukhumvit is where you actually need to be.

Book it for the service and the sense of a hotel that's been doing this for nearly 150 years and still means it, not for square footage. If a bigger, more modern standard room matters more to you than history, Four Seasons is the name people keep raising. If you want to feel looked after in a way that seems to run deeper than training, this is still the one.

Guest after guest names actual staff members unprompted, months and years apart: door attendants Joaquin and Graham, receptionists Hugo, Ruby, Georgi, breakfast server Mark, bartender Claire. One reviewer describes a receptionist talking a couple through a card decline so smoothly the awkwardness never lands. That kind of repeated, specific naming doesn't happen by accident. The people running this hotel are the reason to book it, ahead of the building or the rate.

Room quality swings hard depending on where you land: turret rooms and park-facing Deluxes read as genuinely special, but this is a converted, listed Victorian building, and some guests end up in interior rooms with no real window or thin connecting-door soundproofing. One guest paying around £1,000 a night got moved to a smaller, view-less room after a noisy night and was offered a drink at the bar as the fix. Push for a Hyde Park-facing Deluxe and avoid anything near a connecting door or lift — the gap between a good room and a bad one here is wider than the rate should allow.

Dinner by Heston Blumenthal (two Michelin stars, historic English dishes rather than anything experimental) and The Rosebery's park-view breakfast and afternoon tea are both genuinely strong, repeatedly singled out over Claridge's or the Lanesborough by guests doing the same old-world London comparison. Book this one for the staff, the view, and the food, go in knowing to fight for room category, and it earns the stay.
