Twenty-three tents sit in a jungle valley roughly half an hour from central Ubud, each with its own layout and story, built by Bill Bensley as theatre rather than a conventional hotel floor plan. Service that notices you fast is what stays with people: staff learning names and daily plans within a day, a culturist like Ayu or Vidi who plans the stay around you rather than handing you a brochure, and small gestures like flowers for an anniversary or a hospitality room offered on a late checkout day.
Price in the real friction before you book. There are roughly 120 steps between some tents and the main areas, which one guest found genuinely exhausting after a mishandled upgrade left them relocating rooms twice. Plunge pools run cold in the shaded valley tents, mosquitoes show up for some guests and not others, and the open-plan bathroom with no door takes adjustment. None of that is dealbreaker territory for most people who come for the concept, but a traveler who wants a conventional luxury room with four walls and a reliably warm pool should know what they are signing up for.
Book this for travelers who want atmosphere and story over polish and predictability. If you need glass windows, flat terrain, and a menu that never misses, Mandapa and Amandari sit nearby and solve for comfort more than theater. If you want to fall asleep to rain on a canvas roof and wake up to staff who already know your coffee order, this is one of the more memorable stays in Bali, and worth the climb.
Cross the suspension bridge over the lotus pond and the jungle valley setting makes its case immediately. The villas step down the hillside toward the Ayung River, most with their own pool, and the standouts (the Sayan Villas up at the top of the property) come with a pool big enough to actually swim laps in rather than dip a toe. The rooms are the biggest reason to book, but the staff are the reason people extend their stay on arrival: one guest mentioned wanting to rent a motorcycle at check-in and it was arranged by morning with no follow-up needed.
There's no elevator and the property is genuinely vertical, so factor in real walking (or waiting for a golf cart) between the lobby and the lower villas. Dining is good rather than genuinely exceptional: the Chef's Table and the floating breakfast are worth building a day around, but more than one guest rated the Western dishes and breakfast buffet as merely fine, not the kind of food you'd fly back for on its own. Some villa furniture could use an update, though nobody who mentioned it thought it changed the stay.
This suits a honeymoon or a milestone trip more than a short city stopover: the setting, the spa, and the sheer quiet reward staying three nights minimum. If you want to be out exploring Ubud all day, a simpler property nearby will do the job for less; if you want a resort where the room itself is the destination and dinner by the river feels like an occasion, book the villa and the spa treatment, and don't rush the stay.
