Book it for the beach, the food, and a place built for lounging rather than anticipating your every move: families and dog owners in particular get looked after well here. The oceanfront and Beach House categories are worth stretching for over the garden bungalows. San Ysidro Ranch comes up often as the more intimate alternative nearby, though it isn't on the sand. For a beach trip out of LA, this is still the one to book.
