Strengths and trade-offs

Capella Ubud

Cheval Blanc Randheli

Strengths of Capella Ubud

  • Staff repeatedly remember names, schedules and preferences across entire stays, not just at check-in
  • Bill Bensley’s tented design is genuinely unlike anywhere else in Bali, down to individually themed rooms
  • Api Jiwa restaurant and the cultural excursions (Wos River Temple ritual, village art school) get named as trip highlights
  • Private plunge pools and real seclusion between tents despite the shared valley setting

Strengths of Cheval Blanc Randheli

  • Identical, oversized villa layout across every category, with a signature 45-foot pool
  • A lagoon in front of the Lagoon Villas that longtime Maldives travelers single out as unusually vivid
  • A spa island reached by boat with a near-private over-water pool
  • Breakfast and the pastry program are consistently the standout meal of the day
  • Villas and grounds are private enough that guests rarely encounter other visitors outside meals

Trade-offs of Capella Ubud

  • Roughly 120 steps between many tents and reception, a real problem if a phone or request system fails
  • Open-plan bathrooms and canvas-wall tents suit the concept, not conventional comfort seekers
  • Room readiness and basic maintenance (power outlets, damp furniture) have slipped on at least one recent stay
  • Bar and some restaurant dishes have been flagged as less refined than the service around them

Trade-offs of Cheval Blanc Randheli

  • Butler quality varies noticeably; anticipatory service for some, reactive and inconsistent for others
  • A cluster of hygiene and management complaints followed a general manager transition
  • Weak house reef means snorkeling from the villa isn’t realistic
  • A few specific dishes, notably sushi at Diptyque, fell short of the rest of the food

The verdicts

Capella Ubud

Capella Ubud gets talked about for two things: Bill Bensley's tented design and staff who seem to know your schedule by day two. Vidi the duty manager keeps coming up as the one who makes people feel tracked rather than processed, greeting returning guests in their own language and steering them through the property like he's done it a hundred times. The 23 tents are individually themed, copper bathtubs and outdoor showers and all, and Api Jiwa is the meal people build a night around, alongside excursions like the Wos River Temple ritual that read as genuine rather than staged.

The concept is also what you're actually signing up for, and it splits people. These are canvas-walled tents with open-plan bathrooms and no glass, linked by roughly 120 steps up and down a jungle valley: extraordinary to look at, harder to live in for a week if you want a normal room and a phone that works. One 2026 stay found dead power outlets, a soaked deck cushion, and a broken room phone with no way to reach reception short of climbing those steps in the rain. When the theatrical design meets an off day, there's no easy backup, and that's the real risk here, not the concept itself. The bar and a few restaurant dishes have also been flagged as a notch below the service around them, which says more about how good the staff are than how bad the kitchen is.

Book it for an experience, not a hotel room. Nobody who loves this place is comparing it to a conventional five-star, they're comparing it to nowhere else in Bali. If a proper bed-and-bath layout matters more to you than atmosphere, that's a fair reason to look elsewhere; people who've made that trade tend to land at Amandari instead. For everyone else, it's the tents, the temple ritual, and staff who remember your birthday without being told twice.

Cheval Blanc Randheli

A week here runs somewhere around $4,000 a night once you're in the top villas, and what you get for it is genuinely hard to find elsewhere in the Maldives: identical, enormous villa layouts whether you're on the water or on the island, a 45-foot pool that heats up in the sun, and a lagoon in front of the Lagoon Villas that people who've done a dozen Maldives trips still describe as unlike any water they've seen. The Jean-Michel Gathy design carries the whole property, from the restaurants to the spa, which sits on its own island reached by a short boat ride and includes a pool big enough that you'll likely have it to yourself with a waiter bringing drinks.

The butlers can make or break the week, and that's the real trade-off worth knowing before you book. One couple's stay turned on Mr. G tracking down dolphins and surprising them with snacks and treats; another couple's most-referenced complaint was a butler who felt reactive rather than anticipatory, plus a few requests (reserved goggles, an itinerary update) that never made it through from the pre-trip planning team. A run of hygiene complaints followed a general manager change too: hair in food, a live worm in a salad, reckless buggy driving, reported by more than one long-time guest who called the resort their second home before that stretch. It hasn't shown up everywhere, but it's real, and it tracks with the management turnover other guests flagged around the same period. The house reef is also weak, so don't come expecting to snorkel straight off your villa; the better marine life is a short boat ride away.

Book it for the villas and the spa island, and go in expecting the food to be the strongest and most consistent part of your week, especially breakfast and the pastry counter — a few guests found the sushi at Diptyque didn't match the rest of the menu, which is worth knowing rather than worth avoiding the resort over. Couples and families both seem to do well here; the kids' club gets specific praise, and the villas are private enough that other guests barely register. For the room alone, and for a lagoon that keeps coming up as the thing nobody expected, this is worth the seaplane transfer.
