The Chancery took the old US Embassy on Grosvenor Square, a brutalist Portland stone block Mayfair had learned to look past, and turned it into the most architecturally confident hotel London has opened in years. Joseph Dirand's suites run genuinely residential, walnut and brass and rare green marble baths, with even the entry Junior Suites hitting 570+ sq ft. The 25m pool and Asaya spa below ground are a real point of difference in a city where most luxury hotels can't spare the basement for it, and the Ginza-style omakase plus the Eagle Bar (that salvaged B-52 eagle now sitting over two new penthouse floors) are destination-worthy on their own, not add-ons.
The service is uneven, and it's been uneven since the September 2025 opening, not just in the first nervous weeks. One guest got a butler who gave an unforgettable private tour and a manager who remembered a child's name; another, a week later, got an AC unit switching itself on at 3am, an afternoon tea where the tea itself never arrived, or a concierge quoting £1,200 for a tour bookable elsewhere for £250. Several stays land on the same description without prompting each other: reactive rather than anticipatory, fixed after the fact rather than caught before it happens. Nearly a year in, that's not opening jitters, it's still the pattern. Worth pricing in, not worth avoiding the hotel over.
Book it for the design, the suites, and the spa: nothing else in Mayfair offers this much space and wellness for the money. Go in knowing service is a dice roll, not a guarantee — if flawless, intuitive staff matters more to you than anything else, Claridge's or the Connaught still deliver that more reliably. For the building and the suite alone, this earns the trip.
Rosewood Schloss Fuschl
A 1461 hunting lodge on Lake Fuschl, redone as a Rosewood with the original stucco left exposed in the tower and Old Masters on the walls, this is one of the more beautiful buildings in the Alps to wake up in. The lake is the real amenity: swimmable, cold-plunge clear, with free paddleboards and a trail that circles the whole shoreline. Rooms run from around $550 a night at opening rates up toward $1,300+ for a suite in season, and the best of them (the tower rooms, the Franz Joseph suite with its own fireplace and two balconies) are worth the climb in price. The setting and the building are not in question.
Where the money gets harder to defend is the service, and it has been uneven since the 2024 opening. Guests still report a reservation getting waved off at a busy restaurant, a lakeside lounge shutting for the day over twenty minutes of rain, turndown skipped on arrival night, and room requests (a fan, fresh sheets, ice) taking 30-45 minutes to land. Against that: a front-desk manager personally moving a guest's luggage, flowers and champagne to a new room after a dog's surgery made stairs a problem, and a bar manager and concierge team who get thanked by name for cocktail classes and birthday surprises pulled off with real care. The spa and pool are smaller than what nearby Alpine competitors offer, so this isn't the property for someone who wants a serious wellness program over a lake view.
Book it for a lakeside room, the hiking, and a slower few days near Salzburg, not for the flawless five-star choreography the rate implies. Families with older kids who'll paddleboard and hike do well here; anyone chasing the polish of Rosewood's Munich or Vienna hotels should adjust expectations before they check in.
