The honest review of Capella Lodge

Community score pending

The fat travel community hasn’t weighed in yet. When they do, it gets its score.

The verdict

Nine rooms sit on a bluff on Lord Howe Island with nothing between you and Mt Gower and Mt Lidgbird, and almost nobody who stays here leaves without saying the view alone would have been worth the trip. The island only allows a few hundred visitors at a time, so Capella already has a kind of built-in quiet. What makes it more than a nice view is the way it’s run: when one couple got stranded by cancelled flights and bad weather, the lodge managers sorted another night and found them seats on the next available flight out, and that kind of problem-solving shows up constantly in how people describe their stay here. Breakfast, dinner, evening canapes and cocktails are all included, and the kitchen changes the dinner menu nightly rather than running a fixed rotation.

The trade-offs are narrow but real. One guest who’d just come off seven nights at a nearby luxury lodge found Capella’s dinner service a letdown by comparison and felt the package didn’t justify the cost that week, so the kitchen isn’t bulletproof every night. The pool is small (there are only a couple on the whole island, so context helps), and the e-bike fleet runs short when the lodge is full. The rooms themselves are plain good rather than showstopping next to the setting around them: comfortable, well-finished, but it’s the mountains and the staff doing the heavy lifting, not the architecture.

Book it for the Lidgbird Pavilion if you can get it, for a kitchen that doesn’t repeat itself, and for a team that treats a cancelled flight as their problem to fix rather than yours. This is a place for people who want the island to be the whole trip, not a lodge you duck out of for nightlife, because there isn’t any, and that’s the point.

Strengths

  • Staff and managers solve real problems, including rebooking guests stranded by cancelled flights
  • Unobstructed views of Mt Gower and Mt Lidgbird with no other buildings in the sightline
  • Nightly changing dinner menu rather than a fixed rotation
  • Lidgbird Pavilion suite offers 125 square meters with its own hot tub and large deck
  • Included e-bikes, snorkel gear and a golf cart make it easy to explore the island

Trade-offs

  • One guest found a single dinner service underwhelming given the price paid
  • E-bike fleet can run short when the lodge is at capacity
  • Pool and deck area are small, even if that’s typical for the island

Strong endorsement

Every detail of our stay felt taken care of, down to a coffee that was better than what we get at home.

Luca And Susan May 2024

The service matched the quality of the room throughout, and small details clearly hadn’t been overlooked. A nice surprise given how remote the island is.

We got stranded on the island by bad weather and cancelled flights, and the lodge managers turned a nightmare into a non-event.

Amy Willett Oct 2026

They sorted us another night without any fuss and somehow got us on the last-minute flight out the next day. The whole hospitality team made us feel like friends rather than guests the entire stay. And the food was a genuine highlight, every single meal felt thought through rather than just plated.

“nothing was ever too much trouble” in their words
  • Managers solved a flight cancellation without stress
  • Food described as a highlight of the trip

My husband and I stayed in a maisonette room with a hot tub after a hard day’s hike, and it was exactly the reset we needed.

SO_SYD_81 May 2026

The lodge only has nine rooms, and the views over the mountains and sea make it feel much bigger than it is. Dinner, breakfast, canapes and cocktails were all included and the food was excellent across the board. Everyone on staff was warm and genuinely helpful, we’re already thinking about going back.

“It’s a magical place.” in their words
  • Hot tub room was ideal after hiking
  • Food consistently strong across meals

The entire team, from the kitchen to housekeeping to maintenance, clearly enjoys working together, and it shows in how we were treated.

David Wallace May 2026

Managers Bridie and Ryan led a group of people who all seemed genuinely happy to be there. We left with memories of Lord Howe Island we’ll keep for a long time. It felt less like a transaction and more like being looked after by people who cared.

  • Staff culture feels genuine, not performative

From airport pickup to drop-off, the service never let up, and the food had so much variety nobody in our group was left wanting.

PLofNorthEpping Mar 2026

Managers Bridie and Ryan run a tight operation, welcome drinks, evening canapes over sunset, dinner and breakfast all delivered without a miss. They even packed us a full picnic lunch, tablecloth and all, that got delivered to and picked up from the beach we chose. Our room had ocean views with the mountains looking down on us, a rain shower, hot tub and a stocked fridge included. Staff called us by first name the whole stay, a small touch that stuck with us.

“Nothing less than superb.” in their words
  • Beach picnic service with full setup
  • Staff remembered guests by first name

Mixed read

We came here as a treat after a fantastic week elsewhere on the island and came away a bit let down by comparison.

Sue Nov 2025

The staff were lovely and the deck views were exactly what we expected, and housekeeping was spotless. But dinner one night really missed the mark, not what I’d expect given what we paid. The overall package didn’t feel like it matched the rate for that stay.

  • Exceptional housekeeping
  • Friendly staff and strong cocktails
  • Dinner service disappointing on one night
  • Felt pricey relative to what was included

We celebrated our 30th wedding anniversary with dinner here and it could not have gone better.

OZOZOZ Oct 2025

The views alone made the evening memorable, and the four-course meal was some of the best we’ve had. Everything about how the place runs felt deliberate, nothing was left to chance. I’d recommend it without hesitation for a special occasion.

“hits all the right notes” in their words
  • Exceptional setting for special occasions
  • High-caliber multi-course dinner

The welcome here felt like a lesson in how arrivals should be done, and everything that followed matched it.

Chris Diffley Sep 2025

The food was sublime, the rooms were brilliant, and the view might be the best I’ve seen anywhere. What really stuck with me was the staff though, they were the reason the whole stay felt special. I loved every minute on the island.

“a masterclass in how it should be done” in their words
  • Memorable arrival experience
  • View ranks among the best guests have seen

We stayed four nights in the Lidgbird Pavilion and the setting alone made the trip worth it.

KI-NRT Jun 2025

Flying in reminded us of Bora Bora or northern Kauai, lush and green with turquoise water rather than flat and dry. Walking into reception, we realized how deliberately the property was positioned, facing the twin peaks with not a single building breaking the view. Our suite was about 125 square meters with a living room and a large deck looking straight at the mountains. It wasn’t a flawless stay but the location alone makes it one of one.

  • Lidgbird Pavilion offers space and unobstructed mountain views
  • Property positioned with no buildings interrupting the view
  • A few minor issues during the stay

We spent eight nights in a Capella Suite and never got tired of the daily rhythm of breakfast, canapes and dinner.

Stewart_Julie Jun 2025

Every dinner menu was different, and the wine kept up with it. We used the included e-bikes most days to get around the island quickly, which doubled as our exercise. The staff went well beyond what we expected the entire stay.

  • Nightly changing dinner menu over eight nights
  • Included e-bikes made exploring easy

Our room was private and comfortable, and the hot tub was perfect once the evening cooled off.

vicnot Mar 2025

The food was genuinely excellent, and I liked chatting with staff and the other international guests around the property. The pool and deck are on the small side, but there are only a couple of pools on the whole island so it still felt special to swim there. The borrowed snorkel gear, bikes and golf cart were all good quality, though I wished there were more e-bikes available.

  • Private room with hot tub
  • Quality equipment for exploring the island
  • Small pool and deck area
  • Limited number of e-bikes

The staff were a step ahead of me at every turn, which is the kind of attentiveness I didn’t expect anywhere, let alone here.

Elizabeth Fisher Mar 2025

I never had to lift a finger the whole stay, and they still found a way to surprise me with a birthday cake and a small gift. Every meal felt genuinely crafted rather than routine, with new ideas showing up daily. Housekeeping came through twice a day and staff helped me plan activities each morning with real enthusiasm.

“one step ahead of me at every turn” in their words
  • Anticipatory service down to small personal gestures
  • Twice-daily housekeeping

Our beds and linens were comfortable, and the balcony had panoramic views stretching from the mountains down to the ocean. Every meal was well presented, with wine pairings offered alongside. Staff were professional and friendly but never intrusive, no matter their role.

A full week here left us grateful we’d chosen to spend our island time at this lodge rather than anywhere else.

The location was perfect and the cuisine genuinely top tier, with the chefs building a different, imaginative menu each night rather than repeating themselves. The team around the managers clearly take pride in the place. It felt like fine dining in the middle of nowhere, in the best way.

  • Nightly changing, imaginative dinner menus
  • Strong sense of team pride among staff

About Capella Lodge

Capella Lodge sits on a bluff on Lord Howe Island, Australia, facing the peaks of Mt Gower and Mt Lidgbird. The property is a small, boutique-style lodge with rooms and suites that include options such as maisonette rooms and the Lidgbird Pavilion, many with private decks or hot tubs and views over the mountains and the sea. Guest accounts describe airport pick-up and drop-off as part of the arrival experience.

On property, dining includes daily breakfast, evening canapés and cocktails, and multi-course dinners with wine pairings, all with menus that vary day to day. There is a swimming pool and deck area used for lounging, one of only a small number of pools on the island. Guests can borrow snorkel gear, bikes and a golf cart, and e-bikes are available for reaching sights around Lord Howe Island, including its beaches.

What fat travellers ask

Is Capella Lodge worth it?

For most people who stay, yes: the setting facing Mt Gower and Mt Lidgbird, the included dinners and canapes, and a staff that handles real problems (one couple got rebooked after a flight cancellation) add up to more than the room count suggests. A few guests have felt a given dinner or the overall package didn’t match the price, so it isn’t flawless every night.

What room should I book at Capella Lodge?

The Lidgbird Pavilion comes up repeatedly as the one to request, with roughly 125 square meters, a separate living room, a large deck and a private hot tub facing the mountains. Other rooms are well-finished but smaller, so the view and space scale up with the category.

What’s included in a Capella Lodge stay?

Breakfast and dinner are included, along with evening canapes and cocktails, and the dinner menu changes nightly rather than repeating. E-bikes, snorkeling gear and a golf cart are also available to guests for exploring the island.

Who is Capella Lodge best for?

People who want the island itself, hiking Mt Gower, snorkeling, cycling, and quiet, to be the entire trip. It isn’t a nightlife or big-resort stay; there’s no mobile reception on the island and the pace is set by the mountains and the tide.

How do I book Capella Lodge?

Directly with the hotel. The Reserve button on this page takes you there, and the reservation is made with the hotel, in your name.

What is the smartest way to book Capella Lodge?

Directly with the hotel is the simplest: the reservation is then the hotel’s own, so a change of dates or a request for a particular room goes straight to the people who run it.

Can I get a free room upgrade at Capella Lodge?

Not something anyone can promise: it depends on what’s still unsold the day you arrive. Telling the hotel in advance that you’re celebrating something is worth doing.
