The Taj Cape Town sits right across from Company Gardens, close enough to the City Sightseeing stop and the Bo-Kaap tour office that you can skip a rental car entirely. The staff who work the place are the real draw: doormen who’ll switch to French mid-shift, a concierge team that gets you into fully-booked restaurants without the usual deposit dance, and a front desk that hands out warm towels and iced tea before you’ve said your name. One guest’s dessert arrived with no cutlery on a birthday night. Another got waved off at checkout when she asked for water to give her son medication, until a second staff member stepped in. These are real gaps, not deal-breakers, and they read like a hotel that’s better at the big gesture than the small follow-through.
The building itself needs honesty too: several recent guests call the furniture and fittings dated, and one flatly described the look as run-down next to other Taj properties worldwide. Breakfast is the other soft spot: excellent in scope, with Indian dishes done well, but plates go unreplenished and tables get skipped some mornings. Bombay Brasserie is the redemption, consistently the meal people mention as their trip highlight, while Mint’s steak has come out overcooked more than once. One theft complaint involving turndown staff and a management response guests found dismissive is worth knowing about, even if it’s an outlier against the volume of praise here.
Book it for the location and the people on the floor, not the room finishes. Ask for a high floor for the Table Mountain view, eat at Bombay Brasserie over Mint, and go in expecting warmth and hustle from staff rather than a freshly renovated room. Families with small kids should note the lack of baby gear beyond a crib and wash kit. For a couple or solo traveller who wants to walk everywhere and be looked after by name, it earns the booking.

The location right in the middle of downtown made everything easy to reach. The chai was memorable enough that I still think about it, and the spa left me relaxed in a way I didn’t expect. Every staff member I dealt with paid attention to the small stuff, which is rare for me at this point.

We had a Family Suite with plenty of room, and the breakfast buffet was one of the best parts of the stay. Dinner at both Mint and Bombay Brasserie went beyond what we expected. Josephine, the manager, and Shameez at the front desk made sure we felt genuinely welcomed the entire time, not just checked in.

The appearance felt run-down compared to other Taj properties I’ve seen, but the welcome from Rita and the rest of the team was excellent from the start. My room on the 17th floor had a great balcony and spectacular Table Mountain views, with comfortable beds and a well-done bathroom. We stayed in room 217, and with the heritage-style feel it reminded us of our own place back in Australia. The bed and pillows were some of the best we’ve had, and the bathroom felt properly luxurious. We didn’t get to the pool or gym but the setup looked great for anyone who wanted it. Christopher, working the club level in the evenings, was funny and warm without ever losing his professionalism, and the location across from Company Gardens made getting around effortless.

This was our second stay, six years after the first, and it held up just as well. The Taj Club had fine snacks in the evening but a limited breakfast, so we preferred the regular restaurant downstairs. The best part was meeting Rakesh Pawar, the new head chef, who came to our table after we mentioned our Asian bistro order wasn’t quite right, comped the meal, and spent 45 minutes genuinely asking about our feedback. The next night at Bombay Brasserie he made us off-menu dishes he was testing and took notes again, which turned an already good dinner into something memorable.

Tareeq from concierge was outstanding the whole trip, full of good recommendations that made our visit better. Dinner at Mint with Felicia’s service and the food at Bombay Brasserie were real highlights. Breakfast, though, was consistently poor: items weren’t restocked, labels were wrong, and some tables got skipped by the waitstaff entirely. The lowest point was at checkout, when I asked for water to give my son his medication and was told to go to the gym for cold or find a bathroom tap on the second floor for room temperature, until another staff member stepped in and helped.

My room had an excellent view of Table Mountain and felt genuinely comfortable, aside from an empty minibar. The location made it an easy base for the city. Mint’s ribeye came out overcooked and flavorless for the price, and breakfast the next morning actually made me feel unwell, though the pastries and coffee were solid. Staff throughout were friendly, but I’d stay again and skip Mint next time.

I called ahead about parking and was told there were porters to take the car, but nobody was available when I arrived, so I got sent to park across the street myself. The high tea was cold, with stale scones, cheap-tasting cheese and thick, dry cakes with no filling. It took a long time just to get a teaspoon. I’d been before in December and it was great, so this visit was a real letdown.

We stayed here right after getting married and the welcome from staff felt genuinely warm at first. On the last day, whoever did our turndown service took my watch and moved my side bag behind cushions near the door, and I only found the bag after searching the whole room. When I reported it, management just said they’d done an internal check and cleared their own staff, no real resolution offered. The watch had sentimental value to me, and I want anyone booking here to know the risk and take precautions.

The hotel sits directly opposite St George’s Cathedral with real views of Table Mountain, and the building itself has a lot of character. Breakfast was excellent and the Indian restaurant was strong on both food and service. Tareeq helped us through a car issue with real energy and problem-solving, and Jade guided our Table Mountain timing and handled hard-to-get restaurant reservations without the usual deposits or online hassle. We also enjoyed chatting in French with the Congolese doormen, especially Jean-Pierre, who added a lot of warmth to the stay.
Taj Cape Town occupies a building directly opposite Company Gardens and St George’s Cathedral in the city center, within walking distance of the Bo-Kaap district and the City Sightseeing bus pickup point. Rooms on higher floors, including the 9th and 17th, look out over Table Mountain, Lion’s Head and Signal Hill. The property operates as part of the Taj Hotels group and includes a Taj Club level with a separate lounge and evening snacks.
On property, guests eat at Bombay Brasserie, the hotel’s Indian fine-dining restaurant, and Mint, an all-day dining venue; there is also a bar and a high tea service.
