No one else in Torres del Paine gives you a private guide and private vehicle per villa. Stay at Explora or Tierra and you're on a shared group itinerary; at Awasi, guests describe their guide rerouting the whole day around wind and light, sketching geology lessons on a whiteboard over lunch, or turning up with borrowed fishing gear because someone mentioned liking to fish. With only 14 to 15 villas and cedar-and-stone architecture that sits into the hillside instead of announcing itself, the guiding is the reason to pick this over the bigger lodges nearby — and the staff names recur constantly across years of reviews, which says as much about the management as the individuals.

There was a real stretch through 2024 and into early 2025 when the guiding and the management behind it slipped badly enough that Awasi brought in a new CEO and, for the first time, a permanent year-round GM rather than a seasonal one. Stays from spring 2025 onward read close to flawless again, though a couple of guests as recently as May 2026 still describe getting stuck with a weak guide before switching, so the fix isn't unanimous, even if it's clearly held for most people. The hot tub situation is a genuine coin flip: some guests use theirs nightly regardless of wind, even in the newer piped-heat villas, while others lose most of a four-night stay to it. Food is good, occasionally excellent (guanaco tartare, an all-Chilean list), but defaults to heavy and simple unless you specifically ask for off-menu.

Book it for the guiding and the privacy, not for a guaranteed soak or a spa afternoon. Budget for real drive time to the trailheads, sometimes over an hour each way, and expect the heli and seaplane add-ons to be the only real extras on an otherwise all-inclusive bill.

Capella Ubud gets talked about for two things: Bill Bensley's tented design and staff who seem to know your schedule by day two. Vidi the duty manager keeps coming up as the one who makes people feel tracked rather than processed, greeting returning guests in their own language and steering them through the property like he's done it a hundred times. The 23 tents are individually themed, copper bathtubs and outdoor showers and all, and Api Jiwa is the meal people build a night around, alongside excursions like the Wos River Temple ritual that read as genuine rather than staged.

The concept is also what you're actually signing up for, and it splits people. These are canvas-walled tents with open-plan bathrooms and no glass, linked by roughly 120 steps up and down a jungle valley: extraordinary to look at, harder to live in for a week if you want a normal room and a phone that works. One 2026 stay found dead power outlets, a soaked deck cushion, and a broken room phone with no way to reach reception short of climbing those steps in the rain. When the theatrical design meets an off day, there's no easy backup, and that's the real risk here, not the concept itself. The bar and a few restaurant dishes have also been flagged as a notch below the service around them, which says more about how good the staff are than how bad the kitchen is.

Book it for an experience, not a hotel room. Nobody who loves this place is comparing it to a conventional five-star, they're comparing it to nowhere else in Bali. If a proper bed-and-bath layout matters more to you than atmosphere, that's a fair reason to look elsewhere; people who've made that trade tend to land at Amandari instead. For everyone else, it's the tents, the temple ritual, and staff who remember your birthday without being told twice.
