The ground-floor restaurant eats into what should be an intimate lobby, afternoon tea service can be scattered with five different servers touching one table, and the Brooklands rooftop bar has drawn complaints about stingy cocktails for the price. Staff are named constantly and warmly by guests, but the same reports include a shockingly hostile encounter with a cyclist in the courtyard and a transfer car that failed to show at 4am before a Heathrow flight. None of this is normal for what guests are paying, but none of it is the norm either: most stays described here ran smoothly from arrival to checkout.
Book it for the room and the bathroom, not for a flawless front door every time. A surprise upgrade to a suite for a 30th anniversary left one couple in tears at check-in, handled by the hotel manager personally. The trouble is getting in the door.
