Overall
Overall: Fairmont Udaipur Palace Score pending, Taj Lake Palace 16.5 out of 20.Service Why
Service: Fairmont Udaipur Palace Not scored, Taj Lake Palace 18 out of 20.Fairmont Udaipur Palace: A butler decorated a room for an anniversary and security tracked down a stolen phone through a chain of borrowed numbers.
Taj Lake Palace: Named staff like Pradeep, Surendra and Kajal get singled out constantly for going out of their way, though a checkout dispute over a ‘regular guest’ getting priority shows the warmth has limits.
Rooms & Design Why
Rooms & Design: Fairmont Udaipur Palace Not scored, Taj Lake Palace 16.5 out of 20.Fairmont Udaipur Palace: A genuinely new build in 2026 that plays with palace style instead of replaying it, with private plunge pools in several rooms.
Taj Lake Palace: Hand-painted 18th-century rooms and silk fabrics impress most people, but several guests found bathrooms cramped and finishes worn where lake damp meets the walls.
Location Why
Location: Fairmont Udaipur Palace Not scored, Taj Lake Palace 19 out of 20.Fairmont Udaipur Palace: Set in the Aravalli hills outside the city, which means calm views but a real fight to get a cab or an Uber into Udaipur.
Taj Lake Palace: Floating in the middle of Lake Pichola with a boat-only arrival and rose-petal welcome is the reason people book this over anywhere else in Udaipur.
Dining Why
Dining: Fairmont Udaipur Palace Not scored, Taj Lake Palace 14.5 out of 20.Fairmont Udaipur Palace: Bahaar and the tea lounge Dastaan get singled out, though the buffet dinner draws real complaints about cold food and slow service.
Taj Lake Palace: Jharokha and Neel Kamal get real praise for the thali and lake views, but more than one guest flagged Bhairo’s fixed price and pushy wine upsell as poor value.
Wellness Why
Wellness: Fairmont Udaipur Palace Not scored, Taj Lake Palace 14 out of 20.Fairmont Udaipur Palace: Multiple pools, a spa guests call excellent, and a gym one traveller rated the best they’d used anywhere in India.
Taj Lake Palace: The floating boat spa is a genuine one-off, but the pool and gym are small and wellness isn’t why anyone books this hotel.

Fairmont opened this palace in July 2025, and it is built for weddings rather than passing trade: expect a packed events calendar and plan around it. What you get for that is a genuinely large, playful take on palace architecture in the hills above Udaipur, rooms with private plunge pools, and a staff that keeps fixing things most hotels would let slide. One guest's phone went missing at a wedding lunch; the head of security stayed on the case through borrowed numbers until it turned up. Another family had their quiet corner protected from a wedding party by being moved, unprompted, to a calmer wing with their own pool.
The trade-off is real and worth pricing in. Book during wedding season and you may wait on a buggy, queue at check-in, or watch the buffet dinner turn lukewarm while the kitchen is stretched across a banquet and a dining room at once; one guest's à la carte dinner was excellent the same night their buffet was mediocre. The hotel also sits well outside Udaipur proper, so a private cab or Uber back into the old city takes planning, not a wave at the door. The buffet and the peak-wedding crowds are the one consistent gap between what's promised and what shows up on a packed weekend.
None of that should talk you out of it. Book a plunge-pool room and eat à la carte, not buffet, on any night there's a wedding on property. Go for a family trip, an anniversary, or a quieter shoulder-season stretch and the mini golf, pickleball, multiple pools and the gym (genuinely excellent, by more than one account) make it worth the distance from town. For a few nights of being properly looked after in the hills outside Udaipur, this earns the booking.
You're paying for a building that cannot be replicated: an 18th-century pleasure palace floating on Lake Pichola, reachable only by boat, with rose petals and a ceremonial umbrella waiting on the jetty. That arrival is the reason this hotel exists on every bucket list, and the staff mostly deliver on the promise — guests write in constantly about Pradeep, Surendra, Kajal and a dozen others who remembered a birthday, tracked down cow's milk for a sick toddler at midnight, or walked a family through the actual Octopussy filming locations.
The rooms are smaller than you'd expect at this rate, and more than one guest describes bathrooms that feel dated rather than deliberately old-world, with damp creeping in where the lake meets the building. Dining is the real trade-off: Neel Kamal's thalis land well, but Bhairo's fixed $150 menu with an unprompted $350 wine upsell reads as pure margin-extraction, and a few guests found the spice dialed down and the food merely fine for the price. A checkout dispute over a "regular guest" getting priority over a paying first-timer is the kind of thing that shouldn't happen at this level, and it did, recently.
Book it for the setting and the service, not the rooms or the spa: if you want bigger suites and a private plunge pool, the Leela across the lake is the frequently-raised alternative. But nothing else in Udaipur gets you a 500-year-old palace to wander at night with a gin and tonic, and that's worth the smaller room.
We’re Sofie and Nicolas, and we’ve stayed in hotels like these ourselves. Tell us what the trip is and we’ll tell you which one we’d book, and why. We’re not really a booking service, but a few times a year we plan one properly for someone; if that’s what you’re after, say so.
It's just the two of us, so we take on a handful of trips at a time. If we're full, we'll say so. We reply within a working day. The hotel pays us, not you: your rate is the same as booking direct, and the perks come on top.
