The Verdict
Soneva Jani delivers one of the Maldives' most spectacular experiences — massive overwater villas with private waterslides, lush eco-luxury, and service that genuinely anticipates your needs. The property excels at creating magical moments (surprise honeymoon cakes, butlers who arrive in five minutes) while maintaining its environmental ethos without compromising indulgence. However, families dominate the scene, making it less ideal for romantic escapes, and the dining, while good, doesn't match the excellence of the accommodations. The sheer scale requires constant buggy transport, but that expansiveness also creates unparalleled privacy once you're in your villa.

What People Say
Don't pay extra for the slide — every room has one anyway, despite what the booking suggests.
I almost fell for paying $600 extra for the slide, only to discover upon arrival from our butler that all villas include them. It seems to be the resort's way to get people to pay premium rates unnecessarily.
I could have easily stayed twice as long — never got anywhere close to being bored with 11 days there.
The gym was good, water activities were fun, and just walking around the island was enjoyable. I didn't even finish a book during my stay. The Seabob was particularly fun among the paid activities, and I still had plenty left to do like tennis and paddle.
I found the food and service to be a bit better at Fushi, but Jani has its own magic with those incredible water villas.
Jani felt more fancy and see-or-be-seen compared to Fushi's relaxed vibe, almost like two different resorts with the north and south areas. The water villas are amazing, but I prefer beach villas for that feet-in-sand reset feeling. The island is windier being on the atoll's edge, which made some nights in the water villa uncomfortable.
I can fully agree — this was probably my nicest holiday ever, though the pricing for experiences is pretty obscene.
We paid $600 extra per night for the slide villa, which was totally not worth it since all villas have slides now. The villas are absolutely massive, so there's no need to upgrade. After staying here, it's very hard to go to other hotels and not be disappointed — they've set the bar incredibly high.
This place truly feels like paradise — our room gentleman was exceptional, arriving within five minutes whenever we contacted him.
We visited for our honeymoon and they surprised us with a cake and lovely message on the bed. The property is very large so buggies are necessary, but that just emphasizes how expansive and private everything feels. The honeymoon touches were thoughtful and genuine, making our stay truly special.
How we score
The 5 signals above are a handpicked editorial selection from 37 signals we gathered across dedicated luxury communities, guest reviews, and editorial publications. Every signal we gathered — not just the ones shown — feeds into the Fat Score and verdict above.
Credibility-weighted
Detailed trip reports from luxury communities and major editorial reviews carry the most weight. Brief ratings add context, not conviction.
Recency-adjusted
Recent experiences matter more. Renovations, management changes, and staff turnover all surface in fresh signals.
Consensus-driven
When independent sources agree on a strength or weakness, that signal gets amplified. One bad night doesn't tank a score.
Refreshed quarterly
Scores are re-gathered and re-calculated from scratch each quarter. Last updated Q2 2026.
