Cheval Blanc Paris is LVMH's argument that a 72-room hotel on the Seine doesn't need a single gilt mirror to compete with the Ritz or Le Meurice, and most guests who stay come away agreeing. Peter Marino's rooms run light, marble-heavy and contemporary rather than Haussmann-ornate, and the gifting culture is the thing people actually remember: nightly turndown surprises, a metal bookmark left in a book overnight, Dior bath scents from François Demachy that keep arriving all week rather than just at check-in. Plénitude's three stars and the rooftop bar's river views are the other reasons this costs what it costs, and both hold up across recent reports.

The catch, raised often enough to take seriously, is noise: guests on multiple floors through 2025 and into this year describe furniture being moved on the rooftop past 2am and thin enough insulation that closed windows don't fully solve it. The all-glass bathrooms work fine for couples and awkwardly for friends sharing a suite. And the aesthetic itself is genuinely divisive rather than universally loved, some travelers find it a relief from the stuffier grandeur of the Ritz or George V; others say the lobby reads more South Beach condo than Paris and never fully shakes an international, could-be-anywhere feeling. Service is strong on balance, but a badly handled lost-property case and occasional slow room-service follow-through surface enough in recent reviews to note plainly rather than wave away.

Book it for the most materials-obsessed hotel in the city right now, the Plénitude table, and a version of Paris hospitality built on gifts rather than gilding. A light sleeper on a high floor near the roof should ask for a lower one first.

Breakfast runs about €35, suites start well into four figures, and almost nobody who's stayed here talks about the building first. They talk about being taken care of: a concierge team that spent 48 hours sourcing a bride's lost luggage before Air France had even confirmed it landed, a chef sending up a corrected avocado with a personal apology after one guest's offhand complaint, staff who seem to clock a request before it's made. That level of anticipation is the reason people come back for a fourth or fifth stay. Gabriel, the three-Michelin-starred restaurant downstairs, gets singled out even by travellers who've done Six Senses and Aman elsewhere, and the library and cigar room give the place a private-house feel most Paris Palace hotels don't bother attempting.

The building itself splits opinion more than the service does. It's a converted townhouse of around 40 rooms with Jacques Garcia interiors, closer to an exceptional Haussmann apartment than a grand architectural statement, and at least one guest comparing it to a presidential suite elsewhere found it underwhelming for the money. More seriously: the service failures that do surface are jarring precisely because the baseline is so high. A hostess denied a table and lied about a private event in an incident one guest read as discriminatory, a four-night stay produced zero restaurant reservations from the concierge, and a pre-booked airport transfer never showed. These read as isolated lapses rather than the house norm, but at this price the margin for error is basically zero.

Book it for the intimacy and the food, not for a grand architectural statement: the cigar room, the library fireplace, and Gabriel make the case on their own. If you want more physical scale for Palace money, the George V is worth cross-shopping. If you want Paris's most personal version of being looked after, this is it.
