Strengths & trade-offs

One&Only Lord Howe Island

Strengths

  • Rooms and dining deck face Mt Gower and Mt Lidgbird with no other buildings in view
  • Staff greet guests by first name and go well beyond standard turndown service
  • Nightly-changing dinner menus with included wine pairings
  • Included picnic lunches delivered to any beach on the island
  • E-bikes, snorkel gear and a golf cart included for exploring

Trade-offs

  • Nine rooms means one off night in the kitchen is more noticeable than at a larger resort
  • Plunge pool is small and there's little else in the way of wellness facilities
  • E-bike fleet can run short during busy periods

One&Only Reethi Rah

Strengths

  • Staff repeatedly singled out by name for going beyond their role, from butlers to dive instructors to kids' club leaders
  • 109-acre island with around a dozen beaches gives real space and privacy between villas
  • Strong family offering with an engaged kids' club and marine biology sessions
  • Spa rated among the best some guests have visited, with a Bastien Gonzalez pedicure on offer
  • Multiple distinct restaurants including a well-regarded Japanese teppanyaki room

Trade-offs

  • No house reef, so snorkelling requires a boat trip rather than stepping off the beach
  • Watersports and dining credits carry unexpected charges and restrictions guests weren't warned about upfront
  • One guest reported a serious injury from a resort service vehicle and described a slow, inadequate response from the resort

Service

Managers Bridie and Ryan get named repeatedly, staff greet guests by first name, and one couple had their room turned twice a day.

Design

Nine rooms and pavilion-style suites like the 125-square-metre Lidgbird Pavilion, boutique in scale rather than grand.

17

Beach Villas read as spacious and quietly updated, but one water villa bathroom had a persistent odor and the over-water decks can be small and shaded.

Location

Rooms face Mt Gower and Mt Lidgbird with no other building in the sightline, and guests keep comparing the setting to Bora Bora.

17

The island itself sprawls across 109 acres and a dozen beaches, with a boat transfer from Malé that guests describe as short and easy rather than a slog.

Wellness

One small plunge pool, among only two or three on the whole island, plus e-bikes, snorkel gear and a golf cart for getting around.

17.5

The spa's hot stone massage and Bastien Gonzalez pedicures get singled out as highlights worth booking ahead of everything else on the island.

The Verdicts

One&Only Lord Howe Island

Capella Lodge sits on a bluff with Mt Gower and Mt Lidgbird filling the view and nothing else in the frame: no other building on the island sits south of it, so the outlook from the dining deck and most rooms is just mountain, ocean and sky. That alone justifies the trip for people who've been chasing this exact kind of view. Rates include breakfast, dinner, canapes and a picnic lunch delivered to whichever beach you pick, and the nightly-changing dinner menu with wine pairings is the thing repeat guests mention booking a return trip around.

The service is the strongest thread running through nearly every stay: managers Bridie and Ryan get credited by name for running a team that greets guests by first name and, in at least one case, turned a room twice a day unasked. That's not universal. One couple who'd just done seven nights at Milky Way found the Capella dinner service and food underwhelming for the price, a useful reminder that this is a nine-room lodge, not a resort, so an off night in the kitchen or a quiet service block is more noticeable than it would be somewhere bigger. The pool is small (one of only two or three on all of Lord Howe Island) and the e-bike fleet runs short at busy times.

Book it for the mountains-into-ocean view from the Lidgbird Pavilion and the included dinners, not for a spa or a big pool scene, and go in knowing a nine-room property has good nights and occasional flat ones. For a couple wanting one very good week on an island with no phone reception and barely any other accommodation worth naming, nothing else on Lord Howe comes close.

One&Only Reethi Rah

One&Only Reethi Rah is 109 acres and a dozen beaches, and the thing that actually justifies the fare is the staff, not the real estate. Guests write in with names, not adjectives: a butler called Yiting who ran a private dinner and checked in daily, a host named Hameed who talked a family through a middle-of-the-night health scare, a dive instructor named Moe who slowed down to point out things underwater most people would miss. That's the pattern across nearly every review here, from first-timers to a family that first came eighteen years ago and found the place had gotten better, not worse, with kids in tow this time.

The building itself is good rather than remarkable: Beach Villas are spacious and recently refreshed, the island is genuinely green and walkable by bike, and the main pool and beach club are well kept. The reef is the real gap against the Baa Atoll resorts people compare it to: there's no house reef here, so snorkelling means a boat ride, and one repeat guest found the villas plain for the money, with a small, shaded pool deck. Billing needs watching too: one guest was told watersports were included and got a $730 charge for a 40-minute foilboard session, and daily dining credit can't be put toward room service. None of that is dealbreaker territory, but it's worth knowing before you sign anything at check-in.

The service is the reason to book this over a prettier reef island, and the family-friendly kids' club (marine biology sessions, a Halloween trick-or-treat kids still talk about) makes it a genuine option with children, not just honeymooners. Go for a week if you want variety in restaurants and activities; go somewhere in the Baa Atoll instead if snorkelling off your own villa is non-negotiable.

Still torn between One&Only Lord Howe Island and One&Only Reethi Rah?

We're Sofie and Nicolas, the two of us behind Fat Voyage — and we've stayed in hotels like these ourselves. Tell us what the trip is and we'll tell you which one we'd book, and why. We're not a booking service, but a few times a year we plan one properly for someone; if that's what you're after, say so.

You'll be dealing with the two of us the whole way through, which is why we only take on a handful of trips at a time — if we're full, we'll say so. We reply by email, usually within one working day. The hotel pays us, not you: your rate is the same as booking direct, and the perks come on top.
