How they score

Out of 20. The bars start at 10, so half a point still shows.

Overall Level

Overall: Rosewood Villa Magna 16 out of 20, Soneva Jani 16 out of 20.

Service +2.5 Why

Service: Rosewood Villa Magna 15 out of 20, Soneva Jani 17.5 out of 20.

Rosewood Villa Magna: Reports split hard: doormen and named staff like Claudia, Rubén and Laura get real praise, but multiple guests describe billing disputes and complaints met with stonewalling.

Soneva Jani: Butlers and Barefoot Guardians get named constantly for going out of their way, though a few guests found one butler split across two villas.

Rooms & Design +1.5 Why

Rooms & Design: Rosewood Villa Magna 16.5 out of 20, Soneva Jani 18 out of 20.

Rosewood Villa Magna: Guests love the artwork and the renovated rooms, though one longtime Rosewood stayer found the lighting flat and the common areas short on any real lobby.

Soneva Jani: The One Bedroom Water Retreat’s slide, retractable roof and glass floors draw real enthusiasm, but several 2025-26 stays flagged mould, dead lights and worn decking.

Location +3.5 Why

Location: Rosewood Villa Magna 18.5 out of 20, Soneva Jani 15 out of 20.

Rosewood Villa Magna: Sits right in Salamanca off Serrano, walkable to the best shops and restaurants in Madrid and repeatedly named the property’s clearest win.

Soneva Jani: The 5.6km lagoon delivers the postcard sunset shots people book for, but seagrass, no house reef and construction noise from renovations pull this down.

Dining Level Why

Dining: Rosewood Villa Magna 16 out of 20, Soneva Jani 16 out of 20.

Rosewood Villa Magna: The calamari and fava beans and the buffet breakfast draw real fans, but the winter chalet raclette (three slices of cheese, no wooden spatula) draws real anger.

Soneva Jani: Guests single out specific chefs and off-menu cooking as highlights, though a few call the buffet repetitive and dinner separately priced sharply.

Wellness +0.5 Why

Wellness: Rosewood Villa Magna 15.5 out of 20, Soneva Jani 15 out of 20.

Rosewood Villa Magna: The spa gets mentioned as a draw and a reason to return, but almost nobody who stayed actually had time to use it.

Soneva Jani: Soneva Soul yoga and spa treatments get warm mentions, but the fire that took out The Gathering removed one of the resort’s best gym spaces.

Strengths and trade-offs

Rosewood Villa Magna

Soneva Jani

Strengths of Rosewood Villa Magna

  • Unbeatable Salamanca location on the Castellana, walkable to top shopping and restaurants
  • Breakfast and bar scene consistently praised, even by critical reviewers
  • Standout individual staff moments (concierge rescues, doctor calls, birthday gestures)
  • Elegant, discreet, residential-feeling rooms with genuine comfort

Strengths of Soneva Jani

  • Water villas run 400+ square metres with private pools, retractable roofs and a signature deck-to-lagoon slide
  • Staff frequently praised by name for going beyond what was asked, including quick medical help and off-menu cooking
  • Wide restaurant variety from destination dining in the organic garden to a dedicated crab shack
  • Large kids’ club with its own pool, pirate ship and zip line makes it genuinely strong for multi-generational trips
  • Sunset dolphin cruises consistently called a standout excursion

Trade-offs of Rosewood Villa Magna

  • Inconsistent execution on fundamentals — coffee grounds, undercooked food, hot water outages
  • Billing and complaint-resolution process described as slow and combative
  • No pool, and the property functions more like a restaurant-and-bar collection than a full-service five-star hotel
  • Service can feel procedural rather than intuitive, falling short of Rosewood’s flagship properties

Trade-offs of Soneva Jani

  • No house reef means snorkelling requires a boat trip, and the lagoon has notable seagrass
  • Several 2025-26 stays reported maintenance issues: mould, non-functioning lights, worn decking and weak AC
  • Butler service is sometimes shared across two villas despite marketing suggesting a private one
  • Fire damage to The Gathering removed a major dining and gym space, and North Jetty renovation is visible from parts of the island

The verdicts

Rosewood Villa Magna

The case here is the address: deep in Salamanca on the Castellana, footsteps from the best shopping and restaurants in Madrid, and several travellers rank it above the Four Seasons and level with the Mandarin Oriental Ritz on that point alone. Breakfast and the bar back it up: the calamari and fava beans get named specifically, and even guests who left frustrated by other things still bring up the buffet and the Tarde.O crowd.

Set against that: a concierge named Pablo tracked down a lost passport through overnight contacts at El Corte Inglés before a 6am flight, and another stay saw a doctor arranged within the hour for a guest with a respiratory infection. Those moments are real, but so are the ordinary slip-ups: coffee arriving with grounds still in it, one stay losing hot water two nights out of three, pancakes sent back undercooked twice at the same table. Billing is the sharper problem. Several 2026 guests describe incorrect charges that took days of emails and late-night calls to sort out; one froze their card rather than keep arguing. There's no pool, and more than one traveller has described the place as feeling like a restaurant-and-bar collection with rooms attached rather than a full five-star hotel. Service is competent and occasionally warm, but it does what's asked rather than anticipating it, which is a fair gap from what Rosewood delivers at its best addresses.

Book it for the address, the breakfast, and the bar scene, and go in with your eyes open: check the folio daily, and don't expect the room or the spa to be the memory you take home. Travellers wanting a full-service five-star with a pool and steadier polish tend to land at the Four Seasons down the road, but nobody's saying it has this address.

Soneva Jani

A one-bedroom water retreat here runs well over $3,000 a night before you touch the extras, and what arrives for it is genuinely one of the largest villas in the Maldives: 400-plus square metres, a private pool, a retractable roof over the bed that opens straight to the stars, and a slide off the deck into the lagoon that every kid (and most adults) treats as the main event. The staff are the reason people rebook: guests describe a Barefoot Guardian who sent a doctor over for a sunburn within minutes, and a butler who knew the island's history well enough to answer any question without being asked twice. The food gets called out by name, dish by dish, from an in-villa omakase lunch to a chef who quietly restocked a table with dishes that weren't on the buffet at all.

None of that erases what a run of 2025-26 stays actually found on arrival: mould in fittings, weathered decking, lights that didn't work, and an AC that struggled on hot nights. One family paid roughly $40,000 for six nights and left after two, citing a limited menu and a distant, seagrass-choked lagoon; a fire took out The Gathering, the wooden building that held most of the restaurants and the best gym, and renovation work has left construction visible from parts of the island. The lagoon itself is the trade worth knowing about going in: spectacular to look at, weak for snorkelling, since there's no house reef and you'll need a boat to find real coral. Half-board runs close to $250 a person a day, which only pencils out if you'd otherwise be paying $600 for dinner alone.

This is a house for families and repeat guests who want space, privacy and a genuinely warm team, not a honeymoon pick if quiet and reef access matter more than square footage. Book it for the villa and the people who run it, and go in expecting the odd rough edge on the building itself.
